Anaximander And The Architects, Robert Hahn Dec 1992

Anaximander And The Architects, Robert Hahn

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

This essay is divided into several sections. In (B) I set out the problem of making a diagram or model of Anaximander's cosmos, then in (C) I outline the relevant fragments and testimony - for Anaximander's picture of the cosmos and its formation — from which a diagram or model might be constructed. Next, in (D) I invite the reader to reflect on the differences between plan and elevation perspectives: two ways of Imagining. In (D.l), evidence for plan and elevation perspectives in ancient Egyptian architecture is examined, and the contributing influence is considered; in (D.2) evidence for plan and …

Mushroom Consumption (Mycophagy) By North American Cervids, Karen L. Launchbaugh, Philip J. Urness Dec 1992

Mushroom Consumption (Mycophagy) By North American Cervids, Karen L. Launchbaugh, Philip J. Urness

Great Basin Naturalist

Native mushrooms play an important, though often underestimated, role in deer, elk, and caribou diets in North America. Mushrooms are often noted as an unusual or anomalous food in the diets of cervids; yet they often dominate diets in the late summer and fall in forested areas of western North America and throughout the year in the southeastern U.S. Mushrooms are particularly high in protein (16–19%), phosphorus (average 0.75%), and potassium (average 2%). Also, mushroom production is generally greatest in fall. Therefore, they are a highly nutritious food in late season when other native forages may marginally meet basal nutrient …

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers And The "Curse Of Doug Williams", Richard C. Crepeau Dec 1992

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers And The "Curse Of Doug Williams", Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

With the end of the National Football League's regular season, we have come to the end of another season of despair for the Tampa Bay Bucs. New levels of futility were achieved as the Bucs turned in their tenth consecutive season in which they have lost at least ten games. And the Bucs don't just lose, they lose in new and creative ways. This is a team of legendary incompetence, whose poor performance over a sustained period of time is earning them a special place in the history of the NFL.

Present Developments In Image Analysis, Peter Smart, Xiaoling Leng

Scanning Microscopy

The paper discusses novel methods of analysing oriented textures, explains some of the problems which had to be overcome to make these methods work, and indicates where future developments might be expected. This has required improvements in the methods of intensity gradient analysis, the development of large filter methods for mapping features defined in terms of their texture, and the introduction of ideas from the theory of regionalised variables.

Reasonable Attorney's Fees. Dec 1992

Reasonable Attorney's Fees.

Initiatives

REASONABLE ATTORNEY FEES. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Measure provides that the prevailing party in all civil law cases shall, as part of the judgment, be awarded reasonable attorney fees. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local governments: The net fiscal impact is unknown. The payment of attorney's fees would result in state and local costs in cases lost and savings in cases won. It would affect the behavior of people, resulting in an unknown change in the number of civil cases filed, the number settled versus those tried, and the types of …

Electron Beam Lithography For Large Area Patterning 3: Data Conversion And Electron Beam Deflection Control, Susumu Hoshinouchi, Hiroaki Tobuse, Hidenobu Murakami, Ryuichi Shimizu Dec 1992

Electron Beam Lithography For Large Area Patterning 3: Data Conversion And Electron Beam Deflection Control, Susumu Hoshinouchi, Hiroaki Tobuse, Hidenobu Murakami, Ryuichi Shimizu

Scanning Microscopy

Electron beam direct writing technologies, specifically for the large area patterning of electronic devices such as printed wiring boards, are studied in this paper. The vector scanning method with two kinds of beam deflection, main-deflection and sub-deflection, has been adopted for the fabrication of circuit patterns of various line widths. The sub-deflection of high frequency oscillation is superimposed on the main-deflection, which allows for controlling each line width with ease. A data conversion and a deflection control system with several strategies have been developed to reduce the conversion time and the volume of output data. It is revealed that circuit …

Foundationalism, Coherentism, And Aristotle, Robin A. Smith Dec 1992

Foundationalism, Coherentism, And Aristotle, Robin A. Smith

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

It is the need to respond to various forms of relativism, with their nihilistic consequences for philosophy and science, that was the primary epistemological goal for Plato and Aristotle. Such a goal is a far more credible and a far more urgent one for them than the refutation of Cartesian radical skepticism, a position they do not even seem to take seriously.

