Increasing Parent Involvement In The Reevaluation Process Of High School Level Special Education Students By Accommodating Scheduled Meeting Times Valuing Parent Input And Sensitizing Parents And Staff To The Needs And The Rights Of Handicapped Students, Larry Taylor

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The practicum was designed to address the problem of relatively few parents involving themselves in the reevaluation process of high school level special education students. The intervention sought to increase parent involvement in the development of their child’s academic and career/vocational programs.

The writer developed a three-month program and designed a comprehensive system which included personal attempts to get parents to attend reevaluation meetings. This design also incorporated a component where parents’ input in decision making was welcomed. Both parent training and staff training were conducted and deemed important parts of not just a short term solution to increase attendance …

Gender Influences In The College Classroom: Optimizing The Learning Environment For Women, Susan Ross Bell Jan 1992

Gender Influences In The College Classroom: Optimizing The Learning Environment For Women, Susan Ross Bell

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Administrators at Missouri Southern State College (MSSC) recently identified increasing student retention as a major goal. Consistent with postsecondary institutions across the country, women students at MSSC are the "new majority" of undergraduates. An effective retention effort would require identification of women's unique learning needs and the implications for teaching and learning.

Since the majority of MSSC students are commuters, the classroom represents their major learning environment. Few faculty members were aware of gender influences in the classroom and their effect on women's learning. The purpose of the project was to identify women's unique learning needs and recommend teaching practices …

Development Of A Promotional Plan For Programs For Higher Education, Joseph E. Campbell Jan 1992

Development Of A Promotional Plan For Programs For Higher Education, Joseph E. Campbell

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Since 1976, Nova University’s Programs for Higher Education have awarded more than 1800 Ed.D.’s to working professionals in various areas of higher education. One of the main problems facing Nova University’s Programs for Higher Education has been its continued ability to attract, admit, and enroll students, who will successfully complete the program, in a changing and increasingly competitive environment. Name recognition, lack of knowledge about the quality of the program, as well as continued misconceptions about the validity of an external degree frequently cause enrollment problems. Also, the program has not comprehensively reviewed its on going promotional activities in several …

Development And Validation Of A Computer Keyboarding Seminar For Use In The United States Army, Europe, Robert R. Brooks

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purposes of this research project were to (1) develop a computer keyboarding seminar for personnel with units of the U.S. Army in Europe, (2) validate that seminar, and (3) develop plans for implementation and evaluation. The need for such a program was evident, as Army units in Europe must arrange local training for many personnel who use computers but who have never been trained because formal training courses have not been modified to include computer keyboarding. The need for- local keyboard training will continue because computers are being increasingly used by Army personnel in more activities. The following research …

The Development And Implementation Of A Program To Reduce At-Risk Students At Palm Springs Middle School, Allan R. Bonilla

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report describes a program to reduce the number of students failing classes and subsequently being retained at Palm Springs Middle School. The number of students considered to be "at-risk" as determined by country-developed criteria has been historically high in relation to other middle schools. It is believed that the needs of the Hispanic student, in this predominately Hispanic school, are not being adequately addressed or met.

Probable causes of problems include the limited-English proficiency of many of the students and the inability of the curriculum to assist them the many students who enter school after school has begun, and …

Developing An In-School Suspension Program In An Elementary School As An Alternative To Home-Bound Suspension, Jerry Guindon

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This practicum was developed to address the staff concerns at an elementary school of frequent out-of-school suspensions (OSS) resulting from misbehavior referrals to the principal's office. The staff felt that suspended students were often rewarded by OSS, at risk on the streets, interrupted in their schooling and that they often continued to be repeatedly suspended.

With the school principal's permission, the writer developed an in-school suspension program (ISS) which served as a better alternative to sending students home. ISS was more punitive, safer, more instructive and more rehabilitative.

Collected data over a four-month period reveal that the school principal suspended …

The Flip Side Of Twist Cap: Letters Of Credit As Executory Contracts In Bankruptcy, Stephen M. Mcjohn Jan 1992

The Flip Side Of Twist Cap: Letters Of Credit As Executory Contracts In Bankruptcy, Stephen M. Mcjohn

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

This article analyzes the treatment of letters of credit as executory contracts in bankruptcy. Some courts had stated that the bankruptcy of the beneficiary terminates a letter of credit. This article concludes that decisions were incorrect in treating a letter of credit as an executory contract to provide financial accommodations to the beneficiary. A letter of credit is not a means to provide credit to the beneficiary: it is a means to provide credit to the applicant (and thereby allowing the applicant and beneficiary to avoid extending credit to each other). The issuer is not dependent on the credit risk …

The Labyrinth Of The Wind And The Artifice Of Eternity: A Study Of The Lyric Poetry Of William Butler Yeats, Danita Sain Stokes Jan 1992

The Labyrinth Of The Wind And The Artifice Of Eternity: A Study Of The Lyric Poetry Of William Butler Yeats, Danita Sain Stokes

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study of the lyric poetry of William Butler Yeats concentrates on his ideas about nature and art, with a focus on the imagery of the wind. Though each of Yeats's poems may be read and enjoyed individually, a study of the body of Yeats's lyric poems gives the reader a better understanding of a symbol such as the wind. As a whole, the poems form a narrative of the development of Yeats's mind; by looking closely at the single symbol of the wind, we gain insight into the development of Yeats's ideas about art and nature. In Yeats's early …

Regression Trees Versus Stepwise Regression, Mary Christine Jacobs Jan 1992

Regression Trees Versus Stepwise Regression, Mary Christine Jacobs

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many methods have been developed to determine the "appropriate" subset of independent variables in a multiple variable problem. Some of the methods are application specific while others have a wide range of uses. This study compares two such methods, Regression Trees and Stepwise Regression. A simulation using a known distribution is used for the comparison. In 699 out of 742 cases the Regression Tree method gave better predictors than the Stepwise Regression procedure.

