Metaphor And Metonym As Legend In Experience: Magic Does Make Our World Work, Megan Rachael Elliott Jan 1992

Metaphor And Metonym As Legend In Experience: Magic Does Make Our World Work, Megan Rachael Elliott

Honors Capstones

When Sir James Frazer unraveled the intricacies of magic in the early twentieth century/ he defined the sympathetic processes of contagion and homeopathy in magical acts. Almost contemporaneously, Lucien Levy-Bruhl analyzed native thinking in primitive cultures and discovered differences of associative and logical thought. Logical and associative thought processes/ originally thought to be culture dependent and exclusive, are now known to co-exist worldwide. The sympathetic processes of Frazer's magical acts further show themselves to be analogous to associative thinking through metaphoric and metonymic cognition that allows us to negotiate our everyday life. From these associative processes, we also extrapolate an …

Chemical Investigations Of Lagoon Water And Sediments, Sean Paulsen

Honors Capstones

The East Lagoon and Watson Creek on the campus of Northern Illinois University act as catch basins for a number of input sources in the vicinity of DeKalb, Illinois. With "environmentalism" being the catch phrase of the nineties, its is ever increasingly important to know the nature and extent of contamination of water bodies such as these, because of their impact, although indirect, on our society. The water in these areas contains only trace amounts of cadmium, chromium, and lead. However, the sediments contain sizable quantities of these three heavy metals, which in specific parts of the area are considered …

Ethics In Accountancy Education: Should They Be Taught?, Karla L. Short Jan 1992

Ethics In Accountancy Education: Should They Be Taught?, Karla L. Short

Honors Capstones

The research I performed was to come to the conclusion whether or not ethics education should be integrated into the accountancy curriculum. I read several books and magazine articles on the topic, which are introduced in my thesis. Also introduced in the thesis were major studies performed to evaluate the effectiveness of ethics education in business curriculums at several colleges and universities. Based on my research and personal feelings toward the subject, I came to the conclusion that ethics education should be integrated into accounting courses after business principles courses have been completed. My conclusion remained unchanged from before I …

A Seven Year Reaction To The Single Audit Act Of 1984, Douglas M. Haywood Jan 1992

A Seven Year Reaction To The Single Audit Act Of 1984, Douglas M. Haywood

Honors Capstones

The Single Audit Act of 1984 attempted to provide a sense of uniformity amongst governmental audits. It provided strict regulations and procedures the auditor must follow when conducting the audit. Having only one audit provides efficient use of resources, rather than having many audits instituted by each relevant federal agency. The auditors must follow generally accepted governmental auditing standards when performing the audit. Controls and compliance with proper regulations have to be examined to ensure they are being utilized effectively. Reactions from all of the relevant parties have been positive and supportive, so the Single Audit Act should be around …

What Can You Say, Where Can You Say It, And To Whom?: A Guide To Understanding And Preventing Unlawful Sexual Harassment, David Allen Larson Jan 1992

What Can You Say, Where Can You Say It, And To Whom?: A Guide To Understanding And Preventing Unlawful Sexual Harassment, David Allen Larson

Faculty Scholarship

After an increase in visibility for sexual harassment cases in 1991, employers have had to treat allegations of sexual misconduct more seriously now that juries have the authority to award both compensatory and punitive damages. Many employers and employees remain confused, however, as to what conduct is considered unlawful sexual harassment. This article explains how courts have analyzed allegations of unlawful sexual harassment under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by discussing what a court must find before it will impose liability. In response to the very real and immediate demand for a straightforward discussion of the …
