A Comparative Analysis Of Human Skeletal Remains From Parowan Fremont, Virgin Anasazi, And Kayenta Anasazi Archaeological Sites, Heidi Roberts
A Comparative Analysis Of Human Skeletal Remains From Parowan Fremont, Virgin Anasazi, And Kayenta Anasazi Archaeological Sites, Heidi Roberts
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Human skeletal remains from the prehistoric Parowan Fremont, Virgin Anasazi, and Kayenta Anasazi cultural traditions are examined, to quantify differences in skeletal parameters and burial practices. Statistical comparisons show no significant differences in skeletal metric traits among the 125 individuals studied; While most individuals examined were healthy, the prevalence of periostitis, osteitis, and linear enamel hypoplasia was found to be highest among Virgin Anasazi individuals. Two other pathologies, porotic hyperostosis and cribra orbitalia, were most common among the Kayenta sample and least among the Parowan Fremont sample; From literature review and new data, much variability was found in mortuary practices. …

The Complicated Web: Mediating Cultures In The Works Of Louise Erdrich, P. Jane Hafen
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Louise Erdrich is a mixed blood Turtle Mountain Chippewa, educated in the dominant culture. Her volumes of poetry, Jacklight and Baptism of Desire, express a personal and narrative voice that reflects her tribal, European, Catholic, and educational heritage. Her well received novels, co-authored with her husband, Michael Dorris, are poetic in their language. Love Medicine and Tracks abound in myth, irony, humor, and contemporary Chippewa issues. The Beet Queen and The Crown of Columbus, incorporate Euroamerican settings and characters while disclosing Native American characteristics of oral rhetoric and tribal community. The trickster archetype in Erdrich's works incorporates survival humor, moral …

Perceived And Actual Level Of Knowledge Of Diabetes Among Medical-Surgical Nurses, Patricia Helen Hess
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was three fold: To survey the level of perceived and actual knowledge of diabetes mellitus among medical-surgical nurses, to investigate the relationship of perceived to actual knowledge of diabetes, and to identify factors that affect nurses' level of perceived and actual knowledge of diabetes mellitus. Tools used to gather data were the Demographic Data Sheet (DDS), Diabetes Self-Report Tool (DSRT), and Diabetes Basic Knowledge Test (DBKT). The DSRT measured the perceived knowledge of medical surgical nurses. The DSRT revealed a mean score of 67.5 points indicating that the subjects had a moderately high level of …

The Cult Of Culture: An Analysis And Plan For Teaching About Organizational Culture, James E Mason
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Five general themes are prevalent in the literature of organizational culture: Meaning, structure, language, stability/instability, and reification. This thesis gives a broad general overview of the concept of culture as it relates to communication, analyzes the literature in terms of the above, and makes suggestions for its use to develop in students an understanding and appreciation of the concept of organizational culture. A prescriptive reading plan and a teaching plan are included to allow teachers to select topics that have importance either for themselves or their students.

Attitudes Toward International Harmonization Efforts: A Cross-Cultural Study., M. Aileen Smith
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The last two decades have seen a significant increase in the number and size of multinational corporations and a growing global investment environment. Linked to that growth has been a call for standards that produce accounting information that is capable of crossing national boundaries. One of the groups of professional elites that have addressed the call for harmonized international accounting standards is the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC). The IASC objective (IASC 1988, 1) states that it will "work generally for the improvement and harmonization of regulations, accounting standards and procedures ... " To address such a goal, the IASC …
Impact Of The Preservice Field Experience In Foreign Language Teaching: A Study Of The Development Of Preservice Teachers' Perspectives In Foreign Language Teaching. (Volumes I And Ii)., Denise Egea-Kuehne
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Within the broader issue of teacher education, the focus of this study is on one of the most neglected areas of inquiry in the field of foreign languages, the preservice field experience, and the development of student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching. The following questions were specifically addressed: (1) What perspectives of foreign language teaching do student teachers hold upon completion of their program of university courses? (2) Is there an alteration of student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching during their student teaching semester? (3) What factors appear to influence student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching during …
Cultural Studies And The Multicultural Curriculum., Mary Susan Huddleston Edgerton
Cultural Studies And The Multicultural Curriculum., Mary Susan Huddleston Edgerton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although some of the most recent work in the field of multicultural education has acknowledged and begun to theorize about what has been called the new cultural politics of difference, problems concerning the very notions of marginality, boundaries, and their accompanying "essentialist" thought remain undertheorized. It is my intention to bring discussions about marginality and essentialism from literary theory, feminist psychoanalytic theory and poststructuralist philosophy more explicitly into the conversation about multicultural curriculum theorizing. In this study I have attempted to further develop this conversation around notions of "translation" as generated by philosophers Michel Serres (1982) and John Rajchmann (1991) …
Making The Secular Sacred: An Analysis Of Linguistic Devices Used To Give Religious Perspective To Ordinary Events., Wayne Porter Gregory
Making The Secular Sacred: An Analysis Of Linguistic Devices Used To Give Religious Perspective To Ordinary Events., Wayne Porter Gregory
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
It has been suggested that human beings do not possess social reality so much as they actively and cooperatively construct it by means of language in interaction with others. The manipulation of symbols, the creation of inferences, the posturing of one's personal identity all work together to enable participants (both speakers and hearers) in a given speech event to create social reality and reaffirm and maintain their social relationships. In religious speech communities, like the one investigated in this study, participants seek to create a different kind of social reality--one that encompasses all of the individual and corporate experiences of …
Detecting The Scale And Resolution Effects In Remote Sensing And Gis., Changyong Cao
Detecting The Scale And Resolution Effects In Remote Sensing And Gis., Changyong Cao
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the relationship between resolution and fractal dimensions of remotely sensed images. Based on the results of testing for the reliability of the algorithms on hypothetical surfaces, the isarithm algorithm is selected for determining the fractal dimensions of remotely sensed images. This algorithm is then applied to simulated fractal Brownian motion images and four calibrated airborne multispectral remotely sensed image data sets with different true and artificial resolutions for Puerto Rico. The results from applying the fractal method to images at different levels of resolution suggest that the higher the resolution of an image, the higher the fractal …

