The Cult Of Culture: An Analysis And Plan For Teaching About Organizational Culture, James E Mason Jan 1992

The Cult Of Culture: An Analysis And Plan For Teaching About Organizational Culture, James E Mason

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Five general themes are prevalent in the literature of organizational culture: Meaning, structure, language, stability/instability, and reification. This thesis gives a broad general overview of the concept of culture as it relates to communication, analyzes the literature in terms of the above, and makes suggestions for its use to develop in students an understanding and appreciation of the concept of organizational culture. A prescriptive reading plan and a teaching plan are included to allow teachers to select topics that have importance either for themselves or their students.

Microwave Digestion Methods For Preparation Of Platinum Ore Samples For Icp Analysis, Piotr Nowinski Jan 1992

Microwave Digestion Methods For Preparation Of Platinum Ore Samples For Icp Analysis, Piotr Nowinski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The technique of microwave digestion was evaluated as a possible alternative to conventional sample preparation methods for the platinum ores prior to spectroscopic analysis. Microwave energy used with aqua regia in closed vessel provides elevated pressure and rapid heating which significantly reduce digestion time. All analyses were carried out by inductively coupled plasma atomic-emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). To reduce matrix interferences during analysis, a predigestion step with 50 mL of 1:1 nitric acid was introduced. Both ICP-AES and inductively plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) were used for analysis of sample extracts. ICP-AES analyses showed improved recoveries of Pd (60-80%) and Pt (30-60%) …

Effects Of Bse On Depression/Anxiety In Women Diagnosed With Breast Cancer, Cynthia Ann Schnetter O'Neal Jan 1992

Effects Of Bse On Depression/Anxiety In Women Diagnosed With Breast Cancer, Cynthia Ann Schnetter O'Neal

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study employed three questionnaires to determine if depression, anxiety and mood levels in women recently diagnosed with breast cancer differed when the breast lump was discovered via breast self-exam versus discovery by physician examination, mammogram or accidental discovery by self or spouse. Depression was measured by the Beck Depression Inventory, anxiety was measured by the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Scale and mood was measured by the General Health Questionnaire. The Neuman Systems Model was the conceptual framework for this study. Sixty-two women between the ages of 26-80 years completed the three questionnaires while awaiting the physician during an office visit. …

A Deterministic Surface Estimation Algorithm Using Parametric Line Equations, James Peter Poulos Jan 1992

A Deterministic Surface Estimation Algorithm Using Parametric Line Equations, James Peter Poulos

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we develop a new deterministic surface estimation algorithm. Given a network of scattered data in the three-dimensional space, we use the Delaunay's Triangulation Method to connect the given points with triangles, subsequently we use out method to interpolate within the path defined by each triangle. The resulted patches have geometric continuity, and the generated surface is also geometrically continuous. Our algorithm is a parametric surface estimation algorithm, and an example showing how it can be implemented is given.

Spectroscopy Of Tetravalent Chromium In Different Hosts In Search For New, Tunable, Broad Band Lasers In The 1.2 Um Band, Chiranjit Deka Jan 1992

Spectroscopy Of Tetravalent Chromium In Different Hosts In Search For New, Tunable, Broad Band Lasers In The 1.2 Um Band, Chiranjit Deka

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Spectroscopic studies are presented for cr4+ ions in different hosts. The crystals investigated in this work are divided into two categories. In the first category are included crystals containing chromium in the tetravalent state only. These are purely cr4+ doped crystals. The second category crystals are more complex, containing chromium in both tetravalent and trivalent states. Detailed investigations of the absorption and luminescence characteristics of cr4+ in cr4+:Y 2SiO5, which is a purely cr4+ doped crystal, allowed a better understanding to be achieved for the spectroscopic behavior of cr4+ in tetrahedral sites. Based …

National Socialism And The Rule Of Law, Donald P. Kommers Jan 1992

National Socialism And The Rule Of Law, Donald P. Kommers

Journal Articles

Ingo Muller's book, originally published in 1987 as Furchtbare Juristen: Die unbewaltigte Vergangenheit unserer Justiz (literally "Dreadful Jurists: The Remorseless Past of Our Judiciary"), describes the moral collapse of the German legal profession and its role in facilitating the construction and maintenance of the Nazi regime. Gracefully translated by Deborah Lucas Schneider, Hitler's Justice seeks, first, to show how legal professionals betrayed their trust as lawyers, prosecutors, and judges and, second, to assess the degree to which Germany in the postwar period reformed its legal system, purged the judiciary of former Nazis, and rededicated itself to the rule of law. …

The Interaction Of Source And Post-Event Misinformation On The Accuracy Of Eyewitness Testimony, Dirk Dickens, Alice Ishigame, David Subacz, Stephanie Sponsel, Matthew Strader, Judith Foy Jan 1992

The Interaction Of Source And Post-Event Misinformation On The Accuracy Of Eyewitness Testimony, Dirk Dickens, Alice Ishigame, David Subacz, Stephanie Sponsel, Matthew Strader, Judith Foy

Modern Psychological Studies

The recall of an event such as a robbery has been shown to be affected by how closely post-event information corresponds to what the witness actually saw. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the effect of misleading information may be influenced by expertise of the source of the post-event information. Results revealed that subjects recalled less accurately when they received misleading information in the narrative than when the information corresponded with what they had viewed, whereas the accuracy of the recall was unaffected by whether the witness in the narrative was an expert or a non-expert. Subjects …

Subliminal Perception And The Stroop Effect, Sandra Harvey, Shannon Keathley, Delinda Muniz, Ginger Tidmore Jan 1992

Subliminal Perception And The Stroop Effect, Sandra Harvey, Shannon Keathley, Delinda Muniz, Ginger Tidmore

