Zuckmayer At The Berliner Ensemble, William Grange Oct 1990

Zuckmayer At The Berliner Ensemble, William Grange

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

When the Berliner Ensemble at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm stages a production of Carl Zuckmayer's Der Hauptmann von Köpenick, one can without reservation conclude that enormous changes are indeed taking place in Germany. That statement may at first seem disingenuous, but to connoisseurs of footnotes in German theatre history, few developments could rival this latest evidence of reconciliation along political, cultural, and especially theatrical lines. Theatre and politics have a long history of close association in Germany, and no theatre has been more politically conscious than the Berliner Ensemble. Brecht was, as "his" Berliner Ensemble subsequently became, an advertisement for …

New Concepts Of Professional Expertise: Liberal Learning As Part Of A Career-Oriented Education, Ernest Lynton Oct 1990

New Concepts Of Professional Expertise: Liberal Learning As Part Of A Career-Oriented Education, Ernest Lynton

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

The nature of the expertise needed in most professions and higher level occupations is broadening because of changing organization and content of work. Today, a competent practitioner must be more than a narrow specialist. Curricular reviews aimed at ensuring liberal learning should abandon the false dichotomy between career-oriented and liberal education and begin by reexamining and broadening the major.

After The Revolt: A Framework For Fiscal Recovery, Joseph S. Slavet, Raymond G. Torto Oct 1990

After The Revolt: A Framework For Fiscal Recovery, Joseph S. Slavet, Raymond G. Torto

McCormack Graduate School General Publications (active until 2013)

Despite the injection of new taxes in the amount of $1 .2 billion in fiscal 1991, and recently announced cuts in the budget of approximately $464 million, the Commonwealth's fiscal condition - irrespective of the outcome of CLT's petition -is precarious. Although the political juices are flowing in Massachusetts, with an eye on November 6th, Massachusetts decision-makers have not faced up to the problems inherent in the long-term, structural spending patterns of the state's budget.

Our five-year budget projection indicates that if expenditure trends continue without dramatic restructuring - particularly in the "non-discretionary" accounts - the Commonwealth faces a steady …

Dna Mapping Algorithms: The Dna Simulator, Will Gillet, John Heidemann Oct 1990

Dna Mapping Algorithms: The Dna Simulator, Will Gillet, John Heidemann

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This report documents the intent and use of a suite of programs for simulating the production of DNA restriction fragment data, as might come from the biological laboratory doing work in DNA mapping. This suite includes programs for (a) creating a random strand of DNA, (b) creating random clones given a strand of DNA, (c) taking a clone and applying a restriction enzyme to create restriction fragments, and (d) creating a nucleotide map of how the clones relate to one another within the original DNA strand. Besides this fundamental software, there are a number of a programs for introducing different …

Highly Concurrent Logically Synchronous Multicast, Kenneth J. Goldman Oct 1990

Highly Concurrent Logically Synchronous Multicast, Kenneth J. Goldman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We define the logically synchronous multicast problem, which imposes a natural and useful structure on message delivery order in an asynchronous system. In this problem, a computation proceeds by a sequence of multicasts, in which a process sends a message to some arbitrary subset of the processes, including itself. A logically synchronously multicast protocol must make it appear to every process as if each multicast occurs simultaneously at all participants of that multicast (sender plus receivers). Furthermore, if a process continually wishes to sends a message, it must eventually be permitted to do so. We present a highly concurrent solution …

Book Review - Reviewing S. Prakash Sinha, What Is Law? (1989), Stephen R. Alton Oct 1990

Book Review - Reviewing S. Prakash Sinha, What Is Law? (1989), Stephen R. Alton

Faculty Scholarship

Book Review Extract:

The title of S.P. Sinha's book, What Is Law?, is somewhat deceptive, for the author ambitiously tries to do more than merely define the concept of law in well under 300 pages. After the introductory historical and philosophical overview of his initial chapter, Sinha uses the balance of his book to summarize the major theories of law, including how law arises, how it is applied, and why it is important in society. The work is less of an original attempt by its writer to answer the question posed by the title than it is an effort to …

Book Review - Reviewing John Eidsmoe, Christianity And The Constitution: The Faith Of Our Founding Fathers (1987), Stephen R. Alton Oct 1990

Book Review - Reviewing John Eidsmoe, Christianity And The Constitution: The Faith Of Our Founding Fathers (1987), Stephen R. Alton

Faculty Scholarship

Book Review Extract:

Judging by its title, John Eidsmoe's Christianity and the Constitution: The Faith of Our Founding Fathers, appears to promise an historical look at the religious beliefs and backgrounds of America's founders. It does that - and more-with mixed results. To be sure, there is some good in this book: to the extent that it sticks to its nominal purpose and attempts to document the religious beliefs of some of this nation's founding fathers, Eidsmoe's work is useful.

Unfortunately, both the author's scholarship and his motives in writing this book are questionable. His scholarship suffers from his tendency …

Education, Autonomy, And Civic Virtue, Richard Dagger Oct 1990

Education, Autonomy, And Civic Virtue, Richard Dagger

Political Science Faculty Publications

The major cause of our crisis in education is lack of agreement on the purpose of education. We can agree on what that purpose is, Richard Dagger argues. if we define it as the promotion of autonomy and civic virtue. Autonomy and civic virtue are often taken to be incompatible because one has to do with individual liberty and the other with collective responsibility. Dagger shows that the charge of incompatibility does not hold up under analysis. The two terms are, rather, complementary.
