Parallel Error Tolerance Scheme Based On The Hill Climbing Nature Of Simulated Annealing, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Chul-Eui Hong Jan 1992

Parallel Error Tolerance Scheme Based On The Hill Climbing Nature Of Simulated Annealing, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Chul-Eui Hong

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In parallelizing simulated annealing in a multicomputer, maintaining the global state S involves explicit message traffic and is a critical performance bottleneck. One way to mitigate this bottleneck is to amortize the overhead of these state updates over as many parallel state changes as possible. Using this technique introduces errors in the calculated cost C(S) of a particular state S used by the annealing process. Analytically derived bounds are placed on this error in order to assure convergence to the correct result. The resulting parallel simulated annealing algorithm dynamically changes the frequency of global updates as a function of the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The authors present a number of different configurations of a neural network and identify a particular case which is most suitable for power flow analysis in real-time applications. The advantage of fast computation of the artificial neural network (ANN) is used for obtaining power flow solutions in real time. The inputs to the ANN are the real and reactive power generating and demand in the system, and the output data are the complex bus voltages. A few configurations of the neural network were experimented with, and the best results were achieved with a single-layer feedforward neural network with nonlinear feedback. …

To ascertain the nature of children's television viewing patterns, a questionnaire was administered and viewing record timetables …

Leveraged Buyouts, Kurt J. Smith Jan 1992

Leveraged Buyouts, Kurt J. Smith

Theses : Honours

This study comprehensively reviews theoretical and empirical literature pertaining to leveraged buyouts. An agency theory framework best describes the source of LBO value creation. Agency conflicts are mitigated through extensive utilisation of debt capital and concentrated equity ownership, which are functions of asset and organisation structures. The evidence generally supports the hypothesis that economic wealth is created by leveraged buyouts, rather than merely redistributed among stakeholders. This thesis uses a multiple case design to examine leveraged buyouts in Australia. It compiles data from a broad range of public and private sources, and conducts qualitative and quantitative analysis on six (6) …

Theses : Honours

In addressing the myths of past and present social and familial structures and hierarchies. Post-Colonial Literatures are forced to confront complex assertions of identity, evolved through an inheritance shaped by both traditional and foreign influence. In a study of Buchi Emecheta' s novels, The Slave Girl, The Joys of Motherhood and Second Class Citizen, a tension is thus seen to emerge within the African heroine, between “her communally bred sense of herself as an African, and her feminist aspirations for autonomy and self-realization as a woman" (Frank, 1987, 45). Though the female protagonists of these narratives are placed within different …

An Interpretivist Agenda, Gary S. Lawson Jan 1992

An Interpretivist Agenda, Gary S. Lawson

Faculty Scholarship

As I write these words, bevies of law clerks assigned to cases involving the Bill of Rights are dutifully editing their bench memos for publication in the national reporter system. Once printed, these bench memos will be solemnly treated by lawyers, scholars, other law clerks, and the occasional judge who runs across them as legally significant, or even binding, interpretations of the Constitution. Two features of this burgeoning mass of otherwise unpublishable law review comments bear mention. First, most of them are tedious, tendentious, pretentious, and badly reasoned when reasoned at all, just as one would expect from authors who …

A New Method For Calculating The Economic Benefits Of Varying Degrees Of Power Factor Correction For Industrial Plant Loads, Mohammed Ishaque

Dissertations and Theses

A comparative study of the economic benefits that can be obtained from different degrees of power factor correction for medium and small scale industrial installations is shown. A new approach for precise calculation of kws and kvars required at different power factors is presented. These calculated values are used to find the return on investments for the capacitors needed for power factor correction. The developed method is easy to use, cost effective, accurate and will help electrical engineers with minimum knowledge of power systems to precisely determine the savings available by improving the power factor of an industrial load.

Good Faith In English Law, Howard Hunter Jan 1992

Good Faith In English Law, Howard Hunter

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

'Good faith' is a term often used but rarely defined or analysed with care. In this short volume O'Connor has undertaken a formidable task: the development of a general principle of good faith that is applicable throughout English law. He begins with a proposed definition and then proceeds through brief analyses of the good faith concept in six areas of the law (administrative law, contracts, company law, criminal law, torts, trusts and property). He makes a quick excursion across the Channel to consider the civil law approach to the principle of good faith and then concludes with a chapter devoted …
