In this collection, Julie Fay uses narrative poetry to paint meaningful scenes lifted from history and personal experience to create a work that examines the lives of American women. The first section, entitled “Burlington Homestead,” describes an American family’s struggle to make a place for themselves in nineteenth-century southern Iowa, faced with the challenges of both the physical world and the inner world of personal desire. Part Two, “Sarah’s Story,” is about a young woman’s need to leave her marriage in order to discover herself and her art. Both sections analyze a woman’s role in time and place. Marilyn Hacker …

Scholarly Works

This Note offers a model for analyzing the political and legal traditions of oppressed communities and developing a jurisprudence that accurately reflects the communities' views. Under this model, each of these diverse views can be understood from one of four perspectives: parochialism, fatalism, neo-liberalism, and individualism. These four perspectives are defined by an oppressed community's members' aspirations for liberation. Different ideals of justice and liberation underlie each perspective. Though touching on some of the communities' sentiments, the examinations of scholars of color have thus far been largely piecemeal, overemphasizing certain views, unwittingly combining divergent views, or marginalizing and dismissing unpopular …

This project attempts a structural study of 25 Philippine origin myths primarily following the analytical approach of Claude Levi-Strauss. From a structural perspective, Philippine origin and creation myths deal most frequently with bridging the contradiction between this world and the divine realms of the skyworld and underworld, and the division of male and female. Myths from all major divisions of the archipelago will be analyzed to show how liminal, mediating categories attempt to resolve these contradictions by placing the certain concepts, beings and rituals in anomalous and dangerous or a heightened sacralized state. Oil, modern history’s most “powerful” natural economic resource stood at the epicenter of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and became the latest unconventional weapon of warfare. The objective of this Article is to assess the legal implications of this recent environmental warfare involving the “oil weapon,” the first of its kind in recorded history. The experiences from national and international wars demonstrate one sure victim of wars, even barring human losses, is the environment. The delicacy of mankind’s planetary ecosystem necessitates urgency addressed to protecting the environment in the international struggle for arms control and disarmament agreement. This article synthesizes interdisciplinary scholarship to illuminate the implications of cultural diversity for departmental leadership in communication and performing arts. Through a critical literature review situated against contemporary geopolitical upheaval, the discussion maps the rapid expansion of intercultural communication research, identifies performing arts journals as emergent hubs of intercultural discourse, and problematizes notions of cultural purity. It argues that department chairs occupy a strategic nexus for cultivating multicultural pedagogy, inclusive recruitment, and global curricular integration while navigating organizational culture and resource constraints. Faculty Support Groups Vs. Burnout, Joseph G. Meyers

This article investigates academic burnout through the lens of organizational communication, describing how voluntary faculty support groups mitigate stress and enhance teaching efficacy in higher education. Drawing on qualitative reflection and preliminary survey data, the discussion links role ambiguity, tenure pressure, financial constraints, and unprepared students to declining job satisfaction and classroom performance. Support group participation fosters collegiality, expands informal learning networks, and opens communication channels that reframe stress as manageable challenge. Participants report improved perspective, increased student engagement, and broader campus initiatives such as wellness workshops and mentoring seminars. This article proposes, as a new element of the "liberal internationalism" that should characterize the post-Cold War world, a simultaneous solution to these three problems. The nations of the world should negotiate a series of multilateral agreements to stop the spread of advanced weaponry, and include in each of them, as an overt incentive for developing states to accept the disarmament and verification obligations, provisions that explicitly require the affluent, developed states to make specified monetary and in-kind transfers to the third world parties. The new regime should also provide stronger-than-customary treaty procedures for clarifying ambiguities, adjudicating claims, and resolving …

Immigration And Naturalization Service V. Elias-Zacarias: A Departure From The Past, Bret I. Parker

Fordham International Law Journal

This Comment argues that the standards enunciated by the Supreme Court in Elias-Zacarias should not be applied beyond cases involving persecution on account of political opinion. Part I sets out the relevant statutes, treaties, and international documents that control U.S. asylum law. Part II describes the majority and dissenting opinions in Elias-Zacarias. Part III analyzes the Supreme Court's decision in Elias-Zacarias and argues that the decision was misguided in its approach. This Comment concludes that Elias-Zacarias should be limited in its future application so that the United States can maintain its compliance with international treaty obligations.

Christopher Marlowe created Renaissance drama as we think of it today. Marlowe's princely protagonists are studied here not as sovereigns responsible for the general well-being of their subjects, but as ambitious characters who use power to control their personal environment. Seen from this viewpoint, the dramatic function of the central characters is either to develop a new stance toward the idea of public authority or to refashion an old one. Instead of attending to governance, they attempt to encompass all existence within themselves: Tamburlaine the world conqueror; Edward and Dido, public rulers whose private relationships transform their public positions; the …

In this Article, the author addresses the question of whether Iraq's destruction of Kuwaiti oil fields constitutes a violation of the laws of war, particularly with respect to article 53 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, known as the Civilians Convention. After an introductory section evaluating the amount and nature of destruction suffered by the Kuwaiti oil industry, the author discusses whether article 53 covers destruction of state-owned oil fields. Although the specific language of the article appears to favor coverage, the history behind article 53 suggests that it protects property of a sort different than the state-owned property destroyed by …
