Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System Tile Bond Integrity, George David Mulligan
Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System Tile Bond Integrity, George David Mulligan
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Experimental modal analysis (EMA) is used as a non-destructive technique for the evaluation of Space Shuttle thermal protection system (TPS) tile bond integrity. Finite element (FE) models for tile systems were developed and were used to generate their vibration characteristics (i.e. natural frequencies and mode shapes). Various TPS tile assembly configurations as well as different bond conditions were analyzed. Results of finite element analyses demonstrated a drop in natural frequencies and a change in mode shapes which correlate with both size and location of disband. Results of experimental testing of tile panels correlated with FE results and demonstrated the feasibility …

A Concept Of The Secondary Principal And The School: A Reflective Essay, Richard W. Suchy
A Concept Of The Secondary Principal And The School: A Reflective Essay, Richard W. Suchy
Graduate Research Papers
Having been a teacher for more than twenty years, I felt that I had a good understanding of the role of the principal as I began my educational administration program. Through my experiences the last several years, both in and out of my educational administration courses, I have found that what I knew was less than what I did not know. I have gained experience and understanding, and I welcome the opportunity to continue to learn as well as the opportunity to lead. This paper focuses on those elements of education and administration that either have been new to me …
When Is An Amendment Not An Amendment? Modification Of Arms Control Agreements Without The Senate, David A. Koplow
When Is An Amendment Not An Amendment? Modification Of Arms Control Agreements Without The Senate, David A. Koplow
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The tempest over the proposed "reinterpretation" of the Anti- Ballistic Missile Treaty has only barely been stilled, and the full impact of the dissolution and reorganization of the Soviet Union is far from clear. But already we can detect early warnings about the next probable source of intense constitutional conflict between the American executive branch and the Congress in their ongoing struggle for primacy in the conduct of United States foreign relations. This imminent battle-again arising in the context of disarmament treaties, perhaps the most controversial and crucial aspect of America's international public policy-has not yet been fully joined. But …
Processing Effects On A Context-Sensitive Fragment Completion Test, Brenda Darlene Nash
Processing Effects On A Context-Sensitive Fragment Completion Test, Brenda Darlene Nash
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The present research examined the effects of conceptual processing on the implicit test of fragment completion. At study, subjects either generated a sentence to a word pair, solved a fragment (this fragment was paired with another word), or counted the number of vowels in a word pair. Subjects were tested on either a standard fragment completion test or a test in which the fragment was embedded in a meaningful sentence. This sentence also contained the other member of the studied pair. The fragment could be completed with the studied word or with another reasonable alternative. The results revealed functional independence …
Living On The Edge: Families' Experience Of Developmental Disability And Mental Illness Across The Life Cycle, Don R. Roth
Living On The Edge: Families' Experience Of Developmental Disability And Mental Illness Across The Life Cycle, Don R. Roth
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This qualitative research document provides an in-depth description of families’ experience of both developmental disability and mental illness (i.e., "dual diagnosis") across the life cycle. This thesis is devoted to listening to family members as they tell their story beginning with the early years of family life, then through childhood and adolescence, and into young adulthood with their family member. This research describes the process of how families developed a framework to interpret and make sense of the world around them. Then, the research integrates these families’ experience over the life cycle with models of family stress and coping in …
Base Rates, Individuating Information, Expertise, And Transfer Of Knowledge In Judgment Under Uncertainty, Owen Helmkay
Base Rates, Individuating Information, Expertise, And Transfer Of Knowledge In Judgment Under Uncertainty, Owen Helmkay
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Numerous studies suggest that in judging an individual’s category membership, people largely ignore the population frequency membership in the category (base rate information) in favour of the individuating information about that particular individual (more commonly referred to as the “Base Rate Fallcy”: Bar-Hillel, 1980). One particularly interesting strategy that has been shown to increase the use of base rate information is what Ginossar and Trope (1987) refer to as the Prior Activation Assumption. The purpose of this thesis was to extend the boundaries of Ginossar and Trope’s (1987) findings by enhancing participants’ use of base rate information through the manipulation …
