The Schiller Centennial: 1859 — Some Themes And Motifs, Jeffrey L. Sammons Oct 1990

The Schiller Centennial: 1859 — Some Themes And Motifs, Jeffrey L. Sammons

University of Dayton Review

On November 10. 1859, the fledgling writer Wilhelm Raabe recited a sincerely bombastic poem at the celebration of Schiller's hundredth birthday in WoIfenbüttel. Eleven or twelve years later, at the time of the founding of the Reich, he was to take a more ironic view of the occasion in his comic political novel Der Dräumling. However, his skepticism about the motives and the alleged unanimity of the celebration did not extend to the significance of the centennial itself. Although his narrator spares us the droning speeches, he allows us to hear from the end of one of them: "Er …

The Religious Function Of Ideas: A Retrospective On Carl Becker’S Heavenly City, Ken Schurb Oct 1990

The Religious Function Of Ideas: A Retrospective On Carl Becker’S Heavenly City, Ken Schurb

University of Dayton Review

Recent times have seen a lively debate over secularism. Is it a religion? Can it be religious? Secularism is nothing new in America. Lecturing at Yale in 1931, the Cornell University historian and literary craftsman Carl Becker painted a stark picture of the prevailing "climate of opinion" in his own day. He spoke as a modem and a relativist. Later that year, in fact, he delivered his famous presidential address to the American Historical Association, "Everyman His Own Historian." But at Yale Becker went on to propose a breathtaking thesis about the period which many people consider the first flower …

Herzog Albrecht Der Weise Als Vermittler Im Streit Um Das Württembergische Erbe Der Barbara Da Gonzaga 1505, Axel Jurgen Behne

University of Dayton Review

The Future Of An Allusion, Terry Caesar Oct 1990

The Future Of An Allusion, Terry Caesar

University of Dayton Review

Dead writers, wrote Eliot in "Tradition and the Individual Talent," "are that which we know." We know them directly by a wide variety of means. We cite them, paraphrase, imitate, parody, plagarize them, and we allude to them. But how direct is our knowledge? My concern in this paper will be with the last of these modes, allusion, and I want to ask precisely how it attests to our knowledge to have a passing or indirect reference to something outside a literary text made within one.

The Poet’S Married Lot: Kenneth Rexroth’S “Marthe” Poems, Donald Gutierrez Oct 1990

The Poet’S Married Lot: Kenneth Rexroth’S “Marthe” Poems, Donald Gutierrez

University of Dayton Review

Though Kenneth Rexroth wrote quite a few splendid love poems, not many of them are finer than the seven loosely sequenced love verses with which his book In Defense of the Earth opens. These poems—once called the "Marthe" poems (and called so in this essay for convenience)—are distinguished by, among other things, the character of their representation of married love and its complications. The "Marthe" poems were originally addressed to Marthe Larsen, Rexroth's third wife. The seven poems were written in the mid-1950s during a period of considerable marital stress between the Rexroths. One San Francisco newspaper (The San Francisco …

The Flight From Nature In Hamlin Garland’S Rose Of Dutcher’S Coolly, Micheal Clark Oct 1990

The Flight From Nature In Hamlin Garland’S Rose Of Dutcher’S Coolly, Micheal Clark

University of Dayton Review

In Rose of Dutcher's Coolly, Hamlin Garland has produced a portrait of a woman's growth and development. This novel is Garland's attempt to look unflinchingly at Rose's nature, at her moral condition, and by extension, at every human's situation. But in writing this book, Garland was confronted with complexities and uncertainties which demanded resolution. Like many other writers of his time, Garland was drawn to the problems presented by sexuality. He understood that biology could limit human potential. In the course of his narrative, he shows Rose Dutcher grappling with this problem, ultimately resolving it at the conclusion of …

Science Or Superstition? Balzac’S Diagnosis Of Illness, Marsha Terry Winter Oct 1990

Science Or Superstition? Balzac’S Diagnosis Of Illness, Marsha Terry Winter

University of Dayton Review

Balzac diagnoses illness in La Comédie humaine by combining medical facts and pseudoscientific fiction. Malady's physiologic and psychologic aspects blend to exert a reciprocal effect on each other, resulting in malady that is neither exclusively physical nor mental in origin. La pensée ultimately determines a character's corporeal and emotional well-being. The Balzacian thought mechanism is Janus-faced, having either deleterious or benevolent consequences according to the use the character makes of it. The importance of the thought mechanism, in Balzacian malady, goes beyond the traditional 19th-century view of illness: "Les maladies se révèlent à la simple observation par un état de …
