The purpose of this study was to validate the Caltrac Personal Activity Monitor against directly measured energy expenditure (EE) at treadmill speeds and grades of 3 mph, 0%; 3 mph, 8%; 5 mph, 0%; and 6 mph, 0%, with Caltracs located on the dominant hip, non-dominant hip, and the waistband at center back. It was hypothesized that there would be no significant difference between Caltrac Caloric output values (with Caltracs worn at any of the locations) and EE represented by Caloric output calculated from direct oxygen consumption (V02) and respiratory quotient (RQ) measurements from a Beckman metabolic measurement cart (MMC). …

The Piano Sonata in C major, L. 104, by Domenico Scarlatti, is perhaps the best known of Scarlatti's sonatas. It is the only one with a recapitulation which mirrors in each possible detail the parts of the exposition. Small though its proportions are (sixty-six measures), this piece nevertheless contains within 1 t all the essential elements of classical sonata form. The opening subject in C major is followed by a second subject in G major, distinct in its rhythmic and melodic contours from the first. The purpose of this study was to identify those technology assessment (TA) procedures that are most important to teach to missionary trainees. This was based on the perceptions of the chief executive officers of U.S. Protestant mission agencies.

A survey was used to collect the research data. A total of 175 usable survey instruments were returned (25.6%). Analysis of the data consisted of frequency distributions and Chi-square.

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the occupational outcomes of bachelor's degrees earned by individuals when they are 25 years or older, here called nontraditional graduates. The subjects of the study were 212 nontraditional graduates of the University of Northern Iowa. They were randomly selected from a list of individuals who received their college degrees from 1984 to 1988 and who were 25 years old or older at the time they graduated. Also explored was the relationship of sex, age, education level, average number of hours worked per week, total length of employment as a wait staff member, and personal dietary interest to knowledge of nutrition in wait staff. This study investigated the effect of teacher inservice training on their utilization of computer based telecommunications. Eight teachers from a rural sized school district participated in this case study. The teachers were divided into experimental and control groups. Four teachers were assigned to each group. The experimental group attended two 90 minute training sessions on telecommunications and its educational applications. The control group did not receive training until after the study was complete. Both groups logged their telecommunications use over a 6-week period starting immediately after the experimental group attended the first training session. Results of this study indicated a …

There has been limited research which specifically explores the effects of science achievement when teaching thinking skills in isolation to upper elementary students. There are many components of thinking skills; however, the present study deals specifically with the student responsibility aspect of thinking skills. Subjects are fifth- and sixth-grade science students enrolled in a small rural Midwestern school district. Students were divided into classes by the principal. The present study was designed to examine the abilities of normal-hearing (NH) and hearing-impaired (HI) children to repair communication breakdowns utilizing non-primary modalities (writing, drawing , showing, etc.) when listeners did not comprehend their primary mode of communication . The subjects for this study were 8 children with moderate to profound hearing losses. Hearing status for the HI subjects was no better than PTA of 39 dB HL (ANSI, 1969). This recital was performed by Laurie Hoeppner on March 9, 1990 in partial fulfillment of the Master of Music in performance (bassoon) degree. The pieces were representative of various style periods, including Baroque, Classic, and Twentieth Century. Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) was an Italian composer of the baroque era. He learned to play . the violin under his father's instruction, but later turned his attention to vocal and contrapuntal studies. Following his father's wishes, Marcello also pursued a legal career during his lifetime. Marcello's music includes a variety of genres; the Sonata in G Major is typical of his style. The …

This ethnographic study sought to identify language functions present in the dentist-child patient relationship. Specifically, the study identified language functions in the dentist's talk and determined their possible role in comforting the patient. The dentists that participated in this study were from Cedar Falls, Waterloo, and Hudson, Iowa. Five dentists were randomly chosen using the Nth Skip Method. This study sought to discover if a relationship exists between a group leader's communication competency and the outcomes of group interaction. This relationship is hypothesized in a model of leadership proposed by Barge and Hirokawa (1989). Specifically, the study compared a leader's task and relational competency levels with the outcomes of perceived leadership effectiveness, group satisfaction, and group cohesiveness. This research studied groups from recognized student organizations at a midwestern university. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the extent to which instructors incorporated reading- and writing-to-learn skills and strategies into the methods courses of secondary social studies preparation programs. A questionnaire was mailed to the instructors of social studies methods courses at the colleges and universities in Region Four of the Teacher Education Council of State Colleges and Universities organization. The questionnaire requested that the respondents indicate the degree of emphasis that they place on 20 different reading- and writing-to-learn strategies. Sophie Zawistowska, the title character in William Styron's novel Sophie's Choice, has a severe identity problem. She acts as dutiful daughter, unfulfilled spouse, desperate mother, impassioned lover, tragic victim, unquestioning accomplice, and guilt-consumed survivor. Many of these characterizations conflict directly with each other. Sophie also speaks six languages and identifies at various times with speakers of German, Polish, French, Russian, English, and Yiddish, language groups that often conflict, as well. This investigation centers on the impact the computer, as an instrument, has on computer anxiety. Other variables examined were gender, age, academic experience, and computer experience. Eighty-three rural Iowa high school juniors and seniors were administered a Computer Opinion Survey {Maurer & Simonson, 1984) as a measure of computer anxiety. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the leisure lifestyles of rural older adults and specifically to determine whether a relationship existed among leisure lifestyle, perceived social support, and well-being. Control variables included socio-demographic factors, value of leisure, satisfaction with life domains, length of residency, ethnicity, religion, and personal and structural barriers. The ultrastructural features of a new chordotonal sensillum in a cavernicolous Mysidacea is described. That sensillum and the other mechanoreceptor sensilla of the same Mysidacea are compared. 9 + 0 cilia show ultrastructural features which previously allowed us to establish a hypothesis with respect to the mode of functioning of chordotonal sensilla. That sensillum shows a pore at the tip of its external receptor.

Comparative studies on the foraging behaviour of Neaphaenops tellkampfi tellkampfi and N. t. meridionalis demonstrated adaptation to different environments. The southern subspecies N. t. meridionalis, which is found in wet muddy caves where cave cricket eggs are unlikely prey, did not locate buried cricket eggs and dug fewer and less accurate holes in the lab than the nominate subspecies. N. t. tellkampfi, which reaches high densities in sandy deep cave environments where cricket eggs are the only viable prey, gained significantly greater weight than meridionalis when presented buried cricket eggs as prey. Allozyme variation at 32 gene loci was studied in cave dwelling shrimps of the genus Troglocaris (fam. Atyidae). Populations were collected from several caves and wells belonging to different drainage systems in the Karst areas of NE Italy. Results suggest the existence of two sympatric, genetically distinct, biological species (provisionally indicated as species A and B in the T. anophthalmus complex) in the samples collected at the Duino Well, Sagrado and Comarie caves (Nei’s `D= 0.209). Samples from Gradisca and Aurisina are represented by only one (A) or the other (B) of the two species, respectively. Two remaining eastern populations …

School desegregation is not dead. It lives quietly in what used to be the Confederate South. Notwithstanding the Reagan and Bush Administrations' ten-year campaign to limit the legal, remedial, and temporal scope of court-ordered integration plans throughout the nation, desegregation persists in southern rural areas where substantial numbers of black Americans continue to reside and in southern urban areas where school districts were organized in 1970 to encompass not only the inner city but also the suburbs. In writing The Tolerant Society I was, and yet remain, interested in the treatment of speech behavior in this country, a treatment notably more liberal than in other Western democracies. Liberality, however, is not its only surprising or distinguishing hallmark; so too is how the world is characterized under the free speech concept.
