Les Coûts Indirects Des Accidents Du Travail, Bernard Brody, Yves Létourneau, André Poirier Jan 1990

Les Coûts Indirects Des Accidents Du Travail, Bernard Brody, Yves Létourneau, André Poirier

Rapports de recherche scientifique

Système Informatisé De Recueil Et D'Analyse Des Données D'Accident Du Personnel Soignant - Phase 2 : Validation Du Prototype De Logiciel Développé, Marie St-Vincent, Chantal Tellier, Francine Ouellette

A Generalization Of Linear Multistep Methods, Leon Arriola Jan 1990

A Generalization Of Linear Multistep Methods, Leon Arriola

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

A generalization of the methods that are currently available to solve systems of ordinary differential equations is made. This generalization is made by constructing linear multistep methods from an arbitrary set of monotone interpolating and approximating functions. Local truncation error estimates as well as stability analysis is given. Specifically, the class of linear multistep methods of the Adams and BDF type are discussed.

Effect Of Passive Flow-Control Devices On Turbulent Low-Speed Base Flow, Farid Heidari Miandoab Jan 1990

Effect Of Passive Flow-Control Devices On Turbulent Low-Speed Base Flow, Farid Heidari Miandoab

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Some configurations of blunt trailing-edge airfoils are known to have a lower pressure drag compared to sharp trailing-edge airfoils. However, this advantage in addition to the structural advantage of a thick trailing-edge airfoil is offset by its high base drag. At subsonic velocities, this is attributed to the low-pressure base flow dominated by a Karman vortex street. In the limiting case, the steady separated flow over a rearward-facing step is attained if the periodically shed vortices from a blunt trailing-edge are suppressed by the addition of a base splitter-plate.

Freshwater Transport On The Continental Shelf Of The Southeastern United States, Cheolsoo Kim Jan 1990

Freshwater Transport On The Continental Shelf Of The Southeastern United States, Cheolsoo Kim

OES Theses and Dissertations

The circulation of water over the shelf of the southeastern United States was examined during the Fall Removal Experiment from late October to early November 1987. A steady state, two-dimensional analytical model of wind and density driven flow was used to study the relative importance of driving forces in shelf circulation, fate of freshwater and cross-shelf exchange processes. The inner and middle shelf mean circulation was found to be driven by four major components: (1) longshore wind, (2) longshore pressure gradient, (3) onshore wind and (4) cross-shelf density gradient including freshwater influx. Wind stress was the primary driving force for …

Transcriptional Regulation Of Gene Expression In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Laurie A. Stargell, Kathleen M. Karrer, Martin A. Gorovsky Jan 1990

Transcriptional Regulation Of Gene Expression In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Laurie A. Stargell, Kathleen M. Karrer, Martin A. Gorovsky

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The only well-characterized study of gene expression in Tetrahymena thermophila (1) demonstrates that the temperature dependent expression of the Ser H3 gene is regulated at the level of mRNA stability. A run-on transcription assay was developed to determine if regulation of RNA stability was a major mechanism regulating gene expression in Tetrahymena or if transcriptional regulation dominates. The relative transcriptional activities of 14 Tetrahymena genes were determined in different physiological/developmental states (growing, starved and conjugating) in which many of the genes showed striking differences in RNA abundance. In every case except Ser H3, changes in transcription accompanied changes in RNA …

Introduction To Keynote Speaker Randall Bovbjerg, Joel J. Finer Jan 1990

Introduction To Keynote Speaker Randall Bovbjerg, Joel J. Finer

Journal of Law and Health

There is probably no constitutional duty on the government to provide medical care; for the Court recently reaffirmed, in Deshaney, the current Court's view of our Constitution as prohibiting governmental wrongs rather than granting entitlements from the government. We say there is a moral duty to provide medical care to those who cannot afford such care. Where does the moral right to receive basic medical care come from?