Appeals On The Merits, Terence G. Ison Jan 1992

Appeals On The Merits, Terence G. Ison

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article deals with the limitations of judicial review and the possibilities of its augmentation or replacement by a regime of appeals on the merits. The author questions some assumptions that are commonly made about appellate structures. He criticizes the "broad-brush approach" and warns that there is no panacea. The article explains why any broad regime of appeals on the merits from tribunals to courts of general jurisdiction is not an available option, and it discusses alternative structures of appeals to tribunals. Finally, it explains why it would be irresponsible to propose any appellate structure covering any substantive subject except …

The Efficacy Of The Tort System And Its Alternatives: A Review Of Empirical Evidence, Don Dewees, Michael J. Trebilcock Jan 1992

The Efficacy Of The Tort System And Its Alternatives: A Review Of Empirical Evidence, Don Dewees, Michael J. Trebilcock

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This paper reviews the existing empirical evidence on the efficacy of the tort system and alternatives to it. The evidence is evaluated against three normative goals: deterrence, corrective justice, and distributive justice. Empirical evidence relating to five major categories of accidents is reviewed: automobile accidents, medical malpractice, product related accidents, environmental injuries, and workplace injuries. In each case, the paper proceeds by reviewing empirical evidence on the deterrence and compensatory properties of the tort system, and then reviews parallel bodies of evidence on regulatory or penal alternatives and on compensatory alternatives to the tort system. The paper concludes that the …

A Black (And Rising?) Tide: Controlling Maritime Oil Pollution In Canada, Suzanne Hawkes, Michael M'Gonigle Jan 1992

A Black (And Rising?) Tide: Controlling Maritime Oil Pollution In Canada, Suzanne Hawkes, Michael M'Gonigle

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

A series of dramatic oil spills in recent years has once again drawn critical attention to the nature and adequacy of existing domestic and international legislation regarding ship source oil pollution. Predictably, legislators and policy makers have responded with a plethora of studies, reviews, and consultations. However, past improvements to the domestic and international regimes have traditionally been slow and incremental, at best. In Canada, approximately three years have passed since the Nestucca spill took place off the B.C. coast. Yet, while there has been much discussion, domestic legislation remains virtually unaltered at the present time. The authors find that …

Stoical Sanctity: The Ethics Of Virtue And The Theology Of Robertson Davies, Eric Richard Griffin Jan 1992

Stoical Sanctity: The Ethics Of Virtue And The Theology Of Robertson Davies, Eric Richard Griffin

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Robertson Davies is, by his own definition and admission, both a religious novelist and a moralist. His writings evince a consistent theology that, aside from one or two departures, is quite within the liberal protestant tradition, despite his own claims to unorthodoxy. His theology is a moral theology, and the ethical theory or method most in keeping with Davies‘ approach is the "virtue" or "character" model. His claims of dualism and unorthodoxy have been seen to exhibit a "contemporary gnostic spirit," but it is my assertion that they do not; the teachings of the ancient Stoics, however, are much in …

The Principle Of Hou: A Source For Chinese Christian Ethics, Ambrose Pui Ho Tsui Jan 1992

The Principle Of Hou: A Source For Chinese Christian Ethics, Ambrose Pui Ho Tsui

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In this paper, I have no intention to write about Chinese culture as such. The only purpose is to arouse the interest of thinking about Chinese culture in relation to Christian Ethics. To begin with, I write about the structure of Chinese society in which family is the base of it. In order to relate how the spirit of hou is in relation with Chinese culture, I try to explain how the principle of hou knits the Chinese society together. Then I go on to show how hou is related to all aspects of Chinese social life and how hou …

The Person Of Paul: A Study In The Apostle's Ethical Appeal, John W. Marshall Jan 1992

The Person Of Paul: A Study In The Apostle's Ethical Appeal, John W. Marshall

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Understanding Paul’s ethos is essential to understanding the persuasive power of Paul’s writing. This thesis uses Paul’s letter to the Philippians as a test case for the study of Paul’s appeal through ethos. The guiding body of theory for the study (Chapter 2) is classic rhetoric, especially as developed by Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian, and the Rhetorica ad Herrenium. The results of this chapter are a working definition of ethos for the purposes of study, and an understanding of the relationship of ethos to the deliberative genus. Chapter 3 provides an introduction to the basic questions which affect any detailed study …

Among the many influential preachers and writers of the Evangelical Revival in the Church of England in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century was Thomas Scott (1747-1821). The most widely read of all his publications was his 1779 Force of Truth which went through 12 editions in his lifetime.
