Revitalizing The Mathematics Program To Improve Student Achievement For First Through Sixth Grade Students, William J. Zipparo
Revitalizing The Mathematics Program To Improve Student Achievement For First Through Sixth Grade Students, William J. Zipparo
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report describes a program for improving mathematics achievement and test scores of first-through-sixth-grade students for the specific purpose of obtaining a predetermined state score level on the mathematics subtest of the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills annual achievement test. Original problem evidence became apparent after the review of the district’s tasting results for students from 1988-89 school year. The Maurica River Township Board of Education voiced concern over the fact that the district students' mathematics achievement level was either below or just slightly above that of the Stata's minimum level of proficiency in mathematics.
An analysis of the problem …
Improving Performance In Mathematical Problem Solving Of Fifth-Grade Students Through Use Of Calculators And Extension Of Time Spent Solving Problems Into The Natural Environment Of The Students., June S. Clarke
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed to improve performance in solving mathematical word problems by fifth-grade students by decreasing anxiety and increasing numeracy, text comprehension, and time spent on solving problems.
The writer created a Parent Problem Solving Packet to involve parents in an attempt to create more time spent on solving non routine problems outside of class. Calculator activities were planned and executed in the classroom in order that the time usually 1pent in repetitive computation could be used in mathematical problem solving A Calculator Club which met after school was established. The Club field test activities for use in the …
A Cross-Age Tutoring Program To Raise Self-Esteem In Learning Disabled, Regular And Gifted Elementary School Students, Marian J. King
A Cross-Age Tutoring Program To Raise Self-Esteem In Learning Disabled, Regular And Gifted Elementary School Students, Marian J. King
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was originally designed to provide teachers with a means of enhancing the self-esteem of learning disabled (LD) students by using them as cross-age tutors in a Kindergarten class. It was assumed that, by engaging them to help younger students, LD tutors would experience a feeling of accomplishment and self-worth, and therefore develop a sense of being capable, useful, and appreciated. It was further assumed that this more positive self-esteem would lead to a healthier social, emotional and intellectual self-perception and behavior. As the project developed, other students (regular and gifted, including whole 5th and 6th grade classes) asked …
Empowering Learning Disabled Students Through Direct Interventions In The Classroom, Dorothy Gleberman
Empowering Learning Disabled Students Through Direct Interventions In The Classroom, Dorothy Gleberman
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This: practicum was designed to empower six severe learning disabled students In the district's self-contained program for the middle grades. These students exhibited a cluster of observable behaviors that reflected their poor self- concept, external locus of control, and poor social skills. These behaviors and attitudes were detrimental to their learning and success in school.
The writer restructured the self-contained class from a teacher-directed one to a student-directed one that provided dally leadership roles and changed the Instructional Bode from traditional to cooperative. The students were also provided direct instruction In social skills, learning, and learning disabilities, In collaboration with …
Improving The Keyboarding Composition Skills Of Secondary Business Education Students Through A Structured Approach, Gay E. Parker
Improving The Keyboarding Composition Skills Of Secondary Business Education Students Through A Structured Approach, Gay E. Parker
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed to improve the student's manual keyboarding composition skill. Traditionally, students learn to keyboard from material that is already typed or handwritten and seldom have opportunities to learn the advanced skill of composition keyboarding. Inherent in learning this skill are other requisite skills of well written composition, accurate punctuation and grammar, and fastidious proofreading.
This writer developed a program to integrate these skills in a structured, progressive plan. To develop the manual skill, the students were dictated questions requiring one letter responses, progressing to full-paragraph responses as demonstrated each day in a 5 minute warm-up journal writing. …
The Articulation Process: A Model For Transition From Middle School To High School For Exceptional Education Students, Carol Rees Jellie
The Articulation Process: A Model For Transition From Middle School To High School For Exceptional Education Students, Carol Rees Jellie
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was deigned to coordinate and standardize the articulation process between the junior high school feeder schools and the secondary center school for exceptional education students. Meetings, and inservice sessions were conducted with counselors, parents, teachers and students to increase the understanding of the criteria for placement of exceptional educational students.
The writer developed an articulation time structure; designed appropriate transition forms; evaluated student referral information; and administered a post registration survey of the articulation process.
Analysts of the data revealed that the standardization of articulation was successful process and that referrals for transition to secondary school better met …

