Smoking Behavior Of Women In A Chemical Dependency Treatment Program, Bonnie L. Hoeckelman Jan 1992

Smoking Behavior Of Women In A Chemical Dependency Treatment Program, Bonnie L. Hoeckelman

Theses

The research question which will be discussed is smoking behavior in women who are participating in a treatment program for chemical dependency . The women subjects were between 18 and 40 years old . This study explored the relationship between smoking behaviors and substance abuse behaviors including alcohol usage . A sample, chosen at random, completed a personnel interview and a questionnaire. The research identified several areas that were similar between the smoking behavior and substance abuse. These areas included environment, personality, peer relationships and situational cues. The associated behaviors that began at the preadolescent age carried over into the …

Jerusalem Of Grass, David Axelrod Jan 1992

Jerusalem Of Grass, David Axelrod

Ahsahta Press

Axelrod’s clarity of language shines in Jerusalem of Grass. Words hit notes high and sharp, and give us enough, more than enough, in their directness and simplicity. Landscape is always part of these poems, as are the sentiments of things missed, longed for, or needed. Paul Nelson writes, “Axelrod does not use Nature aesthetically to color language or event or situation, or for the state of human discourse, but as the now weird backdrop against which everything human still matters or does not, for him.”

The One Right Touch, Katharine Coles Jan 1992

The One Right Touch, Katharine Coles

Ahsahta Press

In her collection The One Right Touch, Utah poet Katharine Coles explores the sometimes delicate, sometimes sinewy workings of relationships between men and women. Lovers, spouses, brothers and sisters, as well as fathers and daughters are represented here as Coles speaks to each in all their complexity.

The collection includes the prize-winning poem “Sex As A Trope” as well as a longer work entitled “Provisions,” which is made up of ten small poems under the headings of “Hunting,” “Cultivation,” and “Gathering.” The sections interweave the stories of the speaker hunting with her father as a teenager, attending a party …

The Influence Of Content Development On The Effectiveness Of Instruction, Judith E. Rink, Karen E. French, Peter H. Werner, Susan Lynn, Amy Mays

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on student learning of different ways of structuring student practice of complex motor skills. Previous research indicated that students who practiced the volleyball set and serve with a four-step progression learned more than students who practiced only the final test for the same number of practice trials; the effect of motivation and practice focused on specific learning cues was unclear. The present study investigated the specific role of progression, refinement, and motivation in learning the volleyball set and serve. Ninth-grade students were randomly assigned to one of five groups: (a) …

Empirical Procedure That Uses Molecular Structure To Predict Enantioselectivity Of Chiral Stationary Phases, Alain Berthod, San Chun Chang, Daniel W. Armstrong Jan 1992

Empirical Procedure That Uses Molecular Structure To Predict Enantioselectivity Of Chiral Stationary Phases, Alain Berthod, San Chun Chang, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A total of 121 racemic compounds were separated In the normal-phase mode on a (S)-(1-naphthylethyl)carbamoylated β-cyclodextrin (S-NEC-β-CD) bonded phase and 74 on the R equivalent (-NEC) chiral stationary phase (CSP). All compounds are of the type that have four substituents on a stereogenlc center, rather than an "axis of chirality". It is shown that the binary solvent pair used as the mobile phase has a significant Influence on chiral recognition. However, the proportions of the components of a specific pair have little effect. From the results, the Individual contributions to chiral recognition by these CSPs were estimated for 81 different …

2, 6-Di-O-pentyl-3-O-(trifluoroacetyl) (DP-TFA) derivatized β and γ-cyclodextrlne are able to resolve a wide variety of volatile racemic compounds. The enantiomeric recognition mechanism of these phases was Investigated. The retention behavior of homologous series showed that lengthening the side alkyl chain Increases the retention time but does not affect enantioselectivlty. The thermodynamic parameters, free energy, enthalpy, and the difference In free energy, enthalpy, and entropy between enantiomers were evaluated for 24 enantiomeric pairs. From this data, It appears that the compounds can be arranged In two groups. One group has high values for enthalpy, entropy, free energy, and the corresponding difference …

Efficient Simulation Of Multi-Carrier Digital Communication Systems In Nonlinear Channel Environments, K. W. Schneider, William H. Tranter Jan 1992

Efficient Simulation Of Multi-Carrier Digital Communication Systems In Nonlinear Channel Environments, K. W. Schneider, William H. Tranter

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

For systems that contain both frequency division multiplexing and bandpass nonlinearities, the high sampling rate that is necessary for accurate simulation contributes to the long runtimes. A partial sum of products (ParSOP) method is proposed to reduce the sampling rate of such systems. The ParSOP method allows the simulation sampling frequency to be reduced by only generating those intermodulation products that are centered in the bandwidth of the single observed modulated subcarrier. Simulation results, obtained by using the complex power series nonlinear model on a filtered binary phase shift keying system, showed that a reduction in the simulation runtime by …

The Error Probability Of Reed-Solomon Coding And Interleaving On A Bursty-Noise Channel, W. J. Ebel, William H. Tranter Jan 1992

The Error Probability Of Reed-Solomon Coding And Interleaving On A Bursty-Noise Channel, W. J. Ebel, William H. Tranter

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A useful bursty-noise channel model is proposed and, using this model, a binary communication system using Reed-Solomon coding and interleaving is analyzed. The model includes both thermal noise, which gives rise to random errors, and burst noise, which gives rise to error bursts. Error probabilities are derived for the uncoded system, and error probability bounds are derived for the coded system. Monte Carlo simulation results agree well with theory.

1992 Annual Report, Office For The Study Of Aging

Office for the Study of Aging: Alzheimer's Registry

The Statewide Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Registry is a voluntary effort to record specific information about South Carolinians who develop Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. This effort was established in April, 1988, with a $200,000 grant from the American Health Assistance Foundation and matching funds from the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Finance Commission. Supplemental funding was obtained from the Association of Schools of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control. In-kind support was provided from a consortium of public and private agencies. The registry is housed in the Health Sciences Building of the School …