Modern Psychological Studies

The Stroop effect and subliminal perception are two phenomena which have been studied for years. However, the potential relation between the two has not been conclusively explored. This experiment was designed to demonstrate that a relationship between the two may exist. The procedure consisted of subliminally presenting the name of a color written in black letters simultaneously with a colored stimulus. The supraliminal colored stimulus and subliminal word stimulus were presented on a screen by use of a projector and a tachistoscope (t-scope) respectively. It was hypothesized that subliminal perception would create interference on the projected Stroop Test simulating a …

Some Problems With Contract As Promise, Randy E. Barnett Jan 1992

Some Problems With Contract As Promise, Randy E. Barnett

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The promise theory views the origin of contract in the making of a promise. This means that it views the creation of contracts as arising, in an important part, from the voluntary acts of promisors rather than from third parties like the State. In this regard, the theory facilitates the classical liberal value of freedom to contract. The promise theory also supports the notion that contracts should be interpreted according to the terms of the promise rather than by imposing terms on the parties. In this regard, the theory facilitates the classical liberal value of freedom from contract. These strengths …

Role Of Imitation In Language Assessment Tests, Abha Gupta Jan 1992

Role Of Imitation In Language Assessment Tests, Abha Gupta

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

A study investigated whether imitation plays a significant role in the acquisition of grammar. Three 6- to 8-year-old hearing-impaired children were administered the Grammatical Analysis of Elicited Language--Simple Sentence Level Test (GAEL), which is designed to evaluate hearing-impaired children's use of grammatical aspects of spoken and/or signed English. Subjects' verbal responses to the "imitated" component (in which subjects were asked to say just what the tester said) of the GAEL were transcribed and analyzed. Results indicated that imitated speech is neither longer nor grammatically more advanced than non-imitated, spontaneous speech. Findings suggest that the children produced "unique" language structures to …

Suicide In Alabama, 1980-1989, Tiepu Liu Jan 1992

Suicide In Alabama, 1980-1989, Tiepu Liu

All ETDs from UAB

Suicide is a cause of death more heavily influenced by socioeconomic and behavioral factors than are other causes. In order to understand recent suicide trends, to describe the pattern of suicide rates, and to examine the effects of potential risk factors, we conducted a study in Alabama using suicide death certificate data from 1980 through 1989. U.S. Census reports of 1980 and 1990 were used to calculate suicide rates. Socioeconomic indicators as well as demographic data were also collected by county and over time for studying their relationships with suicide rates. There was a trend of increasing suicide rates in …

Optimal Response To Periodic Shortage: Engineering/Economic Analysis For A Large Urban Water District, Anthony Fisher, David Fullerton, Nile Hatch, Peter Reinelt Jan 1992

Optimal Response To Periodic Shortage: Engineering/Economic Analysis For A Large Urban Water District, Anthony Fisher, David Fullerton, Nile Hatch, Peter Reinelt

Faculty Publications

The problem addressed by this study is how a large urban water district can best respond to a drought or the prospect of a drought. Specifically, what is the least cost combination of alternatives to meet periodic shortages? A solution to this problem may involve structural approaches (such as developing new local storage capacity), a mix of structural and nonstructural (such as conjunctive use combined with water exchanges or sales), or purely nonstructural approaches (such as changes in water pricing). The application is to the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), which includes portions of Alameda and Contra Costa counties …

Monopoles And Confinement In Lattice-Gauge Theory., Vandana Singh Jan 1992

Monopoles And Confinement In Lattice-Gauge Theory., Vandana Singh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The mechanism by which quarks, believed to be the fundamental constituents of matter, are prevented from existing in the free state is still unknown. The phenomenon of quark confinement is one of the fundamental problems in physics. One of the most viable candidates for a hypothesis of confinement is the dual superconductor mechanism that likens quark confinement to the Meissner effect in superconductors. The peculiarities of quark interactions make a numerical approach to the subject a necessity, and therefore, much of the work in this area has been done through the methods of lattice gauge theory, with the simplicities afforded …

A Study On The Aquic Conditions Of Two Natraqualfs In The Coastal Plain Of Louisiana., Ariel Alejandro Szogi Jan 1992

A Study On The Aquic Conditions Of Two Natraqualfs In The Coastal Plain Of Louisiana., Ariel Alejandro Szogi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study had the purposes of investigating the aquic conditions of two selected Natraqualfs to define the relationship between wetness and morphological properties and prediction of major soil processes. The proposed criteria for aquic conditions as defined by the International Committee on Aquic Conditions (ICOMAQ) were identified by: (i) presence of redoximorphic features, and (ii) measurement of saturation and reduction. They were used to locally verify morphological inferences used to predict the aquic conditions. Morphological properties and laboratory analysis were used to predict the periodicity and duration of saturation and reduction. Soil and ground water analyses were used to understand …

Studies On Escherichia Coli Cell Division: Overexpression, Purification, And Quantitative Determination Offtsa Protein., Haichao Wang Jan 1992

Studies On Escherichia Coli Cell Division: Overexpression, Purification, And Quantitative Determination Offtsa Protein., Haichao Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

FtsA is an essential cell division protein which is synthesized in minute amounts in Escherichia coli. To study the effects of overexpressing ftsA on the phenotype of E. coli cells, DNA fragments encoding the ftsA gene were subcloned downstream of a lac or a tac promoter in two plasmids. High-level expression of the ftsA gene from these promoters inhibited normal cell septation and caused the cells to become long, nonseptate filaments. Continued overexpression of ftsA resulted in the filaments developing spherical bulges up to 4 um in diameter. It is suggested that these bulges may emanate from septation sites because …
