Approaches To Learning: Relationships With Pilot Performance, Phillip J. Moore, Ross A. Telfer Jan 1990

Approaches To Learning: Relationships With Pilot Performance, Phillip J. Moore, Ross A. Telfer

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Using a sample of 62 trainee pilots, this study aimed to examine the relationships between approaches to learning (Surface, Deep, Achieving) and performance in ground school topics of perceived differing degrees of difficulty and also performance in the aeroplane as measured by hours taken to fly solo. Significant negative relationships were found between Surface Approach scores and all ground school topics. For time taken to fly the aeroplane without an instructor, Deep scores showed a significant negative relationship. Achieving Approach scores played little role in the findings.

Pilot’S Evaluation Of The Usefulness Of Full Mission Ifr Simulator Flights For General Aviation Pilot Training, Leonard E. Ross, Paul W. Slotten, Louise M. Yeazel Jan 1990

Pilot’S Evaluation Of The Usefulness Of Full Mission Ifr Simulator Flights For General Aviation Pilot Training, Leonard E. Ross, Paul W. Slotten, Louise M. Yeazel

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Professional pilots, including flight instructors, who had participated in multiple session line-oriented flight training (LOFT) Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) simulator flights differing in task difficulty evaluated the value of such flights for the training of general aviation pilots. These flights, which employed a relatively low cost simulator (Frasca 141), were judged to be quite useful for instrument student flight training, for instrument rated pilots with moderate instrument experience, and for experienced pilots. The aspects of flight that were seen as receiving the greatest benefit from the flight scenarios were practicing responses to problem situations, attitude instrument flying, practicing instrument approaches …

An Extension Of Essentially Non-Oscillatory Shock-Capturing Schemes To Multi-Dimensional Systems Of Conservation Laws, Jay Casper Jan 1990

An Extension Of Essentially Non-Oscillatory Shock-Capturing Schemes To Multi-Dimensional Systems Of Conservation Laws, Jay Casper

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In recent years, a class of numerical schemes for solving hyperbolic partial differential equations has been developed which generalizes the first-order method of Godunov to arbitrary order of accuracy. High-order accuracy is obtained, wherever the solution is smooth, by an essentially non-oscillatory (ENO) piecewise polynomial reconstruction procedure, which yields high-order pointwise information from the cell averages of the solution at a given point in time. When applied to piecewise smooth initial data, this reconstruction enables a flux computation that provides a time update of the solution which is of high-order accuracy, wherever the function is smooth, and avoids a Gibbs …

Middle Eocene Foraminifera From The Piney Point Formation Of The Virginia And Maryland Coastal Plain, Megan S. Jones Jan 1990

Middle Eocene Foraminifera From The Piney Point Formation Of The Virginia And Maryland Coastal Plain, Megan S. Jones

OES Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the foraminiferal fauna, both benthic and planktonic, of the outcropping (45 samples) and subsurface (31 samples) middle Eocene Piney Point Formation in Virginia and Maryland. The primary objective of this study is to further refine the depositional history of the Salisbury Embayment which is represented by the middle Eocene Piney Point Formation. Ninety-six species of benthic and planktonic foraminifera were identified in this study. Of these, several are characteristic of the middle Eocene: Asterigerina texana, Hanzawaia danvillensis, Ceratobulimina exima, Cibicides westi, Chiloguembelitria columbiana, C. stavensis, Testacarinata inconspicua and Pseudohastigerina wilcoxensislmicra. While these were relatively abundant, diagnostic middle …

Electrical Properties Of Hydrogenated Diamond, Sacharia Albin, Linwood Watkins Jan 1990

Electrical Properties Of Hydrogenated Diamond, Sacharia Albin, Linwood Watkins

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Hydrogen passivation of deep traps in diamond is demonstrated. Current‐voltage (I‐V) characteristics of polycrystalline thin film and bulk diamond were studied before and after hydrogenation. On hydrogenation, all the samples showed several orders of magnitude increase in conductivity. Hydrogenation was carried out under controlled conditions to study the changes in the I‐V characteristics of the samples. The concentration of uncompensated traps was varied systematically by hydrogenation. The concentration of electrically active hydrogen was determined from the I‐V data. It is shown that hydrogenation is an alternative to deep‐level transient spectroscopy, suitable for …

Principal And Teacher Views On Cooperative Action In The Administration Of Iowa's Secondary Schools, Stephen R. Nicholson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which Iowa secondary school principals and teacher building representatives support a model for cooperative action in the administration of the state's secondary schools. In addition differences in the perceptions of those principals and teachers are examined and the extent to which practices in the schools reflect cooperative practices is determined.

The population for the study included all secondary teachers in Iowa identified by their local education associations as the building representative and the principals of the schools where the building representatives were employed. Data were gathered using a survey …

Development And Validation Of A Model For Training Maintenance Supervisors For Productivity Improvements In Manufacturing Operations, Robert Reed Johnson Jan 1990

Development And Validation Of A Model For Training Maintenance Supervisors For Productivity Improvements In Manufacturing Operations, Robert Reed Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem of this study was to develop and validate a training model for training maintenance supervisors. This training model focused on those areas, defined by industrial managers, where additional supervisory training was most likely to improve the performance of the maintenance departments.

