Courts And Cultural Distinctiveness, Marie R. Deveney
Courts And Cultural Distinctiveness, Marie R. Deveney
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The claim that minority ethnic and religious groups are culturally distinct from the dominant society is often, either implicitly or explicitly, a key element of demands these groups make to courts and legislatures for accommodation of their needs. In such cases, the decision maker's understanding of what constitutes "cultural distinctiveness" is crucial, for it can strongly influence the outcome of the accommodation question. In this brief Essay related to Peter Welsh's and Joseph Carens's papers and Dean Suagee's remarks delivered at the Preservation of Minority Cultures Symposium, I contrast these panelists' subtle and sophisticated understandings of cultural distinctiveness with the …

Introduction, Joseph L. Sax
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Reading through the articles in this Symposium is like walking deep into a dense forest. The experience is exhilarating but edged by a concern that the farther you go, the less sure you are of where you are. The articles here reveal the problem of cultural preservation in all its complexity and many-sidedness. This is not one of those symposia where the authors seek to outdo each other in self-condemnation for the wrongs perpetrated by colonial invaders on hapless indigenous people. Neither is it a lament for the assault on science by advocates of modish multiculturalism. The essays here are …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The rich heritage of agricultural and biological research and teaching on the Davis campus of the University of California is reflected in its vast holdings of scientific collections of living and nonliving preserved biological materials. More recently, as the campus expanded, important collections were developed to support research and educational programs in human and veterinary medicine, anthropology, and geology. A task force reviewed the results of campus-wide surveys and its findings are reported here. Recommendations for future activities are put forth.
The Suburban Rice Farmers: Economic And Cultural Change In Japan, Makoto Chiwaki
The Suburban Rice Farmers: Economic And Cultural Change In Japan, Makoto Chiwaki
Masters Theses
The world economic situation is forcing the Japanese government to initiate policies designed to make its rice farming industry more competitive on the world market. These new policies, along with the growth of Japan's urban areas, are causing certain stresses on the cultural institution called bunke among the part-time rice farmers in the Kaizuka region of Chiba City, Japan.
An ethnographic study of these farmers reveals that the farmers of the Kaizuka region have responded to recent changes differently from the farmers of other regions because of their cultural institutions and traditions.

Monsters Of Antithesis, Melody Leming-Wilson
Monsters Of Antithesis, Melody Leming-Wilson
Anthós Journal (1990-1996)
This paper traces and interrogates the multiple theories of matriarchy that have arisen in recent years and then turns to the Greek myths to show how matriarchies functioned in this literature. The theories of matriarchy often stem from the pre-Hellenic stories of matriarchy shown in Greek myths. In addition, these theories often suggest that the colonizing force of Indo-Europeans changed these myths into patriarchical ones. The Amazonian women can be seen to upset the patriarchal myth in important and interesting ways which suggest a matriarchal underpinning to their society. The question of whether a historical matriarchy actually existed is shown …
