Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are crucial to the ability of govern mental agencies and business to record, manage and analyze geographic data efficiently. They provide methods of analysis and simulation on geographic data that were previously infeasible using traditional hardcopy maps. Creation of realistic 3-D sceneries by overlaying satellite imagery over digital elevation models (DEM) was not possible using paper maps. Determination of suitable areas for construction that would have the fewest environmental impacts once required manual tracing of different map sets on mylar sheets; now it can be done in real time by GIS. Exploiting Implicit Parallelism In Sparc Instruction Execution, Todd Michael Austin

One way to increase the performance of a processing unit is to exploit implicit parallelism. Exploiting this parallelism requires a processor to dynamically select instructions in a serial instruction stream which can be executed in parallel. As operations are computed concurrently, an execution speedup will occur. This thesis studies how effectively implicit parallelism could be exploited in the Scalable Pro cessor Architecture (SPARC)[9], a reduced instruction set architecture developed by Sun Microsystems. The analysis and simulation of the motion of a digitally-controlled digital imaging system is presented. The dynamic system consists of a scanning carriage, power transmission elements, a prime mover, and a control subsystem. The prime mover is a permanent magnet DC motor that is positioned by a direct digital control system. The scan carriage motion is mathematically modeled and simulated using ACSL and DADS simulation software. T he simulation results are compared to empirical data. Jerald F. Simon writes about Thomas Bullock's life in relation to the effect he had on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as given in Bullock's own journals and diaries. Bullock, born in England, immigrated to the United States and quickly found himself employed as a clerk for Joseph Smith, the Nauvoo Masonic Lodge, and steamboat Maid of Iowa, among several other positions. Bullock also worked closely with Brigham Young. He followed the church from Nauvoo to Winter Quarters and into the Great Salt Lake Valley and was pivotal in the beginnings of Deseret News.

Chemical Dynamics In North Sea Estuaries And Plumes, Andrew Turner

Observational and experimental studies have been undertaken in the southern North Sea environment, including five major estuaries (Humber, Thames, Scheldt, Weser and Elbe), with the aim of elucidating the mechanistic and kinetic details of trace metal reactivity required for the refinement of pollutant transport models. The results of a systematic investigation of suspended particle characteristics (BET specific surface area and porosity, carbon content. Fe and Mn oxide coatings) indicated that, although there exists significant yet explicable variability among the North Sea estuaries, such compositional factors do not exert an observable influence on solid-solution interactions. The in vitro and in situ immune responses of carp Cyprinus carpio to Ichthyophthirius multifiliis were investigated in order to characterise the immune mechanisms involved in protection. 'O' group and adult carp were immunised against I.multifiliis by controlled infection procedures. Sterile immunity was not achieved; theronts were observed to penetrate the skin of immunised fish, although in the majority of cases this did not lead to successful trophozoite establishment. It was concluded that most parasites prematurely exited the epidermis of immunised fish within two hours of penetration as an active survival strategy. Trophozoites remaining in immunised fish beyond two hours …

Previous studies indicate that many preservice science teachers lack facility with those formal reasoning patterns that are critical for learning science. The purpose of this project was to develop, implement and evaluate a curriculum package directed at improving preservice secondary science teachers' scientific thinking. A matched treatment-control, quasi-experimental design revealed significant gains achieved through use of the curriculum materials.

Children's classroom success has been attributed to a variety of factors (Watts, 1975). Among these factors are the quality and number of interactions occurring between the teacher and the students (Brophy and Good, 1974). Students who attract a greater proportion of the teacher's time and experience more positive interactions are more likely to be successful than other students. Additionally it has been argued (McKessar and Thomas, 1978) that some students may have greater expertise in capturing a teacher's attention, that is, by initiating interactions, while King (1979) considered that students engaged in behaviours which were designed to maintain the teacher's …

A 2L-dimensional multiple phase-shift keyed (L×MPSK) signal set is obtained by forming the Cartesian product of L two-dimensional MPSK signal sets. A systematic approach to partitioning L×MPSK signal sets that is based on block coding is used. An encoder system approach is developed. It incorporates the design of a differential precoder, a systematic convolutional encoder, and a signal set mapper. Trellis-coded L×4PSK, L×8PSK, and L×16PSK modulation schemes are found for 1⩽L⩽4 and a variety of code rates and decoder complexities, many of which are fully transparent to discrete phase rotations of the signal set. Thin film deposition techniques currently being used to produce multilayer x-ray optics (MXOs) have difficulty producing smooth, uniform multilayers with d-spacings less than about twelve angstroms. We are investigating atomic layer epitaxy (ALE) as an alternative to these techniques. ALE is a chemical vapor deposition technique which deposits an atomic layer of material during each cycle of the deposition process. The thickness of a film deposited by ALE depends only on the number of cycles. Multilayers deposited by ALE should be smooth and uniform with precise d-spacings which makes ALE an excellent technique for producing multilayer x-ray optics. We have …

Diffuse Absorbing Beryllium Coatings Produced By Magnetron Sputtering, David D. Allred, C. M. Egert

Beryllium coatings with varying thicknesses and columnar grain sizes were deposited by low temperature magnetron sputtering and wet chemically etched to enhance diffuse absorption of light. After etching these coatings exhibited a matte black surface finish and low specular reflectance (below 2%) in the IR up to a critical wavelength dependent upon the original grain size of the coating. Extremely thick coatings (350 µm) with original grain sizes of 10 to 12 µm were produced which exhibited specular reflectances below 0.5% up to 50 µm wavelength and a Lambertian BRDF at 10.6 µm averaging 4.3x10-3 ster-1. The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of the right side and left side non-linear forearm passing techniques used to receive the serve in volleyball. A subproblem was to determine the extent to which one technique was used among selected Gateway Conference of NCAA Division I universities.

The research design was causal comparative. The study sought to determine the relative effectiveness of the Right-to-Right non-linear and Left-to-Right non-linear serve reception techniques in passing accurately to a prescribed target area.

This article attempts to demonstrate, via the famous Hart-Dworkin debate on the nature and functions of judicial discretion, that substantial jurisprudential disputes as well as theories can, and do, arise from misconceived critiques, whether intended or otherwise. It also seeks to show that, whilst Dworkin's initial critique of Hart was misconceived, his theory of adjudication that arose as a result of responses to his initial views is a positive contribution to learning, although I argue that Dworkin's views are not, in the final analysis, sufficiently persuasive to constitute a radical departure from Hart's own views.

From its rather tentative and extremely recent beginnings, I the law relating to economic duress has developed at a relatively rapid pace during the last decade or so. We have had a series of decisions from various courts and jurisdictions* which, collectively at least, affirm the existence of the doctrine in English law.