The Theatre Of Religion: Jimmy Swaggart Within American Myth Discourse., Terry Grant Byars
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study explores the myth of the self-made man in American popular culture and how Jimmy Swaggart, the renowned televangelist, manipulates this myth in representing himself as an American hero. Central to such inquiry is Swaggart's use of theatrical device in promoting his heroism. Three fundamental questions provide the focus for investigation: (1) How in general does the creation of myth serve the needs of culture? (2) How specifically does the myth of self-made-ness benefit American culture? and (3) How is Swaggart able to participate in this powerful myth (especially using theatrical modes) in order to gain cultural sanction? In …

Common Sense In Formation For The Common Good - Justice White's Dissents In The Parochial School Aid Cases: Patron Of Lost Causes Or Precursor Of Good News, John J. Coughlin

This Article envisions a new order for public education in this country. Pursuant to the new order, a free market under appropriate government regulation rather than unchecked political authority would determine the flow of public aid to various schools. Such an order would enable parents to choose what kind of school, secular or sectarian, presents the most desirable educational environment. The new arrangement would also provide incentives for quality education, as schools now run by the state government would have to compete on an even field with schools that currently receive no public funds.

Christianity And 'Other Religions': Contributions From The Work Of F. Max, Ronald Neufeldt
Christianity And 'Other Religions': Contributions From The Work Of F. Max, Ronald Neufeldt
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
The history of Christian Thought in the West is not notable for its efforts to come to grips with the claims of other religious traditions, except for the purpose of proselyizatioin, i.e. the concern to save souls. The attitude taken by Christian Churches toward other religions has often been labelled as exclusivism. In its extreme form its attitude has found expression in the assertion that among all peoples of the world, Christians alone have a corner on the truth.
Speaking Of Rights, Janet Ainsworth
Speaking Of Rights, Janet Ainsworth
Faculty Articles
Professor Janet Ainsworth reviews Rights Talk: The Impoverishment of Political Discourse, by Mary Ann Glendon. The thesis of Mary Ann Glendon's book is a provocative one: that the way in which Americans talk about rights is dangerous to our political and social well-being as a nation. Professor Ainsworth explores the specifics of rights discourse that Glendon describes, and provides a thorough critique of Rights Talk.

Interpreting Sacred Texts: Preliminary Reflections On Constitutional Discourse In China, Janet Ainsworth
Interpreting Sacred Texts: Preliminary Reflections On Constitutional Discourse In China, Janet Ainsworth
Faculty Articles
The 1982 Constitution of the People's Republic of China provides the foundation for a nation governed by the rule of law rather than by Party fiat. It remains unclear whether and to what extent this ambitious Constitution will be implemented in practice. In her article, Professor Ainsworth asserts that the way in which Western scholars to date analyzed Chinese constitutions demonstrates the ethnocentric assumptions inherent in Western scholarship. Professor Ainsworth suggests that Chinese constitutional discourse needs to be understood in a Chinese context, requiring a historical study of the traditional Chinese exegetical methodology used in interpreting the Confucian Classics. This …
The Commons: New Perspectives On Nonprofit Organization, Voluntary Action And Philanthropy, Roger A. Lohmann
The Commons: New Perspectives On Nonprofit Organization, Voluntary Action And Philanthropy, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
There is emerging broad agreement among social, political and economic sciences that the institutions of modern society can be divided into three sectors: state, market and the awkwardly named “third sector”, but there is little agreement on the nature of the latter. This book details commons theory as a theoretical basis for understanding both the third sector and the organizations and institutions of which it is composed. In the first chapter, a number of existing perspectives on nonprofit organizations and voluntary action are examined. Chapter Two proposes the commons theory emerging from Hardin’s tragedy of the commons as a potential …
