Environmental Factors Influencing Prehistoric Site Selection Along The Portage River, A Tributary Of The St. Joseph River, Southwest Michigan, Timothy D. Knapp
Environmental Factors Influencing Prehistoric Site Selection Along The Portage River, A Tributary Of The St. Joseph River, Southwest Michigan, Timothy D. Knapp
Masters Theses
This study examines the environmental factors influencing the location of prehistoric sites within the Portage River drainage. Over 100 sites recorded during four seasons of archaeological survey are examined applying the following environmental variables: type of glacial deposit, glacial landform, soil, distance to the nearest source of water, distance to the nearest ponded water, and vegetation zones occurring within 100, 500, and 1000 meters. Site locations are then statistically compared with the location of 100 randomly generated loci within the study area.
The findings of this research indicate that sites are non-randomly located with respect to certain environmental variables. Sites …

Screening And Treatment Of Newborns, Ellen Wright Clayton
Screening And Treatment Of Newborns, Ellen Wright Clayton
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
With the advent of new genetic technologies and the Human Genome Initiative, interest in the problems posed by genetic diagnostics in general, and by genetic screening in particular, has surfaced. Many recent works focus on the problems posed by the "new genetics" in the contexts of prenatal diagnosis, carrier detection, employment, and insurance. In the midst of all this discussion, the routine testing of newborns for genetic disorders seems relatively uncomplicated and has, in fact, become "a part of common practice and accepted public policy with little thought having been given to the implications." The relative lack of concern about …
Homeless And Mentally Ill: Meeting The Needs, Donna K. Wilson
Homeless And Mentally Ill: Meeting The Needs, Donna K. Wilson
Student Work
This paper examines the characteristics of homeless mentally ill individuals in a midwest metropolitan area and describes the difficulties they encounter when trying to secure services that would help them change their situation. The study examines the role bureaucracy plays in the social problem of the homeless mentally ill. An ethnographic approach is used to study the question how is it that bureaucracy gets in its own way in attempting to meet the needs of the homeless mentally ill? Both demographic and observational data are provided in this study and the observational data indicate that certain aspects that are inherent …

New Directions : Dewey, Aesthetics, And Psychology, David Clark
Honors Theses
The purpose of this paper is to determine whether psychological information is relevant to solving aesthetic problems. Along the way I will point out that there are disparate senses of the word "psychology" and I will show how John Dewey can be perceived historically as an early contributor to what we now call "cultural psychology", which I believe is a viable alternative to experimental aesthetics.

Child Welfare Law, "Best Interests Of The Child" Ideology, And First Nations, Marlee Kline
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Liberalism has structured legal discourse such that racism is most often unintended and rarely explicit. To understand how and why law has an oppressive and discriminatory impact on First Nations and other racialized groups in Canadian society, one must look at some of its more subtle processes and, in particular, its ideological form. The goal of this article is to provide insight into the origins and operation of "best interests of the child" ideology and to illustrate how it structures and constrains judicial decision making in the context of First Nations child welfare. Best interests ideology serves to portray the …