The Impact Of Hierarchical Relationship Quality On The Content And Timing Of Evaluative Feedback: An Affectively-Driven Process Model, Peter Lawrence Egan
The Impact Of Hierarchical Relationship Quality On The Content And Timing Of Evaluative Feedback: An Affectively-Driven Process Model, Peter Lawrence Egan
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
A review of the literature revealed that interpersonal affect has been relatively neglected as a potential moderator of the performance feedback process. In an attempt to ameliorate this oversight, a model was proposed which views supervisors’ feedback behavior as being the product of a set of social cognitive operations, all of which may be regarded as having their basis in affective responses. A laboratory study was undertaken to assess the validity of the proposed linkages in the model. While all of the connections did not receive empirical support, affect. was found to influence certain aspects of supervisors’ feedback and evaluative …
Jesus The Healer, Jesus The Saviour: Toward A Holistic Understanding Of Salvation, Imre Istvan
Jesus The Healer, Jesus The Saviour: Toward A Holistic Understanding Of Salvation, Imre Istvan
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
It is the task of this paper to demonstrate the thesis that a more holistic view of salvation can lead to a new understanding of the healing ministry of the Church. The ministry of healing is often fragmented due to sectarian loyalties, each practitioner concentrating almost exclusively on his own small terrain in the vast field of wholeness. In fact, the personality includes not only the physical body and the rational mind but also an insistent will to purpose that drives us on to our finest endeavour, that makes our lives ultimately meaningful in the face of disease and death …

Fe Ii Fluorescence And Anomalous C Iv Doublet Intensities In Symbiotic Novae, A. G. Michalitsianos, Menas Kafatos, S. R. Meier
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Symbiotic stars frequently exhibit anomalous C IV λλ1548.2, 1550.8 doublet flux ratios, in which the intensity ratio of the blue and red doublet members is below the optically thick limit of unity. Three symbiotic stars (RR Tel, RX Pup, and AG Peg) have been investigated in detail with high-resolution spectra obtained from the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) archives. We have examined the deficit of C IV λ1548.2 emission relative to λ1550.8 in context with the fluorescent pumping of the Fe II multiplet (45.01) λ1548.204 by the C IV λ1548.2 line. In RR Tel the C IV λ1548.2 flux is correlated …
A Theorem On Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces Of Pairs, Daniel Alpay
A Theorem On Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces Of Pairs, Daniel Alpay
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper we study reproducing kernel Hilbert and Banach spaces of pairs. These are a generalization of reproducing kernel Krein spaces and, roughly speaking, consist of pairs of Hilbert (or Banach) spaces of functions in duality with respect to a sesquilinear form and admitting a left and right reproducing kernel. We first investigate some properties of these spaces of pairs. It is then proved that to every function K(z, ω) analytic in z and ω* there is a neighborhood of the origin that can be associated with a reproducing kernel Hilbert space of pairs with left reproducing kernel K(z, …
A Qualitative Case Study Of Chinese Teaching Assistants' Communication In The U.S. University Classroom, Lina Lu
Dissertations and Theses
This is an exploratory, interpretive study, focusing on classroom communication experiences of Chinese teaching assistants (CTA) in a U.S. university. The research asked: What are CTAs' experiences communicating in the U.S. university classroom? How do they interpret their experiences from their own perspective? And what is their emergent adaptation pattern to the U.S. university classroom?
A Civic Republican Justification For The Bureaucratic State, Mark Seidenfeld
A Civic Republican Justification For The Bureaucratic State, Mark Seidenfeld
Scholarly Publications
Scholars have debated the legitimacy of the modern administrative state since its rise in the early twentieth century. In this Article, Professor Seidenfeld argues that the political theory of civic republicanism, with its emphasis on citizen participation in government and deliberative decisionmaking, provides the best justification for the American bureaucracy. Beginning with an analysis of civic republican theory, he notes that it promises greater citizen involvement in political decisionmaking, yet at the same time threatens to increase government power. Professor Seidenfeld finds that the current regime of administrative law neither allows for the full realization of civic republicanism's potential nor …
