Analysis For Creep, Shrinkage And Temperature Effects On Expansion Joint Movements In Composite Prestressed Concrete Bridges., Keith Joseph Rebello Jan 1990

Analysis For Creep, Shrinkage And Temperature Effects On Expansion Joint Movements In Composite Prestressed Concrete Bridges., Keith Joseph Rebello

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A rigorous and efficient analytical model to predict the long-term deformation behavior of bridges with multiple, precast, pretensioned, prestressed concrete girders supporting cast-in-place-concrete deck slabs, was developed. The analytical procedure uses the finite element method with three-dimensional 20-node isoparametric elements to realistically model bridge geometry. Time dependent effects due to load and temperature history, creep, shrinkage and aging of concrete are included in the analysis. Creep and shrinkage strains are evaluated at different times using the more commonly used procedures, namely, the ACI-209, Bazant-Panula II and CEB-FIP procedures. Temperature strains are calculated from an assumed typical bridge temperature distribution based …

The Relationship Of Serum Killing, Phagocytosis And Oxidant Production By Bovine Monocyte-Derived Macrophages To Intracellular Survival Of Brucella Abortus., Denise Ida Bounous Jan 1990

The Relationship Of Serum Killing, Phagocytosis And Oxidant Production By Bovine Monocyte-Derived Macrophages To Intracellular Survival Of Brucella Abortus., Denise Ida Bounous

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Functional activities of monocyte-derived macrophages and serum killing ability in a population of Brucella abortus-naive cows were evaluated. The ability of these macrophages to phagocytize and control intracellular survival of B.abortus and to produce oxidant was measured. Fresh normal bovine sera killed significantly more B.abortus than reactor serum or fetal bovine serum. When heated to destroy complement, none of the sera were capable of significant killing. The ability of sera from B.abortus-naive cows to kill the bacteria was normally distributed, with all animals within $\pm$ 2 sd of the mean. Phagocytosis of bacteria opsonized with autologous or reactor sera was …

The Effect Of Severity Of Closed Head Injury On Memory Functioning., Linda Marie Brown Jan 1990

The Effect Of Severity Of Closed Head Injury On Memory Functioning., Linda Marie Brown

This study was undertaken to examine the relationship between neuroanatomy of memory, the structural mechanics of closed head injury and the resulting effects on memory functioning. The experimental groups were composed of 30 closed head injured individuals equally divided by severity of injury based on posttraumatic amnesia (PTA). The first group included 15 mild head injured patients whose PTA was defined as less than 60 minutes. Group two was composed of 15 severely head injured patients whose PTA was greater than 24 hours. The comparison group consisted of 15 non-head injured volunteers matched to the experimental group by age, gender, …

The Social Integration-Deviance Hypothesis In Sociology: The Case Of Teenage Fertility., Stephen Joseph Caldas Jan 1990

The Social Integration-Deviance Hypothesis In Sociology: The Case Of Teenage Fertility., Stephen Joseph Caldas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this dissertation is to construct and test an elaborated version of the social integration-deviance model. Social integration theory traces its origins to Emile Durkheim, who postulated the existence of two forms of social integration, today known as normative and functional integration. In his classic work Suicide (1897/1951) Durkheim first empirically tested his theory of social integration, though arguably only for normative integration. Others have since elaborated on his theory, and have tested various versions of it (Hirschi, 1969; Collette, Webb, & Smith, 1979). The current work conceptualizes teenage childbearing in the United States as deviancy from an …

Interaction Properties Of Geogrids In Reinforced Soil Walls, Testing And Analysis., Khalid A. Farrag Jan 1990

Interaction Properties Of Geogrids In Reinforced Soil Walls, Testing And Analysis., Khalid A. Farrag

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The considerable development of the geosynthetics and their increasing use in soil reinforcement made it necessary to develop methods of measuring the interaction properties and modeling load transfer in reinforced soil structures. The current testing procedures demonstrate significant limitations related to the testing methodology and data interpretation. In order to address these limitations, a pull-out box and direct shear box were constructed. The design of these boxes overcomes most of theses limitations and provides the capability of conducting displacement-rate controlled tests for the evaluation of short-term behavior of the soil-reinforcement system, and load-controlled tests to evaluate their time-dependent performance. The …

Ecology Of Erwinia Chrysanthemi, Causal Agent Of Bacterial Stem And Root Rot On Sweet Potato And Etiology Of Souring., Valmir Duarte Jan 1990

Ecology Of Erwinia Chrysanthemi, Causal Agent Of Bacterial Stem And Root Rot On Sweet Potato And Etiology Of Souring., Valmir Duarte

