Effect Of Temperature And Humidity On Evaporative Water Loss In Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte Anna), Donald R. Powers Jan 1992

Effect Of Temperature And Humidity On Evaporative Water Loss In Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte Anna), Donald R. Powers

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Evaporative water loss (EWL), oxygen concumption (V0 ), and body temperature (Tb) of Anna's 2 Hummingbirds (Calypte anna; ca. 4.5 g) were measured at combinations of ambient temperature (T J and water vapor density (Qva) ranging from 20 to 37 °C and 2 to 27 g · m-3 , respectively. The EWL decreased linearly with increasing eva at all temperatures. The slopes ofleast squares regression lines relating EWL to Qva at different temperatures were not significantly different and averaged -0.50mg H20·m-3 ·g-2 ·h-1 (range: -0.39 to -0.61). Increased Qva restricted EWL in C. anna more than has been reported for …

Thermal Mathematical Modeling Of A Multicell Common Pressure Vessel Nickel-Hydrogen Battery, Junbom Kim, T. V. Nguyen, Ralph E. White Jan 1992

Thermal Mathematical Modeling Of A Multicell Common Pressure Vessel Nickel-Hydrogen Battery, Junbom Kim, T. V. Nguyen, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A two-dimensional and time-dependent thermal model of a multicell common pressure vessel (CPV) nickel-hydrogen battery was developed. A finite element solver called PDE/Protran was used to solve this model. The model was used to investigate the effects of various design parameters on the temperature profile within the cell. The results were used to help find a design that will yield an acceptable temperature gradient inside a multicell CPV nickel-hydrogen battery. Steady-state and unsteady-state cases with a constant heat generation rate and a time-dependent heat generation rate were solved.

Comparison Of Heat-Fin Materials And Design Of A Common-Pressure-Vessel Nickel-Hydrogen Battery, Junbom Kim, Ralph E. White Jan 1992

Comparison Of Heat-Fin Materials And Design Of A Common-Pressure-Vessel Nickel-Hydrogen Battery, Junbom Kim, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A two-dimensional, axisymmetric, and time-dependent thermal model was developed to study the temperature behavior of the cylindrically shaped common-pressure-vessel nickel-hydrogen cell. A differential-energy-balance equation was used as the governing equation. A finite-element software package called PDE/Protran was used to solve this model. Different materials such as copper, copper beryllium, silver, and sterling silver were compared as heat-fin materials. The heat-fin geometry (thickness and height) and spacing were tested to find a design that yielded an acceptable temperature gradient inside a nickel-hydrogen cell. Pulse heat-generation rates were tested and correlated with the time-dependent heat-generation cases.

Mathematical Modeling Of A Primary Zinc/Air Battery, Z. Mao, Ralph E. White Jan 1992

Mathematical Modeling Of A Primary Zinc/Air Battery, Z. Mao, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

The mathematical model developed by Sunu and Bennion has been extended to include the separator, precipitation of both solid ZnO and K2Zn(OH)4, and the air electrode, and has been used to investigate the behavior of a primary Zn-Air battery with respect to battery design features. Predictions obtained from the model indicate that anode material utilizationis predominantly limited by depletion of the concentration of hydroxide ions. The effect of electrode thickness on anode material utilization is insignificant, whereas material loading per unit volume has a great effect on anode material utilization; a higher loading lowers both the …

Removal Of Mercury From Waste Water: Large-Scale Performance Of An Ion Exchange Process, James A. Ritter, J. P. Bibler Jan 1992

Removal Of Mercury From Waste Water: Large-Scale Performance Of An Ion Exchange Process, James A. Ritter, J. P. Bibler

Faculty Publications

Duolite™ GT-73 ion exchange resin routinely reduces the mercury content of a waste water stream to less than the permitted level of 10 ppb. Effluent concentrations from the ion exchange facility (IEF) are consistently between 1 to 5 ppb, even though the feed contains a varying concentration of mercury (0.2 to 70 ppm). Two operational problems have been encountered at that facility, however. Firstly, the stated capacity of the resin for mercury was not being achieved. The abnormally low capacity was traced to analytical laboratory waste which was intermittently treated by the resin. That waste contained hydrochloric acid, stannous chloride, …

A Radiant Flow Reactor For High-Temperature Reactivity Studies Of Pulverized Solids, John C. Chen, Stephen Niksa Jan 1992

A Radiant Flow Reactor For High-Temperature Reactivity Studies Of Pulverized Solids, John C. Chen, Stephen Niksa