This practicum addresses the need to improve the cultural proficiency of high school students studying French. The writer developed and implemented a twelve-week unit designed to teach the cultures of francophone countries to 20 randomly selected first-level students.
The writer developed and administered a survey and a pretest to determine the difficulty of students to demonstrate knowledge of and appreciation for French-speaking countries and people. Individual and group activities and a posttest measured the outcomes of the implementation.
Analysis of the evaluation data indicated an improvement in students’ level of cultural proficiency. They displayed an increase ability to recognize and …
Increasing Parent Involvement In The Reevaluation Process Of High School Level Special Education Students By Accommodating Scheduled Meeting Times Valuing Parent Input And Sensitizing Parents And Staff To The Needs And The Rights Of Handicapped Students, Larry Taylor
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The practicum was designed to address the problem of relatively few parents involving themselves in the reevaluation process of high school level special education students. The intervention sought to increase parent involvement in the development of their child’s academic and career/vocational programs.
The writer developed a three-month program and designed a comprehensive system which included personal attempts to get parents to attend reevaluation meetings. This design also incorporated a component where parents’ input in decision making was welcomed. Both parent training and staff training were conducted and deemed important parts of not just a short term solution to increase attendance …

Materials considered for use were designed by incorporating the logic of children's thinking skills at different stages of development. Positive feedback of student success was provided for students …
Morphometric Analysis Of Dolines, A. Bondesan, M. Meneghel, U. Sauro
Morphometric Analysis Of Dolines, A. Bondesan, M. Meneghel, U. Sauro
International Journal of Speleology
The doline is the most specific surface form of karst landscapes, which enables one to distinguish them from “normal” erosion landscapes shaped by surface water. From a morphodynamic point of view the doline constitutes an elementary hydrographic unit, comparable to a simple basin, which, with its system of slopes, conveys water to the absorbing points at the bottom into an underground network. The morphometric study of these karst landforms enables a quantitative analysis of karst environment. Comparisons of the various parameters may give unexpected results and lead to new hypotheses about the evolution and the dynamism of the karst “geo-ecosystem”. …

Constrained Completion: Theory, Implementation, And Results, Daniel Patrick Murphy
Constrained Completion: Theory, Implementation, And Results, Daniel Patrick Murphy
Doctoral Dissertations
"The Knuth-Bendix completion procedure produces complete sets of reductions but can not handle certain rewrite rules such as commutativity. In order to handle such theories, completion procedure were created to find complete sets of reductions modulo an equational theory. The major problem with this method is that it requires a specialized unification algorithm for the equational theory. Although this method works well when such an algorithm exists, these algorithms are not always available and thus alternative methods are needed to attack problems. A way of doing this is to use a completion procedure which finds complete sets of constrained reductions. …
The Percentage Consonants Correct And Intelligibility Of Normal, Language Delayed, And History Of Language Delayed Children, Randi Jartun
The Percentage Consonants Correct And Intelligibility Of Normal, Language Delayed, And History Of Language Delayed Children, Randi Jartun
Dissertations and Theses
Highly unintelligible children may mistakenly be assumed to have difficulty only with the misarticulation of consonants. Expressive language concerns may be ignored while the primary focus of intervention becomes the correction of misarticulated speech. Questions have arisen regarding the possibility of both speech and expressive language difficulties contributing to unintelligibility. Shriberg and Kwiatkowski (1982) developed an ordinal means of rating severity of involvement. One of the constructs of the severity scale was intelligibility. The metric percentage consonants correct (PCC) was developed to identify severity of involvement of disorders of phonology.

Perpetrators, Bystanders, Victims, And Survivors, Maribal Rodriquez-Lopez
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This work is divided into five sections, the first being the Introduction. In Section II, shame, perpetrators, bystanders, victims and survivors are defined at length. Chapter 1, entitled, Shame Defined, differentiates between embarrassment, guilt and shame. In Healing the Shame that Binds You, John Bradshaw (1988) describes shame: It is like internal bleeding. Exposure to oneself lies at the heart of toxic shame. A shame-based person will guard against exposing his inner self to others, but more significantly, he will guard against exposing himself to himself. Toxic shame is so excruciating because it is the painful exposure of the believed …
