Solvent Extraction Reagent Entrainment Effects On Zinc Electrowinning From Waste Oxide Leach Solutions, M. Neira, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Johh L. Watson
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A considerable quantity of metal-containing waste oxide is generated by the primary metal industry, and under increased environmental regulation, treatment of these wastes has become viable. Hydrometallurgical processing is often appropriate and one potential treatment process for zinc oxide wastes involves leaching the oxide with an acid, purifying by a solvent extraction operation, and recovering metallic zinc by electrowinning the purified leach solution. The purification stage is frequently critical and the introduction of a solvent extraction organic reagent into the flowsheet can be detrimental to downstream processes. The object of this study was to determine the effect of organics, entrained …

p-type perovskite-type oxides are candidates for use as components of high temperature fuel cells and as oxygen separation membranes. The particular properties that these applications require are reviewed. The characteristics that these oxides have which allow them to satisfy many of these requirements are discussed and a defect model presented. The status of the utilization of these oxides and of the areas which need to be addressed such as thermal expansion and sintering characteristics are reviewed. © 1992.

Seasonal Phytoplankton Development Within Three Rivers In The Lower Chesapeake Bay Region, Harold G. Marshall, Lewis F. Affronti
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The seasonal and inter-annual concentrations of phytoplankton were studied over a 50 month period in the lower James, York and Rappahannock Rivers (USA). Differences in the onset, duration and magnitude of major seasonal growth periods varied from year to year. There was a tendency for spring, summer and fall maxima, with a winter period of reduced abundance. An additional study of picoplankton over a 12 month period indicated greatest abundance during summer and fall, with least development in winter.

Coperite-Computer-Aided Tool For Power Engineering Research, Instruction, Training And Education, Badrul H. Chowdhury, D. E. Clark
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A graphics-oriented, primarily PC-based tool for education, research, and training in power engineering is introduced. The tool, called COPERITE, has all user interfaces resident on an IBM-386 microcomputer. Menus and windows are used for the interface, and attractive graphical representations and displays are included. Application programs that are interfaced are power flow, contingency analysis, economic dispatch, security-constrained dispatch, system stability, and fault analysis. These programs are executed on a VAX 8800 computer mainly for speed of execution. Information exchange between the PC and the VAX is made through an Ethernet connection which is transparent to the user. Results of execution …
Derivation And Testing Of Tenets Of A Theory Of Social Organizations As Adaptive Systems, Louette R. Johnson Lutjens
Derivation And Testing Of Tenets Of A Theory Of Social Organizations As Adaptive Systems, Louette R. Johnson Lutjens

Management and organizational theories are commonly used to design nursing administration studies. This article proposes a nursing theory as a viable alternative and demonstrates its utility in the conduct of nursing administration research. The purpose of the research was to determine the explanatory power of the environmental stimuli of medical condition, nursing condition, nursing intensity, and medical severity on length-of-stay (LOS). Twenty-three percent of the variance in LOS was accounted for by the environmental stimuli with nursing acuity contributing 14%. The focal stimulus, medical condition (diagnosis-related groups), uniquely explained only one percent of the variance. The theory of social organizations …
Perceptions Of Managers' And Hourly Employees' Job Satisfaction Resulting From Human Resource Development Training, Larry Everett Helphinstine
Perceptions Of Managers' And Hourly Employees' Job Satisfaction Resulting From Human Resource Development Training, Larry Everett Helphinstine
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Companies have realized the importance of investing in human capital in today's competitive workplace. Human resource development (HRD) programs have been implemented to meet this need. One component of an HRD program is training. One goal of HRD training is an increased level of employee job satisfaction. The study focused on two different problems in training. One problem was to determine if there were differences in perceptions of job satisfaction of managers who received HRD training as compared to managers who did not receive HRD training. A second problem of this study was to determine if there were differences in …

Spectra of energetic protons and deuterons emitted following negative muon capture from rest in 3He have been measured for the first time. Significant capture strength is observed at high energy transfers (mμ- Ev >60 MeV) for the two-body and three-body breakup channels, indicative of the importance of nucleon-nucleon correlations and meson exchange currents in the capture process. A simple plane wave impulse approximation calculation reproduces the proton spectrum reasonably well, but underpredicts the deuteron rate at the highest energies by a large factor.