Mechanical Engineering

Our radiant two‐phase flow reactor presents several new possibilities for high‐temperature reactivity studies. Most importantly, the thermal histories of the suspension and entrainment gas can be independently regulated over wide ranges. At low suspension loadings, outlet temperatures can differ by hundreds of degrees and gas temperatures are low enough to inhibit hydrocarbon cracking chemistry, so primary products are quenched as soon as they are expelled. With coal suspensions, tars were generated with the highest H/C ratio and lowest proton aromaticity ever reported. Alternatively, particles and gas can be heated at similar rates to promote secondary chemistry by increasing particle loading. …

Suppressed Nitrogen Evolution From Coal-Derived Soot And Low-Volatility Coal Chars, John C. Chen, Stephen Niksa Jan 1992

Suppressed Nitrogen Evolution From Coal-Derived Soot And Low-Volatility Coal Chars, John C. Chen, Stephen Niksa

Mechanical Engineering

This laboratory study uses a novel furnace to resolve nitrogen evolution during the three stages of pulverized coal combustion: primary devolatilization, secondary pyrolysis, and combustion. The behavior of six coals depicts continuous rank variations, as well as suppressed nitrogen evolution from low volatility coals. During primary devolatilization of any coal, aromatic compounds in tar and oils are virtually the only shuttles for nitrogen out of the coal matrix. The small amounts of HCN observed while primary devolatilization winds down probably come from the char, because char particles are significantly hotter than tar in these experiments. Secondary pyrolysis promotes additional HCN …

Positive Solutions And J-Focal Points For Two-Point Boundary Value Problems, Paul W. Eloe, Darrel Hankerson, Johnny Henderson Jan 1992

Positive Solutions And J-Focal Points For Two-Point Boundary Value Problems, Paul W. Eloe, Darrel Hankerson, Johnny Henderson

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Cone theory is applied to a class of two-point boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations. Criteria for the existence of extremal points are obtained. These criteria are in terms of the existence of nontrivial solutions that lie in a cone, and in terms of the spectral radius of an associated compact linear operator.

Teaching Public Speaking As Composition, Michael Leff Jan 1992

Teaching Public Speaking As Composition, Michael Leff

Basic Communication Course Annual

The public speaking course has changed little during the past two decades, despite the rapid and profound changes that have occurred in rhetorical scholarship. By contrast, the basic composition course in English Departments has undergone transformations that more closely reflect the development of the scholarship. One reason for this difference may rest in our failure to regard the public speaking course as a serious part of our mission as teachers and scholars. By concentrating on the rhetoric of composition. we might not only generate innovative and theoretically interesting approaches to pedagogy, but we might improve our rhetorical scholarship by connecting …

New Reaction Conditions For The Synthesis Of Wieland-Miescher Ketone, Jonathan J. Bates Jan 1992

New Reaction Conditions For The Synthesis Of Wieland-Miescher Ketone, Jonathan J. Bates

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Natural products chemistry is a very important field of chemistry to chemists, biochemists, and biologists. The ability to synthesize a naturally occurring chemical in the laboratory is necessary for some experiments. Often it is difficult to isolate a large quantity of a compound from its natural source when needed for certain experiments. Established procedures for artificial synthesis of this compound can produce higher yields. Sometimes, the function of a natural product is tested by observing the behavior of analogues in the same biological system. The differences in behavior can be related to differences in structure . Since such analogues are …

Life In The Red: Inefficiency In The Iowa State Budget Process, Michael Mrosko Jan 1992

Life In The Red: Inefficiency In The Iowa State Budget Process, Michael Mrosko

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

I have proposed in my thesis that this deficit, and some of the extreme financial problems in the state of Iowa, can be explained and solved, in part, by a study of and improvement on inefficiency in the state's budget -process and procedure. I have focused on a number of problems that exist in the budget process and have examined them from both an analytical and a practical/social approach.

The body of my thesis will focus on the following three areas:

The process involved in developing the Iowa state Budget.

The problems and inefficiency associated with the budget and how …

Kinetic Family Drawings Of Chinese-American Children, Verna Nga-Fun Chuah Jan 1992

Kinetic Family Drawings Of Chinese-American Children, Verna Nga-Fun Chuah

Dissertations

Problem. America is a country enriched with a diversity of cultural backgrounds. Information on Chinese-American children and their families is limited even though the Chinese are one of the main minority groups in America and increasingly more Chinese are migrating here. This study sought to use the Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD) as a tool to gain information about how Chinese-American children perceive themselves and their family relationships.

