Vietnam And The Legacy Of Conrad, Jill Stacy Gabel Jan 1992

Vietnam And The Legacy Of Conrad, Jill Stacy Gabel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

A mixed-media study of Vietnam War literature begins in Africa with Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and travels into Vietnam with Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now and Michael Herr's Dispatches. Marlow, Willard, and Herr are first person narrators on voyages of self-discovery. Their journeys into Africa, Cambodia, and Vietnam lead the audience into an examination of themes pertinent to not only the works, but the twentieth century and, therefore, history. Through an examination of imperialism, the conflict of Western and non-Western values, the interplay of fantasy and reality, and the nature of moral confession, Heart of Darkness, Apocalypse Now, and …

Vision And Revision: The Perceptual Modes Of Henry James, Kevin Ray Allen Jan 1992

Vision And Revision: The Perceptual Modes Of Henry James, Kevin Ray Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

For Henry James, artistic vision is essentially revision. It is a process of transformation: of literal experience to "felt life," of pictorial presentation to dramatic representation, of the past to the present. This process is a central element of James's fiction. The "meaning" of stories such as "The Real Thing" and "The Middle Years" and novels such as The Ambassadors depends on a growth of vision. Their protagonists must be able to overcome the limits of their imaginations. They must be reflective, both intellectually and mimetically. In demanding a finer kind of artistic perception, James pointed the way for a …

Voices From The Distance: Radio Marti And The (Pen)Insular Construction Of Cuban Identity, Diana. Saco Jan 1992

Voices From The Distance: Radio Marti And The (Pen)Insular Construction Of Cuban Identity, Diana. Saco

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In May, 1985, the United States government inaugurated Radio Marti, a broadcast-to-Cuba project with the avowed intent of providing the Cuban people with objective news. In this study I argue that an important though tacit political aim of this project is the reconstruction of Cuban identity. I take a cultural-studies approach in my "situated interpretation" of Radio Marti transmissions, foregrounding the mutual, discursive constitution of meaning and self-understanding. Situating my own voice within the multiple discourses on Cubanness, I note how the transmissions construct the voice of the Cuban exile in Miami and evoke an image of a separated Cuban …

Vlsi Implementable Thinning Algorithm, Wei Zhang Jan 1992

Vlsi Implementable Thinning Algorithm, Wei Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Thinning is a very important step in a Character Recognition System. This thesis evolves a thinning algorithm that can be hardware implemented to improve the speed of the process. The software thinning algorithm features a simple set of rules that can be applied on both hexagonal and orthogonal character images. The hardware architecture features the SIMD structure, simple processing elements and near neighbor communications. The algorithm was simulated against the U.S. Postal Service Character Database. The architecture, evolved with consideration of both the software constraints and the physical layout limitations, was simulated using VHDL hardware description language. Subsequent to VLSI …

Vortex Street Wakes Downstream Of Truncated And Full Cylinders In A Rotating Fluid, Bram. Leader Jan 1992

Vortex Street Wakes Downstream Of Truncated And Full Cylinders In A Rotating Fluid, Bram. Leader

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

An experimental study has been conducted to examine the flow field about and the wake behind truncated cylindrical obstacles of varying height, which are towed through a fluid with a free surface in a rotating system. The results show the development of a vortex street-type wake downstream of the obstacle for retrograde (westward) flows, even for very small ratios of obstacle height to water layer depth. For short obstacles, a pronounced backward flowing jet is observed, which impinges on the Taylor column from downstream. Prograde (eastward) flows are found to have a meandering wake that extends farther than eight obstacle …

Workspace Evaluation And Kinematic Calibration Of Stewart Platform, Jian. Wang Jan 1992

Workspace Evaluation And Kinematic Calibration Of Stewart Platform, Jian. Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Parallel manipulators have their special characteristics in contrast to the traditional serial type of robots. Stewart platform is a typical six degree of freedom fully parallel robot manipulator. The goal of this research is to enhance the accuracy and the restricted workspace of the Stewart platform. The first part of the dissertation discusses the effect of three kinematic constraints: link length limitation, joint angle limitation and link interference, and kinematic parameters on the workspace of the platform. An algorithm considering the above constraints for the determination of the volume and the envelop of Stewart platform workspace is developed. The workspace …

Perceptions Of Teacher And Student Roles : Views Of Japanese Businessmen, John Walter Armbrust Jan 1992

Perceptions Of Teacher And Student Roles : Views Of Japanese Businessmen, John Walter Armbrust

Dissertations and Theses

Research provides a vast amount of information detailing the learning styles and preferences of learners and the influence of one's culture on that individual's perceptions of the world. Little of that research, however, has been applied to studying the effects of culture on the learner's perceptions of teacher and student roles, specifically in the area of second language learning. What is available often appears in the form of anecdotal descriptions of teaching and learning experiences abroad. A possible reason for the lack of investigation of student views in this area has been the absence of an adequate measuring device with …

Adult Student Perceptions Of Traditionally Sex-Typed Toys, Shelly Lynn Jackson Jan 1992

Adult Student Perceptions Of Traditionally Sex-Typed Toys, Shelly Lynn Jackson

Dissertations and Theses

studies have examined children's toy preferences as they relate to sex-role development. However, studies have failed to examine the dimensions of the toys themselves. Because adults purchase the majority of toys children receive, this study sought to determine adult student perceptions of children's traditionally sex-typed toys. Eighty-one participants rated ten selected toys. Multidimensional scaling analysis revealed five underlying dimensions. The five dimensions included Productive Play, Sociability, Structure, Gender, and Age. It was discovered that the Gender dimension was less salient than both the Productive Play and Sociability dimensions. The dimensions pertaining to each toy are discussed.