Research of industrial and maintenance publications identified the maintenance function as having one of the lowest productivity levels in manufacturing organizations. Supervisor training was identified as a means to improve productivity in maintenance departments. An industrial survey completed by maintenance managers in manufacturing organizations in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin identified those activities that were the responsibility …

Principals' Perceptions About Regular Education Teachers' Attitudes Toward Integration Of Students With Handicaps, Susan Kay Posekany Sherwood Jan 1990

Principals' Perceptions About Regular Education Teachers' Attitudes Toward Integration Of Students With Handicaps, Susan Kay Posekany Sherwood

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As the movement to integrate students with handicaps into regular education classrooms continues, regular education teachers are a critical component of the successful implementation of the integration process. Because building principals must assume responsibility for selecting the teachers who will be assigned integrated classrooms, this investigation determined the degree to which principals were able to predict the attitudes of regular education teachers toward the integration of students with handicaps.

From public school districts in a Midwestern state, 85 pairs of teachers and principals were randomly selected from three educational levels: (a) elementary, (b) middle, and (c) secondary. The data were …

The Effects Of A Microteaching Program Upon The Critical Thinking Skills Of Preservice Teachers, Vickie Trent-Wilson Jan 1990

The Effects Of A Microteaching Program Upon The Critical Thinking Skills Of Preservice Teachers, Vickie Trent-Wilson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Critical thinking skills have received considerable attention during the past decade as test scores measuring higher-order thinking abilities have declined (Benderson, 1984). It has been advocated that the responsibility for the development of these skills lies with the classroom teacher (Glickman, 1987; Beyer, 1983; Costa, 1981). Brandt (1984) purports that all teachers need to understand cognitive processes and ways to strengthen them. Yet, many teachers have not had the benefit of "systematic cognitive development in their own schooling; they are unprepared to foster cognitive skills in their own students" (Martin, 1984, p. 68). If thinking skills are a desired outcome …

Gender And The Search For Identity In Gwendolyn Macewan’S Julian And Noman Stories, Anne Marie Martin Jan 1990

Gender And The Search For Identity In Gwendolyn Macewan’S Julian And Noman Stories, Anne Marie Martin

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis looks at the theme of gender and the search for identity in three fictional works of Canadian poet and novelist Gwendolyn MacEwen. The works considered are her first novel Julian the Magician (1963) and her two collections of short stories Noman (1972) and Noman’s Land (1985).

The thesis examines the way self-identity is characterized and considers the way gender is presented in relation to the self. The work shows the development of MacEwen’s idea of self from a creative eternal force equivalent to the Christ image in Julian the Magician to an eternal force that finds its expression …

A Program To Prepare Parents Isolated From Parenting Role Models For Appropriate Developmental Interaction With Infants And Toddlers, Jane K. Harris Jan 1990

A Program To Prepare Parents Isolated From Parenting Role Models For Appropriate Developmental Interaction With Infants And Toddlers, Jane K. Harris

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Because of demographic factors, care givers enrolled in park district infant and toddler programs appeared isolated from parenting role models. A need existed to provide parent education and resource material without detracting from the established purpose of the course.

The author designed and implemented a modification to a series of five, eight-week classes based on a demand-driven model which established the teacher as a resource person for parenting skills in addition to responsibility for the primary curriculum subject matter. Without diverting significant class time from the motor skills oriented classes, the program fostered interaction among the parents and caregivers in …

Promoting Literacy Development Of First Graders Through The Implementation Of A Process Writing Program, Gayal N. Cathcart

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This project was designed to change traditional methods of writing instruction, which had not been effective in meeting the developmental needs of first-grade children. Four goals were selected to address this problem. The first goal was of changing the character of first-grade writing instruction so that emphasis was primarily placed upon content and stimulating the imagination rather than on the mechanics of writing. This was met through the establishment of writing centers in first-grade classrooms. The second goal of providing children with extended writing opportunities, usually a variety of writing forms and audiences, was met through a home writing plan. …

An Evaluation Of Phosphorus Export From Four Urban Land Uses During Summer Rainfall-Runoff Events In The Laurel Creek Watershed, E. Martin Pemberton Jan 1990

An Evaluation Of Phosphorus Export From Four Urban Land Uses During Summer Rainfall-Runoff Events In The Laurel Creek Watershed, E. Martin Pemberton

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Cultural eutrophication, resulting from anthropogenic inputs of nutrients, such as phosphorus, can be detrimental to aquatic ecosystems. The effectiveness of recent phosphorus abatement programs, focused on point source inputs such as municipal and industrial effluent, has brought attention to the reduction of non-point sources, such as urban runoff. Target phosphate loads for the Great Lakes, set by the International Joint Commission, are deemed unattainable, without phosphorous reduction from non-point sources (Yaksich and Rumer, 1980), and it is with this knowledge that this thesis is undertaken. Analysis of phosphate export data from areas of different urban land uses indicates that residential …
