An Analysis Of Substance Abusers' Field Dependence & Time Spent In Rehabilitative Therapy, Robert Fane
An Analysis Of Substance Abusers' Field Dependence & Time Spent In Rehabilitative Therapy, Robert Fane
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This project was designed to determine if significant differences existed between the level of psychological differentiation, as determined by the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT), of individuals entering a treatment center for chemical dependency and the length of stay at the facility.
The subjects consisted of 43 white males who were seeking treatment for addiction to mood altering chemicals at a regional treatment facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Each subject was interviewed to collect pertinent background information pertaining to past substance abuse and was evaluated to determine psychological differentiation, utilizing the GEFT.
It was determined through an analysis of variance …

Soils with a history of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) treatment at field application rates and control soils with no prior exposure to 2,4-D were amended with 2,4-D in the laboratory. Before and during these treatments, the populations of 2,4-D-degrading bacteria were monitored by most-probable-number (MPN) enumeration and hybridization analyses, using probes for the tfd genes of plasmid pJP4, which encode enzymes for 2,4-D degradation. Data obtained by these alternate methods were compared. Several months after the most recent field application of 2,4-D (approximately 1 ppm), soils with a 42-year history of 2,4-D treatment did not have significantly higher numbers of 2,4-D-degrading …

Senior Engineering Design Conference
The 10th Conference on Senior Engineering Design Projects was held on December 8, 1992 at the College of Engineering and applied Sciences on the Parkview Campus of Western Michigan University. The college sponsors the conference to showcase the work of its graduating seniors, who are required to complete a capstone project that puts into practice what they have learned. Many of the projects are sponsored by business and industry.

Documentary Perspective Of Bibliotherapy In Education, Johnson A. Afolayan
Documentary Perspective Of Bibliotherapy In Education, Johnson A. Afolayan
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Implemented correctly, bibliotherapy may prove one of the better techniques in dealing with emotional conflicts among children and adolescents, as research reminds us that periods of development are critically contingent upon self-concepts and how individuals believe they are perceived by significant others. Because many individuals (children and adolescents) are reluctant to verbalize emotions such as fear, rejection, and depression openly, carefully selected books allow these individuals to understand themselves better, learn from the experiences of others and contemplate possible solutions to problems (Schrank, 1982). The purpose of this article is to provide knowledge and understanding of the history, concept and …

Oral Language, Literacy And Schooling: Kindergarten Years, Karen F. Thomas, Steven D. Rinehart, Sherrie K. Wampler
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This article reports the findings from the second year of a three year study following four children from a prekindergarten Headstart program through first grade. Grounded in the developmental theories of Vygotsky (1986), who has asserted the importance of social interaction and language learning, and Halliday (1975), who has provided a sociolinguistic framework for children learning language in social functions that promote meaning in their lives, it is an attempt to document the impact of oral language on young children's reading and writing. In the initial year of this study, we identified four children who demonstrated varying levels of Halliday's …

The Multidimensional Reading Instruction Observation Scale, Patrick P. Mccabe
The Multidimensional Reading Instruction Observation Scale, Patrick P. Mccabe
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The Multidimensional Reading Instruction Observation Scale is a formative evaluative instrument which can be used to judge the quality of reading instruction by recording the nature of the interaction between the student and the teacher along three dimensions critical to quality instruction: cognitive processes, affective processes, and management skills. Cognitive processes are those behaviors which are directed toward acquiring strategies or skills (to improve reading). Affective processes are those behaviors which influence the self-concept of the learner. Management skills are those behaviors which demonstrate ability to utilize components of the learning environment effectively.
Expanding Horizons: Writing Cliffhangers, Jerry Phillips
Expanding Horizons: Writing Cliffhangers, Jerry Phillips
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Cliffhangers are story points which leave the reader in suspense. I recommend writing cliffhangers as a way of engaging students in the writing process. In this exercise students take three steps recommended by writing educators toward effective writing. First, they develop raw written material during several minutes of nonstop freewriting (Elbow, 1981). Second, they reread material, searching until they find a focus to develop further (Murray, 1987). Third, they publish a book when finished (Calkins, 1986).

Domestic Relations, Barry B. Mcgough, Andrea G. Alpern
Domestic Relations, Barry B. Mcgough, Andrea G. Alpern
Mercer Law Review
The Georgia Supreme Court has decided that a medical school education, a medical license, and contingent fee contracts are not marital property subject to equitable division. The court also declared that a judgment modifying alimony is effective no earlier than the date of the judgment and that an award of joint legal custody does not preclude an award of child support. This Article is divided into three sections. Section I covers cases dealing with child support and visitation; Section II covers cases dealing with settlement agreements, alimony, and equitable division; and Section III deals with contempt.

Isolating Failure Mechanisms In A Fiberglass/Epoxy Tensile Test Specimen Using Acoustic Emission Signal Parameters, Michael Kouvarakos
Isolating Failure Mechanisms In A Fiberglass/Epoxy Tensile Test Specimen Using Acoustic Emission Signal Parameters, Michael Kouvarakos
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
This study used acoustic emission (AE) signal parameters to isolate the failure mechanisms in a 0° unidirectional, fiberglass/epoxy tensile test specimen. Since several failure mechanisms were known to be present, the lack of any distinctly identifiable bands in the original amplitude distribution indicated that there was considerable overlap between the AE signals of the various failure mechanisms. In order to separate the amplitude bands associated with each mechanism, it was necessary to sort on the duration of the AE signal. Two additional plots, counts versus amplitude and hits versus counts, were used to verify that the amplitude distributions were comprised …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
On Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 138, standard shipboard procedures were modified to allow for the real-time monitoring of several laboratory core-scanning systems that provide centimeter-scale measurements of saturated bulk density, magnetic susceptibility and digital color reflectance. These continuous, high-resolution data sets were used to ensure the proper offset of multiple holes and to splice together complete sedimentary sections. Typically, the spliced, continuousediment sections were found to be about 10% longer than the section drilled, as measured by the length of the drill string. While the source of this elongation is not yet fully understood, it must be compensated for …
Laminar/Turbulent Oscillating Flow In Circular Pipes, Kyung H. Ahn, Mounir B. Ibrahim
Laminar/Turbulent Oscillating Flow In Circular Pipes, Kyung H. Ahn, Mounir B. Ibrahim
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
A two-dimensional oscillating flow analysis was conducted simulating the gas flow inside Stirling engine heat exchangers. Both laminar and turbulent oscillating pipe flow were investigated numerically for Remax = 1,920 (Va = 80), 10,800 (Va = 272), 19,300 (Va = 272), and 60,800 (Va = 126). The results are here compared with experimental results of previous investigators. Predictions of the flow regime on present oscillating flow conditions are also checked by comparing velocity amplitudes and phase difference with those from laminar theory and quasi-steady profile. A high Reynolds number k-ε turbulence model was used for turbulent oscillating pipe flow. …