Opening Remarks: An Overview Of The Problem, Robert E. Eckardt Jan 1990

Opening Remarks: An Overview Of The Problem, Robert E. Eckardt

Journal of Law and Health

It is a pleasure to be here this morning and to give you some opening comments about what is obviously a very important issue and one that I think does require the involvement of a multitude of different persons from public policy, public health, law and other fields. As I look at the Conference program, however, I feel a little bit uneasy with my assignment since those of us in Foundations are quintessential consultants; we are not really out on the front line doing anything, but are instead providing advice, assistance, counseling, and sometimes money, to those who are out …

Defining The Problem And Searching For Solutions: Health Care Providers And Consumers, Richard Buxbaum, Frank Kimber, Henry Manning, David W. Van Heeckeren Jan 1990

Defining The Problem And Searching For Solutions: Health Care Providers And Consumers, Richard Buxbaum, Frank Kimber, Henry Manning, David W. Van Heeckeren

Journal of Law and Health

A panel consisting of health care providers and consumers discussed defining the problem and searching for solutions. Richard Buxbaum of the Greater Cleveland Hospital Association addressed uncompensated care, otherwise known as charity care, as a problem for hospitals. Mandating employer based health insurance was offered as a solution. Frank Kimbler of the Federation for Community Planning gave an overview of the consumer side of the uninsured problem. He mentioned a joint pilot project to insure the working poor. Henry Manning of Metrohealth explained how price competition between hospitals creates a problem for urban teaching hospitals which bear the costs of …

Law And Legislation In Ohio, Jane Campbell, Ray Miller, Grace Drake, Susan Sheutzow Jan 1990

Law And Legislation In Ohio, Jane Campbell, Ray Miller, Grace Drake, Susan Sheutzow

Journal of Law and Health

A discussion of the current Ohio health insurance law regarding the uninsured and underinsured and what the Ohio legislature is trying to do about it. Jane Campbell discussed adopting a system similar to the Canadian health care system, creating an Ohio health care trust fund, and helping those in high-risk health care categories. Ray Miller addressed indigent health care and the Hagan bill. Grace Drake said that universal health care has not been successful where it has been tried, so the focus should be on the working poor and uninsured.

A New Twist In The War On Drugs: The Constitutional Right Of A Mentally Ill Criminal Defendant To Refuse Antipsychotic Medication That Would Make Him Competent To Stand Trial, Brian Domb Jan 1990

A New Twist In The War On Drugs: The Constitutional Right Of A Mentally Ill Criminal Defendant To Refuse Antipsychotic Medication That Would Make Him Competent To Stand Trial, Brian Domb

Journal of Law and Health

The purpose of this Note is to analyze what right, if any exists for a mentally ill criminal defendant to refuse the administration of antipsychotic drugs to gain competence to stand trial. Focusing mainly on the trial context of the right to refuse is not to suggest that there is not overlap between the right of a criminal defendant to refuse and the right of a civilly committed patient to refuse. Indeed, it is often unclear why an individual is brought to the emergency room of a general hospital and eventually committed, rather than being arrested and booked and later …

Physicians And Maternal-Fetal Conflicts: Duties, Rights And Responsibilities, James J. Nocon Jan 1990

Physicians And Maternal-Fetal Conflicts: Duties, Rights And Responsibilities, James J. Nocon

Journal of Law and Health

The physician-patient relationship is substantially influenced by issues involving ethics, morality, law, and politics. Throughout this article, the nexus between law and medicine will be emphasized. Perhaps the most important of these associations is the relationship between principles, duties and rights. Justice Holmes aptly stated that since no rights were absolute, they were poor tools for analysis in any case because they were not truly fundamental considerations. "Duties precede rights logically and chronologically." Holmes eventually came to view "duties" as derivative notions and thought that it was essential to understand the principles at work, not the moral sounding labels attached …

Medicare/Medicaid Reimbursement Issues - A Provider's Perspective, Deborah M. Naglak Jan 1990

Medicare/Medicaid Reimbursement Issues - A Provider's Perspective, Deborah M. Naglak

