Sex-Related Differences In Autonomous Learning Behaviours And Mathematics Achievement, Laura Beahan Jan 1992

Sex-Related Differences In Autonomous Learning Behaviours And Mathematics Achievement, Laura Beahan

Theses : Honours

The autonomous learning behaviour model proposed by Fennema and Peterson (1985a, 1985b) hypothesises that sex- related differences in mathematics are a result of sex-related differences in autonomous learning behaviours. Autonomous learning behaviours include choosing to engage in high-level tasks, preferring to work independently on such tasks and persisting at them. The purpose of this study was to investigate sex-related differences in autonomous learning behaviours and to determine any relationship between the presence of these behaviours and achievement in mathematics. Twelve students studying the Year 1 unit "Foundations of Mathematics" were selected for the study, including two males and two females …

Student Perceptions Of The Transition From Year 10 To Year 11, Tim Mcdonald Jan 1992

Student Perceptions Of The Transition From Year 10 To Year 11, Tim Mcdonald

Theses : Honours

Issues associated with the transition from Year 10 to Year 11 have largely been ignored by researchers. Previous research has predominantly focussed on the primary to secondary transition experience. The existing problem of lower school to upper school transition has been compounded by the increased importance of upper school and the rising retention rates. This study investigated student perceptions of the transition from Year 10 to Year 11. It explored student concerns encountered in the transition and the differences they perceived between Year 10 and Year 11 after having entered Year 11. A case study approach, incorporating both qualitative and …

Awarding Punitive Damages In Securities Industry Arbitration: Working For A Just Result, Anthony Michael Sabino Jan 1992

Awarding Punitive Damages In Securities Industry Arbitration: Working For A Just Result, Anthony Michael Sabino

University of Richmond Law Review

It is often said that the business of America is business, and probably the best exemplifications of that old truism are the nation's stock exchanges. To be sure, not only stock, but bonds, options, commodities, futures, and a whole plethora of instruments are traded daily in exchanges large and small, in a seamless web straddling the country, if not the world.

Franklin V. Gwinnett County Public Schools: The Implication Of Remedies For An Implied Cause Of Action, Ellen F. Firsching Jan 1992

Franklin V. Gwinnett County Public Schools: The Implication Of Remedies For An Implied Cause Of Action, Ellen F. Firsching

University of Richmond Law Review

According to the common law doctrine of ubi jus, ibi remedium, where there is a right, there is a remedy. The United States Supreme Court has long recognized the validity of this doctrine. Traditionally, the Court was very liberal in recognizing private rights of action, and granting injunctive and monetary relief for violations of constitutional and statutory rights in the absence of explicit congressional authorization. In Bell v. Hood, the Supreme Court stated: "[W]here federally protected rights have been invaded, it has been the rule from the beginning that courts will be alert to adjust their remedies so as to …

It's Not Love, But It's Not Bad: A Response To Critics Of Prepaid College Tuition Plans, J. Timothy Philipps, Ed R. Haden Jan 1992

It's Not Love, But It's Not Bad: A Response To Critics Of Prepaid College Tuition Plans, J. Timothy Philipps, Ed R. Haden

University of Richmond Law Review

Two years ago one of the authors published an article surveying the tax ramifications of prepaid college tuition plans, with a focus on the Michigan plan - the Michigan Education Trust ("MET"). That article took a generally positive view of such plans in general and of MET in particular. It discussed three basic themes: 1) the uncertainty of existing tax law with respect to prepaid tuition plans requires clarifying congressional legislation; 2) the position of the Internal Revenue Service ("Service") with respect to prepaid tuition plans, as enunciated in a private letter ruling addressed to MET, is flawed; and 3) …
