The Differences In Maternal Stress Levels Between Participants And Non-Participants In Formal Parenteducation Programs, Nancy Jean Tully

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the differences in stress levels of first time mothers of newborn children as measured by The Parenting Stress Index (PSI) (Abidin, 1986). Two groups of mothers were compared. One group of parents were subscribers to the monthly publication, Growing Child, and another group of mothers did not receive any specific instruction regarding child development. The data were gathered in a pretest-posttest format with an approximate interval of six months. Data were analyzed using t-tests and scatterplots. Results showed insignificant differences between pretest to posttest gain scores on the Child Domain, Parent Domain and Total Stress scales of …

Heat Pipe Effect In Porous Medium, Martin Joseph Jan 1992

Heat Pipe Effect In Porous Medium, Martin Joseph

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, a parametric study of the thermal and hydrologic characteristics of the fractured porous tuffs at Yucca Mountain, Nevada was conducted. The effects of different fracture and matrix properties including permeability, thermal conductivity, specific heat, porosity, and tortuosity on heat pipe performance in the vicinity of the waste package were observed. Computer simulations were carried out using TOUGH code on a Cray YMP-2 supercomputer; None of the fracture parameters affected the heat pipe performance except the mobility of the liquid in the fracture. Matrix permeability and thermal conductivity were found to have significant effect on the heat pipe …

The Validity And Reliability Of A 1-Minute Half Sit-Ups Test, Maria Hortensia Diener Jan 1992

The Validity And Reliability Of A 1-Minute Half Sit-Ups Test, Maria Hortensia Diener

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of a 1-minute half sit-up test to allow for its implementation as a test of abdominal strength and endurance. Subjects (N= 133) performed as many sit-ups as they could in one minute. A test-retest reliability study was conducted for two measuring devices, in which subjects performed the sit-ups twice using the same apparatus. An inter-apparatus reliability study between the two apparatus was conducted, in which subjects performed the sit-ups once for each measuring device. Results showed very high test-retest reliability for both measuring devices and high inter-apparatus reliability. …

Impediments To Timely Delivery Of New Products At An Industrial Products Firm, Barry E. King, Richard J. Penlesky Jan 1992

Impediments To Timely Delivery Of New Products At An Industrial Products Firm, Barry E. King, Richard J. Penlesky

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

To identify and discuss sources of delay in the new product development process at an industrial products firm, data were collected during 11 bi-weekly project review meetings at which 42 different projects were discussed. The highest priority projects were designs for a new venture into European markets. It was suggested that manager selection, vendor monitoring, attention to physical engineering design, and bureaucratic checkpoints contribute more to project delays than do most other internal problems such as resource bottlenecks and miscommunications. A challenging trade-off existed between a well-established sign-off procedure and a less-structured but potentially more timely product development policy. In …

Six Adult University Esl Students' Perspectives Of Dialogue Journal Writing: A Multiple Case Study, Vicki L Holmes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

To provide insight into adult university ESL students' perspectives of dialogue journal writing and of their changing views of themselves as writers, a fifteen-week multiple case study was conducted, with student interviews and dialogue journal entries providing the primary sources of data. Grounded in social interactionism and cognitivism, and viewed from the perspectives of the students, this study attempted to add to the growing body of research about dialogue journal writing with speakers of English as a second language; Six ESL students representing five different cultures and ranging in age from 18 to 33 participated in the study. Each participant …

Evaluation Of Gamma Ray Attenuation For Measuring Soil Bulk Density Part I. Laboratory Investigation, Xiwen Luo, Larry G. Wells Jan 1992

Evaluation Of Gamma Ray Attenuation For Measuring Soil Bulk Density Part I. Laboratory Investigation, Xiwen Luo, Larry G. Wells

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Gamma ray attenuation was evaluated as a means of determining soil bulk density. Experiments were conducted using clay, silt, and sandy loam soils wherein samples were compacted to uniform densities at various moisture contents. We determined the attenuation characteristics of dry soil to be independent of soil texture while being significantly different from that of water. Comparison of gamma density measurements with known soil sample densities indicated that the gamma gauge provided reliable measurement of soil bulk density, provided that the effect of soil moisture on attenuation was accounted for and the manufacturer-prescribed calibration procedure was followed daily. Further, we …

