Winona Campus Life

Winona Campus Life was a weekly laboratory newspaper produced by the WSU Mass Communciation Department students and printed as a supplement to the Sunday Winona Daily News, which began in September 1983. The newspaper provided coverage of the four institutions of higher education in Winona: Winona State University, St. Mary's University, College of Saint Teresa, and Winona Area Vocational-Technical School. It was created to provide a place for Mass Communcation students to publish their articles and photographs with the idea of generating reader feedback, which is essential in journalism education.

Low-Cost Quick-Look Radiation Testing Of Electronic Components For The Mars Observer Camera, S.M. Brylow, T.A. Soulanille Sep 1992

Low-Cost Quick-Look Radiation Testing Of Electronic Components For The Mars Observer Camera, S.M. Brylow, T.A. Soulanille

Small Satellite Conference

The development of modern electronics has far outstripped the inventory of components for which radiation tolerance has been determined and published. New component characteristics require a more integrated approach to radiation tolerance in system design. The Mars Observer Camera performance requirements could not be met with a design restricted to components of established radiation hardness. A balanced approach that intimately involved radiation effects in the system design process was required. This included low-cost, quick turnaround testing of total ionizing dose and heavy ion induced single event phenomena of upset and latchup. The results were used to inform the system design, …

High-Data-Rate Communication Techniques For Small Satellites, Robert Bokulic Sep 1992

High-Data-Rate Communication Techniques For Small Satellites, Robert Bokulic

Small Satellite Conference

Modulation and coding techniques that are both power and bandwidth-efficient are examined at the system level in this paper. Such techniques include convolutional encoding with QPSK modulation and the relatively new trellis-coded modulation. Power and bandwidth trade-offs are discussed, a sample link calculation is given, and hardware implementation is considered.

A Unique New Antenna Technology For Small (And Large) Satellites, Bernard Raab, Larry Sikora Sep 1992

A Unique New Antenna Technology For Small (And Large) Satellites, Bernard Raab, Larry Sikora

Small Satellite Conference

The application of large antennas in spacecraft is often limited by available volume, as well as by the more usual mass limitation. Shroud dimensions usually determine the maximum aperture which can be carried without resorting to complex and potentially unreliable unfurling mechanisms. This applies all the more in a small-satellite environment with the smaller available launch volumes and severe mass limits of this species. FLAPS (Flat Parabolic Surface) is a newly developed technology for RF reflector surfaces which frees the spacecraft designer from the packaging rigidity of the common parabolic dish. It offers the ability to essentially duplicate the capability …

Downlink Signal Level And Error Measurements For Pacsat-1, Robert Diersing Sep 1992

Downlink Signal Level And Error Measurements For Pacsat-1, Robert Diersing

Small Satellite Conference

The PACSAT-l store-and-forward amateur radio satellite was placed into low earth orbit (LEO) on January 22, 1990 using the Ariane Structure for Auxiliary Payloads (ASAP). Most of the first year of operation was spent on application software development with full time operation of file server and file broadcast services beginning in late 1990. During 1991, both ground station and satellite-based software matured and stabilized such that the satellite sees a high volume of daily use both by individual amateur radio station operators and stations acting as gateways for terrestrial packet radio networks operating in the Amateur Radio Service. The purpose …

Using Digital Signal Processors On Small Satellites, Don Lefevre, Daniel Mulally, Mark Heiberger Sep 1992

Using Digital Signal Processors On Small Satellites, Don Lefevre, Daniel Mulally, Mark Heiberger

Small Satellite Conference

Digital Signal Processing integrated circuits (DSPs) have improved terrestrial communications systems by allowing the implementation of greatly improved transmitters and receivers. In applications from dial-up modems, to echo-free conference phones, to customer-specific hearing aids, DSPs have allowed the implementation of functions that would be impractical without them. However, DSPs have had limited use in small satellites due to lower available data rates and relatively high power consumption. Also, most of the existing DSPs have not been space qualified. Improvements in semiconductor processes are allowing the construction of integrated circuits (ICs) with much smaller features. In fact, 0.6 micron processes are …

A Compact Radar Altimeter Satellite For Monitoring Global Climate Change, J.A Giannini, C.C. Kilgus, E.L. Reynolds Sep 1992

A Compact Radar Altimeter Satellite For Monitoring Global Climate Change, J.A Giannini, C.C. Kilgus, E.L. Reynolds

Small Satellite Conference

Altimetry has become the focus of global climate studies because it is the only tool available able to provide both mesoscale (100-500 kIn) and basin-scale (10,000 kIn) circulation information on a global, synoptic basis. . The Atlas-launched Navy Geosat mission proved the capability of the radar altimeter to measure the mesoscale ocean features. A lightsat compatible Geosat Follow-On Technology Model (GTM) altimeter, capable of Scout or Pegasus launch and with half the weight and power (63-lbs and 69-W) of the Geosat altimeter, was developed and built at JHU/APL. This altimeter demonstrated the feasibility of a compact satellite version of Geosat. …

A Low-Cost Small Satellite Space Radar System, Bernard Raab, Robert Bartlett Sep 1992

A Low-Cost Small Satellite Space Radar System, Bernard Raab, Robert Bartlett

Small Satellite Conference

The advantages of space-based radar have been frequently noted for such applications as environmental monitoring, crop detection, soil-moisture determination, coastal ice measurement, and all-weather surveillance, to name just a few. The FLAPSTM ("Flat Parabolic Surface") antenna technology developed by Malibu Research, enables the conception of a smallsatellite radar system. The design described in this paper is that of a lightweight surveillance satellite capable of being launched on a Pegasus booster. It is capable of detecting small ships and aircraft, such as may be required for drug-interdiction missions and other all-weather surveillance applications. The FLAPSTM antenna has many of the features …

Magnetic And Momentum Bias Attitude Control Design For The Hete Small Satellite, Daniel Chang Sep 1992

Magnetic And Momentum Bias Attitude Control Design For The Hete Small Satellite, Daniel Chang

Small Satellite Conference

A design study of the attitude control system for the High Energy Transient Experiment (RETE) small satellite is presented. The satellite is 3-axis stabilized and sun pointing, with stringent pointing stability requirements. For actuation, magnetic torquers and a momentum wheel are chosen for their technological maturity and lack of consumables. One science instrument (CCD UV camera) and sun sensors provide attitude measurement. Two complimentary control strategies are implemented to maximize controllability given the expected wide variation in Earth field direction. As this actuator complement is particularly suitable for a variety of small satellite missions, the design guidelines presented here should …

The Anchor: 1992

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The Legacies Of Deindustrialization And The Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, Douglas M. Reynolds Sep 1992

The Legacies Of Deindustrialization And The Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, Douglas M. Reynolds

New England Journal of Public Policy

Creation of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor and release of a master plan for cultural and physical resource development is creating a new standard for private, local, state, and federal partnerships. Actions by the Corridor's partners are shaped by both past and contemporary economic development issues. Using tools of humanistic inquiry — history, economics, preservation, sociology, political science — for social and economic purposes signifies far-reaching shifts and possibilities for public planning and policy philosophies in both public and private agencies.
