Emotion With Dignity: J.R.R Tolkien And Love, Paul Nolan Hyde

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Uses Tolkien’s letter (#43) of 1941 to his son Michael as a springboard for discussing the alternatives Tolkien presents there—renunciation, physical gratification, friendship, and love. Gives examples of each in Tolkien’s works.

Just Among Friends, Glen H. Goodknight

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Opening address at Mythcon 21, expanded. Uses Lewis’s The Four Loves to open a discussion of friendship within the society, reminding members of the dangers Lewis pointed out, chiefly that of friends “looking at each other”–that is, focusing on “mutual self-approval” to the exclusion of remembering to look “in the direction of our shared interest.”

Theoretical Description Of The Binary Peak In Clothed Ion-Atom Collisions, C. O. Reinhold, Ronald E. Olson Oct 1990

Theoretical Description Of The Binary Peak In Clothed Ion-Atom Collisions, C. O. Reinhold, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The impulse or binary encounter approximation for ion-atom collisions is extended to treat the non-Coulomb interaction between a clothed projectile ion and the target electrons. This model is shown to reproduce the unexplained enhancement of the zero-degree binary peak for partially stripped ions over that for Equi velocity fully stripped ions that has recently been observed experimentally in Fq++H2, He collisions. Very good agreement is obtained between theory and experiment and, furthermore, this model is used to illuminate the underlying dynamics which leads to the observed enhancement. © 1990 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Aggression And Symbols Of Power, Karen Kuhn Oct 1990

Aggression And Symbols Of Power, Karen Kuhn

Theses

Weapons are one of the oldest and most significant forms of artifacts, occurring in virtually all human cultures. Weapons and their technology often determine power structures, not only by brute force of arms, but by long standing respect to ritual aggression. In many cultures, weapons have become abstracted and formalized to become symbols of power and authority, as in a ruler 's scepter, which is a glorified war club. Jewelry functions in much the same manner, proclaiming the social status of the wearer, although in the western world, we have lost most of the symbolic meaning of our jewelry; for …

Scanning Electron Microscopic Analysis Of Mineral Fiber Content Of Lung Tissue In The Evaluation Of Diffuse Pulmonary Fibrosis, Victor L. Roggli Oct 1990

Scanning Electron Microscopic Analysis Of Mineral Fiber Content Of Lung Tissue In The Evaluation Of Diffuse Pulmonary Fibrosis, Victor L. Roggli

Scanning Microscopy

The mineral fiber content of lung parenchyma in 24 cases of diffuse pulmonary fibrosis of unknown cause was determined by scanning electron microscopy and compared with that of 36 autopsy cases of histologically confirmed asbestosis and 20 autopsy cases of patients with normal lungs . Fibers were isolated from the lung using a hypochlorite digestion technique and collected on the surface of a polycarbonate filter. In addition, the types of fibers present (asbestos vs. other mineral fibers) were determined by energy dispersive x - ray analysis (EDXA). When the histologic grade of fibrosis in the cases of asbestosis was compared …

The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports statistics on criminal victimization for 1989 from the National Crime Survey, which measures personal and household offenses, including crimes not reported to police. The Alaska Sentencing Commission, created to evaluate Alaska’s sentencing laws and practices and to recommend improvements, begins its work.
