The Lost Tribalism Of Years Gone By: Function & Variation In Gay Folklore In Armistead Maupin's Tales Of The City Novels, Jimmy Browning May 1992

The Lost Tribalism Of Years Gone By: Function & Variation In Gay Folklore In Armistead Maupin's Tales Of The City Novels, Jimmy Browning

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis intends to demonstrate that, because of the unusual circumstances of its writing - a semi-journalistic piece produced during a period of crisis in the real-life community fictionally depicted - Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City series stands as an unusually accurate and reliable ethnographic source for information concerning the gay male subculture of San Francisco in the late 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, not only the practice and behavior themselves, but also reflecting their personal and communal function. The methodology employed in demonstrating this thesis is necessarily subjective. Like gay folklore scholar Joseph P. Goodwin in More Man Than …

The Unbearable Heaviness Of Politics: Milan Kundera On Aesthetics, Being And Political Consciousness, Sidney S. Fazio May 1992

The Unbearable Heaviness Of Politics: Milan Kundera On Aesthetics, Being And Political Consciousness, Sidney S. Fazio

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The work of Czech novelist Milan Kundera provides some interesting philosophical and aesthetic reflections upon the nature of human existence. Kundera strives to make concrete discoveries about human experiences through his novels. The role of the novel in revealing concrete existence presents one with a unique means to ponder political questions. Kundera's aesthetic and political philosophy arises from his distinct world view and aesthetic theory, based on three overarching premises, which insist that the most important goals for a novelist (or anyone) are: to make discoveries about existence; to ask questions without offering answers; and to express the fundamental ambiguity …

Beyond Liberalism And Its Critics: An Essay In Constitutional Theory, Marcus Faro De Castro May 1992

Beyond Liberalism And Its Critics: An Essay In Constitutional Theory, Marcus Faro De Castro

Dalhousie Law Journal

Contemporary legal culture spends a great deal of energy in generating arguments about constitutional law. Typically, such arguments concern the determination of the content of constitutional clauses which define the meaning and extension of governmental powers, individual rights and civil liberties, the allocations of power among different departments of government, or among local and supra-local spheres of government, and so forth.

Restoring A Historic Costume Facility To A Proper Functional Level, Janet A. Gatch

Honors Theses

Using my past experience in historic costume preservation, written resources, and the knowledge of those interested in this area of clothing & textiles, museum studies, and costume research, I hope to transform the state of the historic costume facility in Quigley Hall to one that's organized, utilizes proper storage techniques, and is available for use by both faculty and students. As a result of this reorganization, I also hope to have the opportunity to share this learned knowledge with the students and faculty of the Clothing & Textiles Department through some formal means.

Affirmative Action And Utility Theory, Jennifer J. Clark May 1992

Affirmative Action And Utility Theory, Jennifer J. Clark

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Blacks have been discriminated against for many decades in the United States. In 1964, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was created to eliminate discrimination in hiring practices. Affirmative action plans were later implemented to create equity in places of employment. Both affirmative action and the EEOC were designed to create equality of the races and eliminate racial tension in the United States.

A Critique Of "The Mormon Concept Of God, A Philosophical Analysis", Kyle Robson May 1992

A Critique Of "The Mormon Concept Of God, A Philosophical Analysis", Kyle Robson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The nature of deity through out the history of philosophy has always been a subject of debate, from some of the earliest writings, philosophers and theologians have given arguments for and against the existence and nature of God. Beckwith and Parrish, in "The Mormon Concept Of God, A Philosophical Analysis," add another page to this on-going debate with their attack of the "Mormon concept of God." In the introduction Beckwith and Parrish explain that it is their aim to show

(1) that the Mormon concept of God differs radically from the classical concept of God,

(2) that the Mormon concept …

Towards A Revision Of The History Of Southern Plains-New Mexico Relations: Lipan Apaches And Southern Plains Ecology, 1500-1720, William Carter

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study argues that the history of the sixteenth and seventeenth century Southern Plains-New Mexico region can be significantly revised if approached from an epistemology founded on William James's doctrine of radical empiricism. Such an epistemology seeks out empirical data and interpretations of that data from a variety of disciplines, and by casting a wider net, empirically and metahistorically, provides for a "more true" conception of the past. It is argued that previous interpretations of this history have missed a larger understanding of changes occurring in the region due to a variety of limiting perspectives, which has included interpretations imbued …
