Over the last few decades, small-scale projects have been developed throughout Africa to help incorporate women farmers into the mainstream of agricultural extension services. This edition of SEEDS presents an interesting example from Zambia's Western Province—the Women's Extension Program, located within the Home Economics Section of the Department of Agriculture. This program is working to change a government agricultural bureaucracy from within by redefining mandates, encouraging attitude change through staff training, broadening village-level opportunities and perceptions, and widening technical and economic research agendas. Quantitative characteristics of the temporal structure of Thai words is not well documented. Even less information is available on how normal aging may affect the speech production abilities of older Thai adults. The present study examined temporal characteristics of 10 normal, young adults and 10 old adults who produced monosyllabic, bisyllabic, and trisyllabic words at a normal speaking rate. Acoustic analysis indicated that both young and old speakers reduced duration of nonfinal syllables as words increased in length. Timing patterns were generally comparable between groups whether based on absolute or relative scales of measurement. However, old speakers were generally more …

This paper reports the results of a study derived from a model of intrinsic motivation that emphasizes the balance between the degree of challenge inherent in a particular activity and the skills that one brings to the activity. Using a method successfully utilized with North American and European populations, the motivational states of Thai learners of English were assessed in language class, at work, at leisure and during maintenance activities. Few relationships were found between the levels of challenge and skill involved in an activity and the reported level of motivation or other affective states. Several reasons why the predictions …

The English language is international and, as such, should be viewed as culturally neutral. Conversational "competence," specifically "appropriateness" ("polite speech"), should be determined by the cultural setting in which an interaction in English occurs. In Thailand the use of English is cross-cultural. Judgements of competence should not be based on foreign and alien notions derived from "norms" of Western culture and society. Cultural differences ought not to be viewed only as a source of difficulty in the cross-cultural situation, but rather as contributing to and enhancing the interaction. Communicative Call Activities In The Thai Context, Kanchana Prapphal

Active CALL activities were tested with twenty-two first-year science students attending the general Foundation English course at Chulalongkom University in 1991. The students felt that these activities helped them to improve vocabulary and reading skills as well as grammar. Apart from these linguistic skills, the CALL activities enabled them to co-operate, use a word processor and learn more about the world. Among the various activities, songs were the students' favorite.

This paper presents the findings of a study on student's perceptions regarding the use of simulations to teach advanced speaking skills at the tertiary level. Data for the study was provided by two surveys carried out over a period of two semesters on a group of second year BA in English Studies' students from the Language Centre (Pusat Bahasa), University Kebangsaan Malaysia.