In fairy tales, villains usually come to a bad end, snared in a trap of their own making, or visited with a disaster nicely suited to their particular villainy. Read a story of this kind to children and you will be struck by the profound satisfaction with which this predictable of events is greeted. Yet, if children cheer when the villain is done in, they are just as satisfied when the hero manages to get the villain by the throat but takes pity and spares him. These tales of retribution and mercy, even reduced to their barest bones, seem to …

Abstract Principle V. Contextual Conceptions Of Harm: A Comment On R. V. Butler, Jamie Cameron

This comment provides a critique of the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in R. v. Butler, which held that section 163(8) of the Criminal Code, defining obscenity, is a reasonable limit on freedom of expression under section 1 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Before discussing the Charter, the Court expanded the scope of section 163(8) to include a prohibition against sexually explicit material that is degrading or dehumanizing. Initially, the author is critical of the Court's methodology, which enlarged section 163(8) at the expense of expressive freedom, without even mentioning the Charter. Once the Court had interpreted …

Original Intent V. Revisionism: The Great Constitutional Debate, Eric Barnes
Original Intent V. Revisionism: The Great Constitutional Debate, Eric Barnes
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
The due process clause is one of the many battlegrounds upon which two diametrically opposed camps of judicial decision makers fight out their rulings-rulings which effect the mass of citizenry and the balance of power in America's constitutional system. These opposing camps are the originalists and revisionists.
Era And The Bill Of Rights, Teresa Haddock
Era And The Bill Of Rights, Teresa Haddock
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) proposed by Congress on 22 March 1972 would have become valid if ratified by three-fourths of the states within a seven year period from the date of submission. Thirty-five of the required thirty-eight states ratified the amendment. Before the time expired, Idaho, Nebraska, Tennessee, Kentucky, and South Dakota had all attempted to rescind their ratifications, but were denied the option to change their vote. Also, in October of 1978, Congress decided to extend the seven-year period until 30 June 1982. Four members of the Idaho legislature brought suit in Idaho vs. Freeman. The plaintiffs argument …
Paternal Effects On Offspring Quality In Campsis Radicans, Robert I. Bertin, P. J. Peters
Paternal Effects On Offspring Quality In Campsis Radicans, Robert I. Bertin, P. J. Peters
Biology Department Faculty Scholarship
Investigated paternal effects on seedling performance in relation to patterns of fruit abortion using a series of experiments with various combinations of pollen donors and recipients. In eight of 14 experiments significant paternal effects on three or four dependent performance variables were detected. In six of the eight experiments with significant results the favored pollen recipient sired the more vigorous offspring. In general, therefore, patterns of fruit abortion with respect to outcross donor enhance progeny fitness. -from Authors

Documentation For Economics 210 And 330, Elizabeth R. Da Costa
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
For my internship project for the M.S. degree in Economics, I propose to teach the courses Economics 210 and Economics 330 at Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio, during the Winter Quarter, 1992. As it is necessary for Dr. Peter Iwomi, Acting Chairperson for the Department of Economics, to be away from the campus during the first four weeks of the quarter, I have been hired to teach those two Economics courses in his absence. Upon Dr. Iwomi's return, I shall continue teaching the Economics 210, Microeconomics course, but will assist with the Economics 330, Intermediate Microeconomics course, as necessary.
Getting Domestic Technology Transfer On Track, Donovan O'Neil Robinson
Getting Domestic Technology Transfer On Track, Donovan O'Neil Robinson
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
The confluence of the recession and end of the Cold War has brought the issue of technology transfer to the forefront of national debate. Each of these significant events is challenging by itself but together they are greater than the sum of the parts. At the center of technology transfer debate is the U.S. laboratory system. A de-emphasis on defense related R&D coupled with a move toward commercial applications is the predominant policy choice to strengthen America’s international competitiveness. This paper examines technology transfer from the Department of Energy to the private sector as reported in "Fossil Energy: From Laboratory …