Journal of Law and Health

In 1965, Congress took its first historical step towards the ideal of universally accessible health care services with the enactment of the Medicare and Medicaid programs. These programs are federally subsidized health insurance programs administered by the Health Care Financing Administration within the Department of Health and Human Services. Under the Medicare statute, the federal government reimburses providers of medical services for care rendered to elderly or disabled patients, subject to guidelines and limitations. The Medicare Act establishes the costs allowed for reimbursement for services and authorizes the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to promulgate …

The Existing Confidentiality Privileges As Applied To Rape Victims, Bridget M. Mccafferty Jan 1990

The Existing Confidentiality Privileges As Applied To Rape Victims, Bridget M. Mccafferty

Journal of Law and Health

It is evident that when this type of questioning occurs, the victim must overcome the presumption that she is at fault. As it exists, the prosecution of the rapist also results in the prosecution of the victim. However, it is undeniable that the defendant in a rape case is presumed innocent until a judicial determination states otherwise. A dilemma arises when the court attempts to balance the victim's right to bring the accused to trial and the defendant's right to prove his innocence. Currently, the judicial system favors the presumption of the defendant's innocence, presupposing that the victim has falsely …

Production, Consumption, And Consciousness, Warren Sprouse Jan 1990

Production, Consumption, And Consciousness, Warren Sprouse

Honors Papers

To begin with disclaimers: the discussion which follows is not a `treatise’ on education in any sense of the term. Nor is it intended as a programme for educational reform, per se. Disciplines far more qualified for that task than political theory must assume it, to assure a proper treatment of such an immensely important undertaking. Rather, the present effort is more than anything an attempt to bring two of the most significant Marxist writers of our century (namely Antonio Gramsci and Louis Althusser) into closer proximity to one another. Something of a justification of this approach is necessary to …

Strain And Volume Loss In A Second Order Buckle Fold, Central Appalachian Valley And Ridge, U.S.A., Michelle J. Markley Jan 1990

Strain And Volume Loss In A Second Order Buckle Fold, Central Appalachian Valley And Ridge, U.S.A., Michelle J. Markley

Honors Papers

Large scale thrusts and imbricates overlain by folded sedimentary strata characterize structure in the Valley and Ridge Province of the Central Appalachians. The Cambrian Waynesboro Formation is a decollement zone that detached an imbricated Cambro-Ordovician sequence from an unfaulted Pre-Cambrian basement. The Ordovician Martinsburg Shale is a second zone of major detachment that de-coupled the blind thrust system in the Cambro-Ordovician carbonates from the overlying orogenic wedge. Thus, the Central Valley and Ridge deformed during the late Paleozoic Alleghenian orogeny as a three tiered system consisting of the undeformed basement, the imbricated stiff layer, and the primarily folded cover layer. …

Frowning Babe Or Brightening Glance? Blake And Yeats's Particular Uses Of Metaphor, Daniel Muir Jan 1990

Frowning Babe Or Brightening Glance? Blake And Yeats's Particular Uses Of Metaphor, Daniel Muir

Honors Papers

The first significant evidence of Blake's influence on Yeats was the three volume edition of Blake's works published by Bernard Quarich and edited by Richard Ellis and W. B. Yeats in 1893. Within the history of Blakean criticism, the volume is unique. It is the product of Ellis and Yeats's occult viewpoints combined with enthusiastic but imperfect scholarship. The first two interpretative volumes of the edition, entitled "The System" and "The Meaning," include extreme restatements of other nineteenth-century interpretations, as well as several disposable ideas that reveal more about the editors' viewpoints than Blake's own. Among the most outlandish is …

Gravity's Rainbow: Modernist Discourse Vineland: Postmodernist Discourse, Ted Mouw Jan 1990

Gravity's Rainbow: Modernist Discourse Vineland: Postmodernist Discourse, Ted Mouw

Honors Papers

To locate Gravity's Rainbow as a postmodern text within modernist discourse is probably sort of an odd thing. Obviously, the books' thematic depictions of linguistic colonialism and discourse of control (capitalism), suggest the inscription of power relations into formulations of truth and rationality, and a postmodern analysis of discursive operations and hierarchies. Yet, I want to stress here the ways in which we have been oriented to access and reproduce the text through modernist discourse.