Evaluation Of Gamma Ray Attenuation For Measuring Soil Bulk Density Part Ii. Field Investigation, Larry G. Wells, Xiwen Luo Jan 1992

Evaluation Of Gamma Ray Attenuation For Measuring Soil Bulk Density Part Ii. Field Investigation, Larry G. Wells, Xiwen Luo

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A field investigation was conducted at sites near Lexington and Central City, Kentucky, to evaluate the use of gamma ray attenuation for measuring soil bulk density. Experiments were conducted whereby the gamma gauge was calibrated by various means and compared with volumetric cores collected from the field soils. Calibration by the manufacturer’s recommended procedure was determined to be as accurate as more rigorous laboratory calibration or calibration via regression of soil bulk density data, provided that the effect of soil water on gamma attenuation is correctly considered. We also developed a linear regression equation to correct for the occurrence of …

Purification Of Core-Binding Factor, A Protein That Binds The Conserved Core Site In Murine Leukemia Virus Enhancers., Shuwen W. Wang, Nancy A. Speck

Dartmouth Scholarship

The Moloney murine leukemia virus causes thymic leukemias when injected into newborn mice. A major genetic determinant of the thymic disease specificity of the Moloney virus genetically maps to two protein binding sites in the Moloney virus enhancer, the leukemia virus factor b site and the adjacent core site. Point mutations introduced into either of these sites significantly shifts the disease specificity of the Moloney virus from thymic leukemia to erythroleukemia (N. A. Speck, B. Renjifo, E. Golemis, T. Frederickson, J. Hartley, and N. Hopkins, Genes Dev. 4:233-242, 1990). We have purified several polypeptides that bind to the core site …

Predictors Of Success In A Co-Correctional Halfway House: A Discriminant Analysis, Patrick G. Donnelly, Brian E. Forschner Jan 1992

Predictors Of Success In A Co-Correctional Halfway House: A Discriminant Analysis, Patrick G. Donnelly, Brian E. Forschner

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

Considerable research and debate have focused on the effectiveness of community correctional programs. Much of the research does not address the issue of the effectiveness of programs for persons with different types of problems or criminal histories. This article utilizes discriminant analysis to determine the characteristics of persons most likely to succeed in one halfway house. The results indicate that strong socializing and integrating ties in the community and few previous contacts with the criminal justice system are major predictors of success in a halfway house program. The seven discriminators for females are used to accurately predict 87 percent of …

Ademption And The Domain Of Formality In Wills Law, Gregory S. Alexander Jan 1992

Ademption And The Domain Of Formality In Wills Law, Gregory S. Alexander

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The 1990 revision of the Uniform Probate Code ("UPC") marks the second stage of probate reform in the second half of this century. The first stage was the adoption of the original UPC. While it included some changes in the substantive law of wills, its primary objective was to simplify probate procedure. The second stage, by contrast, focuses almost entirely on the substantive law of wills and will substitutes. It changes several of the primary rules of wills law, including the traditional rule requiring strict compliance with execution formalities. It also makes significant changes in the subsidiary rules of wills …

Jurors' Judgments Of Business Liability In Tort Cases: Implications For The Litigation Explosion, Valerie P. Hans, William S. Lofquist Jan 1992

Jurors' Judgments Of Business Liability In Tort Cases: Implications For The Litigation Explosion, Valerie P. Hans, William S. Lofquist

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Criticisms of the civil jury, including charges that the jury is biased against business, have been central to debates over the litigation explosion and demands for tort reform. This article seeks to inform these ongoing controversies by examining tort jurors' accounts of how they reached decisions in cases with business parties. Interviews and questionnaire data showed that jurors were skeptical of plaintiff tort cases against businesses, organized their accounts more on the actions and motivations of plaintiffs than on the responsibilities of business, and spoke often of the litigation crisis and the importance of limiting awards.
