Characterization Of Secretory Membranes And Exocytotic Fusion, Gary Kaufman
Characterization Of Secretory Membranes And Exocytotic Fusion, Gary Kaufman
Honors Capstones
Rat pancreatic zymogen granules were studied to assess their role in exocytotic fusion. The granules were isolated by nitrogen cavitation and Percoll density gradient centrifugation. Apical membranes were isolated from the homogenate by a step- gradient and differential centrifugation. Both samples were then checked for purity via marker enzyme assays. Integral proteins were extracted with Triton-X114. Both membrane proteins and isolated integral membrane proteins were characterized by SDS gel electrophoresis. The results showed six candidate fusion proteins of molecular weight 64.1, 61.7, 56.8, 43.1, 42.1, and 14.8 kDal based on their relative hydrophobicity. Membrane fusogenicity was assessed by monitoring the …

Examining Didonato'S Damage Limitations And Mandatory Joinder Requirements - Greer V. Parsons, John M. Mccabe
Campbell Law Review
This Note will outline the evolution of wrongful death actions, with particular attention being given to the inclusion of unborn children under the providing statutes. It also traces North Carolina's legislative and judicial treatment of wrongful death actions. Next, the Note will discuss the inconsistencies created by ruling that pecuniary loss and loss of society and companionship cannot be recovered as a matter of law in a wrongful death action brought on behalf of viable fetus. It will argue that instead ,of limiting recovery as a matter of law, such damages should be addressed on a case-by-case basis and the …

Beer Drinking Smokers And Granola Crunchers: The Challenge Of Physically And Socially Accommodating Incompatible Winter Resort Market Segments, Russell E. Brayley
Visions in Leisure and Business
Earlier research which focuses on conflicts between participants in different kinds of recreational activity has demonstrated that the most intense forms of physical and social incompatibility exist between mechanized and non-mechanized recreationists. The purpose of this research effort was to describe and compare groups of individuals who are likely to stay at a resort primarily for the purpose of engaging in snowmobiling or cross-country skiing activities. Social incompatibility was clearly evident in the resort setting. Both snowmobilers and cross-country skiers believe that their outdoor space requirements can be accommodated in an integrated resort setting if proper design and management decisions …

Crisis Management In Tourist Destinations, Sevil F. Sonmez, Sheila J. Backman
Visions in Leisure and Business
Whether natural or caused by people, disasters have been and continue to be a part of life that communities must deal with. Tourism destinations are especially vulnerable to disaster occurrences due to their economic dependence on visitors and the need to maintain a positive image of attractiveness and safety for continued success. The past decade has witnessed numerous natural disasters in tourist destinations around the world; therefore, community leaders, local governments, and major industries need to be prepared for the worst.

Imagining Imagination: A Phenomenological Study Of Children's Drawings Of Imagination, Robert M. Callahan
Imagining Imagination: A Phenomenological Study Of Children's Drawings Of Imagination, Robert M. Callahan
Educational Studies Dissertations
A phenomenological study of imagination employing "archetypal hermeneutics." The theoretical background for the research comes from the disciplines of Archetypal Psychology and Ontological Design. The research focuses on 296 Kindergarten to fifth grade public school children's drawings of imagination within an educational setting and aims at understanding imagination and its educational value. The research demonstrates that images of imagination are purposeful and intelligible when viewed with imagination, and it provides distinctions regarding imagination's nature. Images seen imaginally were regarded as teachers which deepen learning, the artistic process, and living in the world. Conclusions challenge developmental theories of learning based on …

Most word and information processing systems arc designed for either large institutions or individual users. Institutions, of course, have benefitted greatly from emerging technologies. These users cover the spectrum of our economic, political, social, and cultural life: large corporations, banks, insurance companies, government agencies, schools, universities, armed services, hospitals, the media. Individual users have been more recent beneficiaries of technological advances, and the computer has begun to make inroads into the way people interact with one another, manage their affairs, and entertain themselves.

Status Of Platanthera Praeclara Sheviak & Bowles (Western Prairie Fringed Orchid) In The Platte River Valley In Nebraska From Hamilton To Garden Counties, Tanya E. Bray, Barbara L. Wilson
Biology Faculty Publications
During June and July, 1991, a search for western prairie fringed orchid was conducted in the Platte River Valley in central and west-central Nebraska. No orchids were found in the 370 sites surveyed. Factors which may contribute to the scarcity of this orchid in the area surveyed include drought conditions in the previous three years; habitat alteration by draining, ditching, herbicide application, mowing for hay, crop cultivation and planting of non-native species for hay fields; invasion of the area by trees; and the presence of alkaline soils in some areas

Administering Maturity: The Emergence Of Youth Service As A Rite Of Passage To Adult Citizenship, Timothy Dolan
School K-12
Over the course of the 1980s, a literature describing a new lost generation in America has caught the popular imagination, fueled to no small extent by the anxiety of aging baby-boomers over their offspring's fate. One manifestation of particular interest at the policy level has been a growing sentiment by opinion leaders in favor of establishing youth service as both a pragmatic remedy for meeting social needs, and as a rite of passage to bona-fide citizenship status.

Disabilities
The recently implemented National and Community Service Act of 1990 calls for Americans of all race, age, ability, and economic status to return to service in their community. To help facilitate this call to service, the National Commission on Community Service has allocated approximately 70 million dollars in grants. The Act focuses on the involvement of youth, including those who are economically disadvantaged and with disabilities. This paper discusses the challenges and opportunities faced by community service program planners and disability organizations, in their efforts to integrate volunteers with disabilities in service to the community.
