Review Of Philippa Berry, Of Chastity And Power: Elizabethan Literature And The Unmarried Queen, Carole Levin Oct 1990

Review Of Philippa Berry, Of Chastity And Power: Elizabethan Literature And The Unmarried Queen, Carole Levin

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Phillippa Berry has written a solidly researched and ambitious study of the impact of Elizabeth I and the cult of the Virgin Queen on Elizabethan literature. Berry's stated goal is to clarify contradictory relations of gender in the discourses of idealized love of Petrarchan love poetry and Neoplatonic philosophy, which so much influenced Renaissance literature. Berry wishes to explore the interrelationship between the love discourses and the cult of Elizabeth. As her title suggest, Berry is concerned to examine a number of literary texts that intertwine issues of sexual and political power. She argues that in sixteenth-century France as well …

The Frat Volume 88 Number 01 September - October 1990, The National Fraternal Society Of The Deaf (Nfsd)

1981-1990

The Frat was the official member publication of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf (NFSD). First established in 1902, the publication ran for just over a century, until its closure in 2006.---NFSD was an insurance business established in 1901. Its purposes were to provide insurance to mainly Deaf members, to serve as an advocate for the Deaf, and to provide community service and recreational opportunities through divisional activities. The existing insurance coverage was transferred to the Catholic Order of Foresters in 2005. The NFSD disbanded in 2007.---The Frat's main purpose was to keep members apprised of the activities of …

Bloodtaking And Peacemaking - Feud, Law And Society In Saga Iceland, William Ian Miller Oct 1990

Bloodtaking And Peacemaking - Feud, Law And Society In Saga Iceland, William Ian Miller

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

In his newest book, published by University of Chicago Press in August, Professor Miller continues to throw open the world of Old Norse studies to interested readers, delving beneath the Vikings' world of brutality and chaos to expose a deeper struggle for social equilibrium. His examination of ancient Iceland's sagas and legal code sheds light on the society that produced them and reveals how the culture of the feud central to this stateless society, was driven by the related norms of honor, reciprocity and balance.

The selections that follow are from the prologue and conclusion of Bloodtaking and Peacemaking.

Detention Without Trial In The Second World War: Comparing The British And American Experiences, A. W. Brian Simpson Oct 1990

Detention Without Trial In The Second World War: Comparing The British And American Experiences, A. W. Brian Simpson

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

My interest in the detention of citizens, without trial, in Britain during the war of 1939-1945 arose as a byproduct of a more general interest. The study of cases has long been central to the common law tradition. But the legal dramas we examine so minutely are too often both contextless and dehumanized. Real people assume the masks of the law, becoming plaintiffs and defendants, offerors and offerees, grantors and contingent remainderpersons, concealed from us by the forms into which their problems have been packaged for legal analysis. Two English leading cases, decided by the House of Lords on November …

Schnitzler In The Popular American Press, 1904-33, Jo Anne C. Ellis Oct 1990

Schnitzler In The Popular American Press, 1904-33, Jo Anne C. Ellis

University of Dayton Review

Mention Arthur Schnitzler to the average well-read American, and the response is likely to be "Who?" Even one who has studied German at some point is probably only familiar with a very few of his works. Would the same person have fared better during the first third of this century, while the author was still alive and actively creating stories and plays? I think the answer is "yes," but not because of any familarity with the translations in book form.
