Germany's Pivotal Role In The Construction Of A Common European House, John P Wallin Jan 1992

Germany's Pivotal Role In The Construction Of A Common European House, John P Wallin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the wake of the bipolar order, a political and strategic reconfiguration of Europe is necessary that reflects the current international atmosphere. Germany's reunification has prompted a reappraisal of that country's economic, political, and security role in Europe. Germany is a central element to any new European order due to its geography, economic and political clout, and its unique historical position between East and West; In light of recent changes, the relevance of neofunctional integration theory has been revived. The intergovernmental conferences at Maastricht on economic and political union demonstrate that functional and political "spill-over" are complemented by cultivated "spill-over"--the …

The Recurring Appeals Of The Mormon Rhetorical Vision, Arthur Thomas Challis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigates the recurring appeals of the Mormon rhetorical vision, appeals that help account for the growth of the Mormon Church which is now eight million; Bormann's Fantasy Theme Analysis, a communication model that explains how small groups develop imaginative ideas and concepts called fantasy themes that form rhetorical visions and chain out to society, is the overall methodology used in investigating the Mormon vision, while Fisher's narrative fidelity and coherence, and Rieke and Sillars' American Value Systems are used as procedural enhancements to Bormann's model; This rhetorical vision displays fidelity with three American value systems while partaking in …

The Structure, Conduct, And Performance Of Nevada's Slot Route Industry, Benedict Dell'orto Jan 1992

The Structure, Conduct, And Performance Of Nevada's Slot Route Industry, Benedict Dell'orto

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The four largest firms in the Nevada slot route industry control over 70 percent of the industry. Its structure was shown to be highly concentrated using the Herfindahl-Herschman index; The individual slot route operators appear to conduct themselves in a non-competitive manner by differentiating their respective products. Each firm in the industry established their own niche either through product or service differentiation; Firms in concentrated industries tend to earn monopoly profits. Yet, using Tobin's q and Jensen's coefficient, we show that Nevada's slot route firms did not earn excess profits, despite the high degree of industrial concentration; The presence of …

Sampling The Inner Experience Of Bulimic And Other Individuals, Stephanie Anne Doucette Jan 1992

Sampling The Inner Experience Of Bulimic And Other Individuals, Stephanie Anne Doucette

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the inner experience of five bulimic subjects, ages 18 to 56 years, using the descriptive experience sampling method (Hurlburt, 1990). Subjects were signaled at random intervals by a programmed beeping device, asked to "freeze" any inner events, such as thoughts, images, or feelings, at the moment of the beep, and to record this experience in a notebook. Subjects met with investigators within 24 hours to discuss each sampled moment in detail. Investigators then examined subjects' descriptions for emerging salient characteristics. All bulimic subjects reported multiple inner events ongoing simultaneously, a characteristic seldom found, using this method, among …

Comparison Of Three Scoring Procedures Within Context-Dependent Item Sets, Pamela Ann Henderson Jan 1992

Comparison Of Three Scoring Procedures Within Context-Dependent Item Sets, Pamela Ann Henderson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

It has been theorized and evidenced that traditional reliabilities calculated on tests consisting of context-dependent item sets yield inflated estimates. However, the degree of inflated reliability for different scoring techniques has not been observed. This study scored three context-dependent item sets as stand-alone items and as separate item sets using three different scoring techniques; number-right, polyweighting and the three-parameter IRT logistic model. Differences in reliability estimates for the stand-alone and item set treatment were determined for each scoring procedure and compared. These three scoring procedures were also compared to determine which procedure yielded the highest reliability and validity estimates and …

Frail Parents, Robust Duties, Hilde Lindemann Nelson Jan 1992

Frail Parents, Robust Duties, Hilde Lindemann Nelson

Utah Law Review

The American College of Emergency Physicians recently reported that as many as 100,000 to 200,000 geriatric patients are abandoned each year in emergency rooms across the country. At San Francisco General Hospital alone, three to four such patients are abandoned each week, often suffering from dementia or other ailments that impose serious burdens on their families. As the human life span is extended in postindustrial societies, those who used to die now grow old and often infirm, yet the younger population, the prop and mainstay of old age, is shrinking proportionately. Care for the aged has begun to be a …

A volunteer sample included five female teachers who taught in different high risk schools within the same school district. Five research questions guided the study: (1) What are teachers' beliefs about instructing young at-risk children to read and write? (2) What do teachers say they do as they instruct young at-risk children to read and write? (3) What do teachers actually do as they instruct young at-risk children to read and write? (4) What influences teachers' instructional decisions …

Identity And Community Through Sport Boosterism, Tim Delaney Jan 1992

Identity And Community Through Sport Boosterism, Tim Delaney

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

American society of the 1990's is characterized by a high degree of fragmentation, geographic mobility and general feelings of a dramatically changing social world. For various reasons, every year many people move from their birth homes, leaving behind established affiliations and networks. Consequently, they may find it difficult to develop a sense of identity of community. Today, sports, via fan association or "booster clubs," may serve as the vehicle for identity maintenance and transition into a new community. The effects of joining a sports booster group is examined by using questionnaire data from a survey conducted on members of the …

Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, And Paleotectonic Setting Of The Gazelle Formation, Eastern Klamath Mountains, Northern California, David William Trabert

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Gazelle Formation crops out over an area of 22 x 8 kilometers with a stratigraphic thickness of at least 1.25 kilometers. The Gazelle consists of shale, siltstone, siliceous mudstone, volcaniclastic sandstone, and chert-rich flysch, in decreasing order of abundance. Sediment gravity flows were the dominant sedimentary process during deposition of the Gazelle Formation. Petrographic analysis of sandstones from the Gazelle reveal that these strata were derived from both magmatic arc and subduction complex sources. These petrographic data are consistent with regional geological relationships indicating that the Gazelle Formation was deposited in some portion of an arc-trench system; The sedimentological, …

Marital Assessment From The Clients' Perspective Using The Couple's Pre-Counseling Inventory: A Comparison Of Mormon Couples With The Normative Sample, Stephen N Tracy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated whether the scores of Mormons (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) differed from the validity results of the Couple's Pre-Counseling Inventory revised (Stuart & Jacobson, 1987). Significant differences were found between the validity study and responses from the subjects suggesting these (differences) are crucial areas to consider when dealing with Mormon couples. The importance for therapists and researchers to consider and employ client's values as a part of therapeutic endeavors is discussed. A client's specific values are proffered as identifying them as part of a subculture (e.g. members of a church) as …

The Validity Of Perceived Physical Fitness In Adult Men And Women, Patricia Anne Mortati Mccollum Jan 1992

The Validity Of Perceived Physical Fitness In Adult Men And Women, Patricia Anne Mortati Mccollum

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the perception of personal physical fitness in adult men and women by comparing a Perceived Physical Fitness Index (PPFI) with a composite index of measured fitness. Subjects were 106 volunteer adults 36-55 years of age. They completed the PPFI (a 7-point Likert-type scale) and were then assessed for body composition, cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. A composite fitness score was compared with their PPFI score. Perceived fitness was significantly different than actual fitness (F (1,100) = 31.3, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.001) and there was a significant gender difference (F (1,100) = 13.56, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.001). However, a significant interaction (F (1,100) = 21.88, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.0001) indicated that the difference between perceived and actual fitness was not consistent for males and females. Further analysis revealed that females were able to estimate their fitness level more accurately than males. The results indicate that perceived fitness is a valid indicator of actual fitness for women but not for men.