Denitrification And Oxygen Consumption In Sediments Of Two South Texas Estuaries, Won Bae Yoon, Ronald Benner

Faculty Publications

Spatial and temporal variations in rates of denitrification and oxygen consumption were measured in sediments of the Nueces and Guadalupe Estuaries in southern Texas, USA. Denitrification rates varied from 4.0 to 71.1 µmol N2 m-2 h-1 in the Nueces Estuary and from 4.6 to 34.7 µmol N2 m-2 h-1 in the Guadalupe Estuary. Denitrification accounted for 29 to 80% of total benthic N flux in the study areas. Oxygen consumption rates ranged from 176 to 818 µmol O2 m-2 h-1 in Nueces Estuary and from 208 to 550 µmol O2 …

X-Ray Microanalysis Of Epithelial And Secretory Cells In Culture, Anne Von Euler, Eva Pålsgård, Christina Vult Von Steyern, Godfried M. Roomans

Scanning Microscopy

Cell cultures can be used to study ion transport processes. X-ray microanalysis of cell cultures at the cellular level gives interesting information that can complement electrophysiological and tracer studies. In this paper, methods for culturing and preparing a variety of epithelial and secretory cells (fibroblasts, insulinoma cells, bovine mammary epithelial cells, colon cancer cells) for X-ray microanalysis are presented. Results show that sometimes cell cultures are not homogeneous with respect to ion content or reaction to physiological stimuli. In colon cancer cell cultures, a "high K" and a "low K" cell subpopulation was found; these subpopulations also differed with respect …

Roost Sites Used By Sandhill Crane Staging Along The Platte River, Nebraska, Bradley S. Norling, Stanley H. Anderson, Wayne A. Hubert Dec 1992

Roost Sites Used By Sandhill Crane Staging Along The Platte River, Nebraska, Bradley S. Norling, Stanley H. Anderson, Wayne A. Hubert

Great Basin Naturalist

We assessed the influence of water depth, extent of unobstructed view, and human disturbance features on use of roost sites by Sandhill Cranes along the Platte River, Nebraska, during spring migratory stopover. Aerial photos taken near dawn were used to determine areas of flock use and habitat availability in four sample reaches, and measurements were made on the ground at flock roost areas. In general, depths of 1–13 cm were used by sandhill cranes in greater proportion than those available. Exposed sandbars and depths >20 cm were avoided, while depths of 14–19 cm were used in proportion to their availability. …

Condition Models For Wintering Northern Pintails In The Southern High Plains, Loren M. Smith, Douglas G. Sheeley, David B. Wester Dec 1992

Condition Models For Wintering Northern Pintails In The Southern High Plains, Loren M. Smith, Douglas G. Sheeley, David B. Wester

Great Basin Naturalist

Three condition models for wintering Northern Pintails (Anas acuta) were tested for their ability to predict fat mass, logarithm of fat mass, or a condition index (CI) incorporating fat mass. Equations generated to predict fat mass and the logarithm of fat mass accounted for more than 69% of the variation in these dependent variables. Log transformations of body mass, wing length, and total length explained at least 60% of the variation in CI. All models performed better on an independent data set. Mean prediction error was minimal (≤8% of measured variables) and negative for all models. Regression models …

Ecology And Management Of Medusahead (Taeniatherum Caput-Medusae Ssp. Asperum Melderis), James A. Young Dec 1992

Ecology And Management Of Medusahead (Taeniatherum Caput-Medusae Ssp. Asperum Melderis), James A. Young

Great Basin Naturalist

Medusahead is another in the extensive list of annual herbaceous species to invade the temperate desert rangelands of the Great Basin. Medusahead is not preferred by large herbivores and apparently is not preferred by granivores. Herbage of this annual grass enhances ignition and spread of wildfires. Medusahead is highly competitive with the seedlings of native species and is probably the greatest threat to the biodiversity of the natural vegetation that has yet been accidentally introduced into the Great Basin. Despite the obvious biological disruptions that are associated with medusahead invasion, the species offers a wealth of opportunities for students to …

An Application-Oriented Approach To Distributed Error-Detecting Branch & Bound, Aggie Y. Sun, Hanan Lutfiyya, Bruce Mcmillin Dec 1992

An Application-Oriented Approach To Distributed Error-Detecting Branch & Bound, Aggie Y. Sun, Hanan Lutfiyya, Bruce Mcmillin

Computer Science Technical Reports

An important aspect which is often overlooked in software _design of distributed environments is that of fault tolerance. Many methodologies in the past have attempted to provide fault tolerance efficiently, but have never been successful at eliminating explicit time and space redundancy. One approach is the Application-Oriented Fault Tolerance Paradigm, which provides fault tolerance by examining the behavior and properties of the application and deriving executable assertions for the detection of faults. Previous work has demonstrated the feasibility of the application-oriented fault tolerance paradigm for various applications. However, the executable assertions were guided by the natural constraints of the problem. …

Fuzzy Logic Applied To Adaptive Kalman Filtering, Marlys Rae Remus Dec 1992

Fuzzy Logic Applied To Adaptive Kalman Filtering, Marlys Rae Remus

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Kalman filter provides an effective means of estimating the state of a system from noisy measurements given that the system parameters are completely specified. The innovations sequence for a properly specified Kalman filter will be a zero-mean white noise process. However, when the system parameters change with time the Kalman filter will need to be adapted to compensate for the changes. Traditionally this has been accomplished by using nonlinear filtering, parallel Kalman filtering and covariance matching techniques. These methods have produced good results at the expense of large amounts of computational time. Necessary changes in the system parameters become …
