Solidification And Morphology Of Submarine Lavas: A Dependence On Extrusion Rate, Ross W. Griffiths, Jonathan H. Fink

The results of recent laboratory experiments with wax extruded beneath relatively cold water may be extrapolated to predict the surface morphology of submarine lavas as a function of the extrusion rate and melt vIscosity. The experiments with solidifying wax indicated that the surface morphology was controlled by a single parameter, the ratio of the time taken for the surface to solidify, and a time scale for lateral flow. For submarine basalts a solution of the cooling problem (which is dominated by conduction in the lava but convective heat transfer in the water) and estimates of lava viscosities place this parameter …

The Effects Of Rapid Heating And Cooling On The Composition, Structure, And Superconducting Properties Of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O Compounds, Qing Duan

Bulk and thin film samples of Bi₂₋[subscript x]Pb[subscript x]Sr₂Ca₂Cu₃O[subscript y] compounds were prepared by suitable methods. The thin film and bulk samples were exposed to argon gas at temperatures of about 2000 °C and pressures of about 300 atm. in a ballistic compressor (BC) and then cooled at a rate of about 10⁵ °C/sec. The samples before and after this treatment were examined and compared using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) , and an x-ray diffractometer (XRD). The Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) are currently involved in a program to implement solar electric (photovoltaic) powered applications in the transportation sector. The objective of the program is to encourage the widespread use of cost-effective, transportation related, photovoltaic-powered systems in all areas of traffic control.

Transportation departments have generally relied on conventional practices of using generators, primary batteries, and extensions of utility grid to fulfil their power needs. There exist many remote and conventional electric power requirements within the FDOT that may be effectively satisfied by photovoltaic (PV) power. Applications ranging from …

Bacterial Numbers And Activity, Microalgal Biomass And Productivity, And Meiofaunal Distribution In Sediments Naturally Contaminated With Biogenic Bromophenols, Charles C. Steward, James L. Pinckney, Yvette Piceno, Charles R. Lovell

Sediment cores were collected inside and outside of a bed of a bromophenol-producing marine polychaete, Notomastus lobatus, and examined for impact of the bromophenols on sediment microflora and meiofauna around N. lobatus burrows. No significant differences were found between microbial parameters measured inside and outside of the N. lobatus bed. Integrated 6 cm cores taken adjacent to N. lobatus burrows contained 1.2 x 10⁹ bacteria ml^-1. Cell numbers were similar at control sites within the bed, but away from burrows, and not significantly different from cell numbers (1.0 X 10⁹ cells ml^-1) at a …