Method. The KFD was administered to 146 Chinese-Americans from three schools in Northern California: one in Oakland Chinatown, one in San Francisco Chinatown, and one private suburban San Francisco school. The 71 Caucasian-American …

Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System Tile Bond Integrity, George David Mulligan Jan 1992

Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System Tile Bond Integrity, George David Mulligan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Experimental modal analysis (EMA) is used as a non-destructive technique for the evaluation of Space Shuttle thermal protection system (TPS) tile bond integrity. Finite element (FE) models for tile systems were developed and were used to generate their vibration characteristics (i.e. natural frequencies and mode shapes). Various TPS tile assembly configurations as well as different bond conditions were analyzed. Results of finite element analyses demonstrated a drop in natural frequencies and a change in mode shapes which correlate with both size and location of disband. Results of experimental testing of tile panels correlated with FE results and demonstrated the feasibility …

A Concept Of The Secondary Principal And The School: A Reflective Essay, Richard W. Suchy Jan 1992

A Concept Of The Secondary Principal And The School: A Reflective Essay, Richard W. Suchy

Graduate Research Papers

Having been a teacher for more than twenty years, I felt that I had a good understanding of the role of the principal as I began my educational administration program. Through my experiences the last several years, both in and out of my educational administration courses, I have found that what I knew was less than what I did not know. I have gained experience and understanding, and I welcome the opportunity to continue to learn as well as the opportunity to lead. This paper focuses on those elements of education and administration that either have been new to me …

When Is An Amendment Not An Amendment? Modification Of Arms Control Agreements Without The Senate, David A. Koplow Jan 1992

When Is An Amendment Not An Amendment? Modification Of Arms Control Agreements Without The Senate, David A. Koplow

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The tempest over the proposed "reinterpretation" of the Anti- Ballistic Missile Treaty has only barely been stilled, and the full impact of the dissolution and reorganization of the Soviet Union is far from clear. But already we can detect early warnings about the next probable source of intense constitutional conflict between the American executive branch and the Congress in their ongoing struggle for primacy in the conduct of United States foreign relations. This imminent battle-again arising in the context of disarmament treaties, perhaps the most controversial and crucial aspect of America's international public policy-has not yet been fully joined. But …

Processing Effects On A Context-Sensitive Fragment Completion Test, Brenda Darlene Nash Jan 1992

Processing Effects On A Context-Sensitive Fragment Completion Test, Brenda Darlene Nash

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The present research examined the effects of conceptual processing on the implicit test of fragment completion. At study, subjects either generated a sentence to a word pair, solved a fragment (this fragment was paired with another word), or counted the number of vowels in a word pair. Subjects were tested on either a standard fragment completion test or a test in which the fragment was embedded in a meaningful sentence. This sentence also contained the other member of the studied pair. The fragment could be completed with the studied word or with another reasonable alternative. The results revealed functional independence …

Living On The Edge: Families' Experience Of Developmental Disability And Mental Illness Across The Life Cycle, Don R. Roth Jan 1992

Living On The Edge: Families' Experience Of Developmental Disability And Mental Illness Across The Life Cycle, Don R. Roth

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This qualitative research document provides an in-depth description of families’ experience of both developmental disability and mental illness (i.e., "dual diagnosis") across the life cycle. This thesis is devoted to listening to family members as they tell their story beginning with the early years of family life, then through childhood and adolescence, and into young adulthood with their family member. This research describes the process of how families developed a framework to interpret and make sense of the world around them. Then, the research integrates these families’ experience over the life cycle with models of family stress and coping in …

Base Rates, Individuating Information, Expertise, And Transfer Of Knowledge In Judgment Under Uncertainty, Owen Helmkay Jan 1992

Base Rates, Individuating Information, Expertise, And Transfer Of Knowledge In Judgment Under Uncertainty, Owen Helmkay

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Numerous studies suggest that in judging an individual’s category membership, people largely ignore the population frequency membership in the category (base rate information) in favour of the individuating information about that particular individual (more commonly referred to as the “Base Rate Fallcy”: Bar-Hillel, 1980). One particularly interesting strategy that has been shown to increase the use of base rate information is what Ginossar and Trope (1987) refer to as the Prior Activation Assumption. The purpose of this thesis was to extend the boundaries of Ginossar and Trope’s (1987) findings by enhancing participants’ use of base rate information through the manipulation …

The Impact Of Hierarchical Relationship Quality On The Content And Timing Of Evaluative Feedback: An Affectively-Driven Process Model, Peter Lawrence Egan Jan 1992

The Impact Of Hierarchical Relationship Quality On The Content And Timing Of Evaluative Feedback: An Affectively-Driven Process Model, Peter Lawrence Egan

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

A review of the literature revealed that interpersonal affect has been relatively neglected as a potential moderator of the performance feedback process. In an attempt to ameliorate this oversight, a model was proposed which views supervisors’ feedback behavior as being the product of a set of social cognitive operations, all of which may be regarded as having their basis in affective responses. A laboratory study was undertaken to assess the validity of the proposed linkages in the model. While all of the connections did not receive empirical support, affect. was found to influence certain aspects of supervisors’ feedback and evaluative …
