"Nobody Said Anything" Issues Of Communication In The Short Stories Of Raymond Carver, Darren Bosch Jan 1992

"Nobody Said Anything" Issues Of Communication In The Short Stories Of Raymond Carver, Darren Bosch

Honors Papers

In this paper I plan to divide my consideration of the different levels of communication in Carver's work into several categories, realizing that these categories overlap and are in no way mutually exclusive. First, I will consider Carver's characters, what might be called communication within the story, or communication as theme. Second, I will specifically look at the narrator, who is both character (and therefore a part of the issues of communication within the story) and communication link between the text and the reader. Finally I will address how narrative point of view and other aspects of Carver's style, such …

The Evolution Of Women's Intercollegiate Athletics At Oberlin College, Leland J. Brandt Jan 1992

The Evolution Of Women's Intercollegiate Athletics At Oberlin College, Leland J. Brandt

Honors Papers

Over two years ago, I read an article written in 1973 entitled "Sport is Unfair to Women." While researching possible honors topics, I remembered that article. Preliminary research uncovered a wealth of information on women's athletics, Title IX, and the continuing problems faced by female athletes. By sheer coincidence, I learned that Oberlin College was investigated for possible Title IX violations. Further inquiry revealed that little if any research existed concerning the history of Oberlin's young women's athletic program. Before I could say "Jack Scott," the topic entranced me, and I remain under its spell to this day. If ever …

Error Analysis And Correction In Esl/Efl Teaching, Hua Tang, Jian-Sheng Zhao Jan 1992

Error Analysis And Correction In Esl/Efl Teaching, Hua Tang, Jian-Sheng Zhao

PASAA

Errors and mistakes are by-products of language learning. They are inevitable, but a necessary part of learning a language. Errors and mistakes comprise a significant portion of a learner's language performance, and provide important insights into the processes of second language acquisition and instruction. They indicate that learning activity is taking place in the learner, and also show us that the learner is on his or her way toward target language proficiency. To some extent, it is errors and mistakes that pave the way for a language learner towards target language proficiency.

Handling Missing Data In Time Series Analysis, Suzanne M. Colby Jan 1992

Handling Missing Data In Time Series Analysis, Suzanne M. Colby

Open Access Master's Theses

The nature of time series designs often leads to missing data, due to its requirement of taking a large number of repeated observations on a single experimental unit. There are many methods available for estimating missing observations; some have been borrowed or adapted from univariate methods, while others have been developed specifically for the time series problem. This study compares the effects of four different methods of data estimation on time series analysis. These methods include: (1) deletion of the missing data points; (2) substitution of the mean of the series; (3) substitution of the mean of the observations adjacent …

The Coping Strategies Of Taiwanese Students At An American University, Litsong Lu Jan 1992

The Coping Strategies Of Taiwanese Students At An American University, Litsong Lu

Open Access Master's Theses

Review of literature suggests that studies of coping strategies used by international students in their cross cultural adjustment were needed. Using interview and qualitative methodology, this study investigated the coping strategies of 24 international students from Taiwan at a small university on the northeast coast of the United States of America. A personally administered questionnaire was developed and used to obtain the demographic information and the cross-cultural adjustment experience. A in-depth interview was conducted to gather more details. The data was coded and analyzed qualitatively. The results are presented in major categories including individual problem-solving, information-seeking, support-seeking and inaction (attentive …

Assessment Of Maternal Interaction Style As A Precursor To Attachment, Maria Schiller Jan 1992

Assessment Of Maternal Interaction Style As A Precursor To Attachment, Maria Schiller

Open Access Master's Theses

Maternal interaction style (often conceived as sensitivity) and security of attachment have long been considered to have an important relationship (Ainsworth et al., 1978; Grossmann et al., 1985; Belsky Rovine, and Taylor,1984; Isabella and Belsky,1991). However, the construct of maternal sensitivity is not consistently defined or measured in the literature. Using videotaped data of 33 mother-infant dyads, we identified the relevant components of maternal sensitivity as related to attachment outcomes. Data consisted of (1) six weekly naturalistic observations of free-play interaction in the home at 6 month and again at 9 months of age (i.e. 12 assessments for each dyad); …

Mill Preservation In The Blackstone River Valley, George Daniel Meservey Iii Jan 1992

Mill Preservation In The Blackstone River Valley, George Daniel Meservey Iii

Open Access Master's Theses

This document describes a project which evaluated industrial mills along the Blackstone River in Rhode Island, built between 1793 and 1910, in order to prioritize their potential for renovation/ reuse. Scores of textile mills built before 1910 still exist in the Blackstone River Valley. Some have been retro-fitted for contemporary use. Many are vacant and not maintained.

Structures were evaluated based on their historical and cultural significance and the physical condition of the existing structure. Findings also include sections on the problems associated with mill reuse and some common adaptive reuse options. Some of the successful mill-renovation projects may serve …

Thanks to Dr. John Kupa for making me appreciate the environment, and for being a guiding force in my decision to go into planning. I am grateful to Kevin Flynn for his guidance in applying this project to the City of Cranston, for giving me a realistic view of the …

Evaluation Of Potential Wildlife Habitat In Created And Restored Freshwater Wetlands In Selected New England States, Staci Rae Holcombe Jan 1992

Evaluation Of Potential Wildlife Habitat In Created And Restored Freshwater Wetlands In Selected New England States, Staci Rae Holcombe

Open Access Master's Theses

In the past, wetlands were considered to be a nuisance. They were thought of as sources of mosquitoes and places of disease. The environmental awakening of the late 1960' s and early 1970' s changed the negative view of wetlands and brought about a host of wetland protection laws, programs, and agencies directed toward wetland protection.

Today, many of the wetland protection legislations (e.g., Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection, etc ... ), require a permit to alter a wetland. In efforts to stop any further net loss of wetlands, regulating agencies are allowing permit …