The Percentage Consonants Correct And Intelligibility Of Normal, Language Delayed, And History Of Language Delayed Children, Randi Jartun Jan 1992

The Percentage Consonants Correct And Intelligibility Of Normal, Language Delayed, And History Of Language Delayed Children, Randi Jartun

Dissertations and Theses

Highly unintelligible children may mistakenly be assumed to have difficulty only with the misarticulation of consonants. Expressive language concerns may be ignored while the primary focus of intervention becomes the correction of misarticulated speech. Questions have arisen regarding the possibility of both speech and expressive language difficulties contributing to unintelligibility. Shriberg and Kwiatkowski (1982) developed an ordinal means of rating severity of involvement. One of the constructs of the severity scale was intelligibility. The metric percentage consonants correct (PCC) was developed to identify severity of involvement of disorders of phonology.

Tapered Radio Frequency Transmission Lines, Vincent D. Matarrese Jan 1992

Tapered Radio Frequency Transmission Lines, Vincent D. Matarrese

Dissertations and Theses

A transformation used to obtain solutions for the beam parameter equation of fiber optics is applied to the second order differential equation for nonuniform transmission lines. Methods are developed for deriving possible transmission line tapers from known solutions of the transformed equation. This study begins with a comprehensive overview of previous work done to obtain closed-form solutions for the transmission line equations. Limitations of the lumped parameter model are also discussed. As part of this thesis, a tapered transmission line is constructed, based on one of the solutions obtained from the fiber optics studies. A discussion of the design and …

Characterization Of Quantization Noise In Oversampled Analog To Digital Converters, Eric W. Multanen Jan 1992

Characterization Of Quantization Noise In Oversampled Analog To Digital Converters, Eric W. Multanen

Dissertations and Theses

The analog to digital converter (ADC) samples a continuous analog signal and produces a stream of digital words which approximate the analog signal. The conversion process introduces noise into the digital signal. In the case of an ideal ADC, where all noise sources are ignored, the noise due to the quantization process remains. The resolution of the ADC is defined by how many bits are in the digital output word. The amount of quantization noise is clearly related to the resolution of the ADC. Reducing the quantization noise results in higher effective resolution.

Parameter Uncertainty And Modeling Of Sludge Dewatering In One Dimension, Joseph H. Plaskett Jan 1992

Parameter Uncertainty And Modeling Of Sludge Dewatering In One Dimension, Joseph H. Plaskett

Dissertations and Theses

Separation of liquid from solids is a necessary step in the ultimate disposal of wastewater sludges. Most commonly, sludges are dewatered by pressure-filtration methods. Mathematical models of the physics of the sludge dewatering process would provide the ability to predict dewatering performance and optimize the design and operation of dewatering facilities.

Regional Tectonic Deformation Of The Northern Oregon Coast As Recorded By Pleistocene Marine Terraces, Richard Alan Mulder Jan 1992

Regional Tectonic Deformation Of The Northern Oregon Coast As Recorded By Pleistocene Marine Terraces, Richard Alan Mulder

Dissertations and Theses

Pleistocene marine terraces of the northern Oregon coast are an important factor in understanding the tectonics and paleoseismicity of the central Cascadia subduction zone. The lowest marine terrace, tentatively correlated to 80,000 year old Whiskey Run terrace of southern Oregon, is intermittently exposed in the present day sea cliff along an 80 km section of coastline between Tillamook Head and Cape Kiwanda. Terrace sediments consist largely of fine material such as clay, silt and fine sand with several locations containing large amounts of gravel derived from nearby headlands and steep bedrock hills. The terrace sediments are interpreted to be deposited …

Student Scheduling, Nathan T. Hardee, William A. Owings, Wayne Wright

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

[First Paragraph] Developing the master schedule and subsequent student schedules is one of the most important administrative tasks of the principal. Ensuring that appropriate courses are offered and that teachers are teaching courses they want to teach can go a long way toward creating a positive climate and an atmosphere where learning occurs. There are three ways in which student schedules can be developed: Computer, arena, and manual. Each approach has its own strengths and weaknesses. Principals must decide which approach is best for the school based on philosophy and available resources.

[First paragraph] The principal must observe teachers to improve and evaluate effectiveness. Since instructional planning is one of the keys to good instruction, one component of improving teacher effectiveness is the lesson plan. This article provides two formats for lesson planning: a narrative approach and a skeleton approach. Although the ideas in this article may be used whenever written plans are required, not all written plans require elaborate detail.

Fodder Trees And Shrubs For High Rainfall Areas Of South Western Australia, Daya Patabendige, P R. Scott, Edward C. Lefroy

Resource management technical reports

In south Western Australia, the lack of good quality feed in late summer and autumn is a major constraint to livestock production. This feed gap is usually filled by costly supplementary hand feeding of grain or hay. The ability of some trees and shrubs to provide good quality forage during summer and autumn has generated interest for many years (Corbett, 1951; Everist, 1969; Snook, 1987;Oldham et al., 1991, Lefroy, 1991). The dual benefits of reducing the need for supplementary hand feeding and deferring the grazing of annual pastures until they are well established has recently led to the recognition of …

Integrated Environmental Control: The Expanding Matrix, Lakshman Guruswamy Jan 1992

Integrated Environmental Control: The Expanding Matrix, Lakshman Guruswamy

Publications

Professor Guruswamy addresses the configuration of forces creating global warming, and canvasses the action necessary to deal with this challenge. He identifies key reasons accounting for the failure of the United States to take adequate measures to control emissions of carbon dioxide at the national level, and for resisting international attempts to do so. Guruswamy argues that the problem of global warming should be dealt with within the framework of Integrated Environmental Control (IEC)--a radical approach to pollution prevention and modification of product demand. He reasons that by encompassing energy policy within the matrix of pollution control, IEC will promote …
