Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In standard Mott electron polarimetry using thin gold film targets, extrapolation procedures must be used to reduce the experimentally measured asymmetries A to the values they would have for scattering from single atoms. These extrapolations involve the dependence of A on either the gold film thickness t or the maximum detected electron energy loss in the target ΔE. Using a concentric cylindrical-electrode Mott polarimeter, we have studied and compared these two types of extrapolations over the electron energy range 20-100 keV. The potential systematic errors which can result from such procedures are analyzed in detail, particularly with regard to the …

Arts Administration Master's Reports (1984-2016)
Stephen Weil writes in his collection of essays, Rethinking the Museum and Other Meditations," .. we must never forget that ideas--and not just things alone--also lie at the heart of the museum enterprise. Reality is neither objects alone nor simply ideas about objects (2). Weil's insight into the matter of museums prompted me to search out a particular type of organization in which to work for this internship. No doubt any number of respected and successful institutions in New York City could have offered me an extraordinary internship in arts administration, but I was drawn to The New Museum of …

Solution To A Multicriteria Aircraft Routing Problem Utilizing Parallel Search Techniques, James J. Grimm Iii
Solution To A Multicriteria Aircraft Routing Problem Utilizing Parallel Search Techniques, James J. Grimm Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Pilots select routes based on factors such as threats, fuel, time on target, distance, and refueling points. This is a time consuming task. This thesis presents the software engineering synthesis of a software tool, based on a parallelized A* search algorithm, to select routes. For simplicity only threats and distance are used. A centralized open list is used with one processor managing the list while the other processors perform the node expansions. This decomposition result in a dynamically load balanced system. A number of parameters are changed to study their impact on the execution time. The use of a branch …
An Analytical And Experimental Investigation Of Fm-By-Noise Jamming, Charles J. Daly
An Analytical And Experimental Investigation Of Fm-By-Noise Jamming, Charles J. Daly
Theses and Dissertations
Among the jamming waveforms used in Electronic Warfare, FM-by-noise is the least understood, and no exhaustive analytical and experimental investigation of the subject exists. This investigation presents a thorough review, consolidation, and elucidation of the theory of FM-by-noise. To explain and predict the behavior of FM-by-noise at RF and IF, three useful ratios, namely the deviation-to-victim ratio, the noise-to-victim ratio, and the sweep- to-victim ratio, are developed. To complement the theory, results of FM-by-noise jamming experiments conducted using commercial test and measurement equipment are presented. Specifically, the time- and frequency-domain behavior of FM-by- noise at RF and IF is studied …

The Coordinated Federal Lands Highways Technology Improvement Program (CTIP) was developed with the purpose of serving the immediate needs of those who design and construct Federal Lands Highways, including Indian Reservation roads, National Park roads and parkways, and forest highways. A wide assortment of guardrails, bridge rails and transitions are being used on roads under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service and other Federal agencies. These guardrails, bridge rails and transitions are intended to blend in with the roadside in order to preserve the visual integrity of the parks and parkways. However, many of them have never been crash …

This work is currently utilized by a number of AFIT synthetic environment applications for use during a SIMNET exercise. An extensive review of distributed interactive simulations is presented. A discussion of the current distributed simulation protocol, SIMNET, is presented along with the future protocol standard, DIS. Finally, a brief discussion on dead reckoning and its importance during an exercise is presented. An analysis of the SIMNET and DIS protocols provided the basis for the creation of a series of …
A Survey Of A Number Of Megalithic Grave Complexes In Tamil Nadu, South India, David K. Mcconkey
A Survey Of A Number Of Megalithic Grave Complexes In Tamil Nadu, South India, David K. Mcconkey
Masters Theses
This study compares and contrasts a number of Megalithic cemeteries from South India. The project involved the mapping of a number of cemeteries from the Lower Moyar Shelf. I then compared and contrasted them to the cemeteries of the upper Nilgiris.
Some have suggested that these two regions had very limited contact with one another. From the evidence that I have gathered I now believe that they were wrong. There is a strong continuity in grave types between the lower regions and the upper Nilgiris, which I believe demonstrates some degree of contact. I also believe that based on the …

Open And Filled Hole Static Tensile Strength Characterization Of Metal Matrix Composite Scs-9/Β21s, Jacob T. Roush
Open And Filled Hole Static Tensile Strength Characterization Of Metal Matrix Composite Scs-9/Β21s, Jacob T. Roush
Theses and Dissertations
SCS-9/β21s has a reduced gauge thickness, in comparison with other metal matrix composites, due to a smaller diameter fiber. This reduced gauge thickness makes it an attractive candidate for the skin of hypersonic vehicles. Tensile testing of (0/90)2s and (O/±45/90)s laminates was performed at room temperature, 482°C, and 650°C. Both notched and unnotched specimens were tested. Notched specimens, open and filled hole, had a width-to-diameter ratio of six. Materials 7075-T6 and Mar-m-246 were used as pins in the filled hole tensile testing. Analytical work was completed to predict material properties, elastic and plastic stress concentration factors, residual stresses, …
An Investigation Of Discovery-Based Learning In The Route Planning Domain, Freeman A. Kilpatrick Jr.
An Investigation Of Discovery-Based Learning In The Route Planning Domain, Freeman A. Kilpatrick Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents MAVERICK, a Discovery-Based learning (DBL) system designed to learn maneuvers in the route planning domain. DBL was originally designed to learn in domains for which little domain knowledge exists. This thesis proposes using it in domains for which knowledge exists, but the acquisition of this knowledge is difficult or time-consuming because of the knowledge acquisition bottleneck. The operation of the DBL process in MAVERICK was investigated to determine the potential utility of such a system to a real- world Air Force problem in the domain of aircraft route planning. MAVERICK worked well in its limited domain, and …
Design And Characterization Of Optically Pumped Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers, Richard J. Bagnell
Design And Characterization Of Optically Pumped Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers, Richard J. Bagnell
Theses and Dissertations
Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are a form of semiconductor laser which have their cavity oriented orthogonally to the plane of the wafer. The orientation necessitates short cavities, highly reflective mirrors and a relatively high gain/loss ratio. Even so, the resultant superior exit beam characteristics and the tight packing density of the finished lasers provide strong motivation for pursuing the growth of these structures. This thesis details the design of an optically pumped InGaAs multiple quantum well periodic gain structure VCSEL with a 950 nm lasing wavelength. These growths were to be a first attempt at VCSEL construction, so …
Sectionalism And The Representation Debate, 1787-1792, John E. Grenier
Sectionalism And The Representation Debate, 1787-1792, John E. Grenier
Theses and Dissertations
From 1787 until 1792 the issue of the apportionment of representatives in the House of Representatives was the focus of spirited debate in American politics. The central issue at stake was the size and influence of each of the sections in future Congresses. The representation issue was first debated during the Constitutional Convention in 1787. After a temporary settlement of the representation guestion in the Convention, the First Congress re-opened the apportionment debate. The result was a constitutional amendment that would have significantly increased the size of the House of Representatives. After that amendment failed to pass the states, the …