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During three seasons, mother storage roots of Beauregard sweetpotato were inoculated with Erwinia chrysanthemi in March, and the pathogen was recovered from them the day they were bedded, 7 days later, and at the first and second pullings of slips as well as from underground stems at harvest in September and October of the first and second transplantings, respectively. Little stem rot occurred in the fields during the three seasons. Thirteen strains of E. chrysanthemi, 8 isolated originally from sweetpotato and 5 from other hosts, and one strain of E. carotovora subsp. carotovora were inoculated on sweetpotato and 12 different …

The Relation Between Depression Scores And Social Skills Scores In Children: A Cross-Sectional Study Of Self-Report And Parent-Report Measures., Larry Ray Friedt

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between depressive symptoms and social skills in children was examined. Three depression measures (Children's Depression Inventory, Reynolds' Child/Adolescent Depression Scale, Depression Self-Rating Scale) and two social skills measures (Matson Evaluation of Social Skills with Youngsters, Social Skills Rating System) were used to obtain parent-report and self-report data. One hundred fifty-eight children in six different grades (3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th) were the subjects of the study. Reliability of each measure was examined using internal consistency reliability coefficients (Cronbach's alpha) which indicated all the measures except the Depression Self-Rating Scale parent-report yielded coefficients of.80 or greater. The validity …

Evaluation Of Selected Pulmonary Function Tests In Resting Thoroughbred Horses Having Reversible, Experimentally Induced Respiratory Dysfunctions., Alan John Guthrie Jan 1990

Evaluation Of Selected Pulmonary Function Tests In Resting Thoroughbred Horses Having Reversible, Experimentally Induced Respiratory Dysfunctions., Alan John Guthrie

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the first part of this study was to develop computerized techniques for automation of instrument calibration, data collection and calculation of indices of pulmonary mechanical function in resting and exercising horses. The microcomputer system developed enabled a single trained technician to reliably operate the equipment in an equine pulmonary mechanics laboratory. The first experiment investigated the temporal effects of histamine and methacholine aerosols on indices of pulmonary mechanics derived from the linear equation of motion. Data calculated on a breath-by-breath basis were too variable to be reliably modeled. Following application of averaging techniques, the temporal effects of …

Beta-Endorphin Receptors On Equine Lymphocytes: Relationship To Immune Function And Exercise., Jena Gosselink Hamra Jan 1990

Beta-Endorphin Receptors On Equine Lymphocytes: Relationship To Immune Function And Exercise., Jena Gosselink Hamra

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Current evidence suggests that endogenous opioids are released in response to various stressors and that these opioids interact with cells of the immune system, and modulate immune function. However, data substantiating this are conflicting. Therefore, this study endeavored to clarify the role of beta-endorphin (BE) in exercise and immune function. Beta-endorphin exhibited a diurnal rhythm in the horse with peak plasma levels occurring at 0900 hours. Analgesia, tachycardia and mydriasis were also observed at this time, mimicking the effects of morphine in the horse. Therefore, subsequent experiments were performed at 0900 hours during times of increased basal opioid activity. Beta-endorphin …

Assessment Of Athletic Potential And Augmentation Of Performance In Thoroughbred Racehorses., John Daniel Harkins Jan 1990

Assessment Of Athletic Potential And Augmentation Of Performance In Thoroughbred Racehorses., John Daniel Harkins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purposes of this dissertation were to (1) determine running abilities of horses on the racetrack, (2) design treadmill standard exercise tests (SETs) to measure exercise variables that correlate with racetrack performance, and (3) assess the influence of training, competition, and ergogenic aids on performance. Run times of 25 Thoroughbreds were determined during solo and competitive track runs of 1200, 1600, and 2000 meters. Cardiac, respiratory, and hematologic variables were later measured during treadmill SETs. Variables were correlated with average run times. Heart rate scores, V$\sb{200}$, plasma lactate values, and maximal oxygen uptake correlated best with performance. Interval and conventional …

An Adaptive Control System For Biological And Robotic Simulations., Sunggyu Kwon Jan 1990

An Adaptive Control System For Biological And Robotic Simulations., Sunggyu Kwon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An adaptive control algorithm based on Albus' CMAC (Cerebellar Model Articulation Controller) was studied with emphasis on how to build a Multilayered CMAC Control System. This concept has been devised to circumvent the excessive memory requirements of CMAC controllers for complex control systems with many inputs. The Neighborhood Sequential Training technique was devised as a general CMAC training technique. This training technique is straightforward to implement and well matched to CMAC's memory generalization. A two-layered CMAC control module was simulated for a six dimensional CMAC problem of trajectory control for a six degree of freedom manipulator. Layering was accomplished by …

In Situ And Laboratory Evaluation Of Liquefaction Resistance Of A Fine Sand., Behnam Mahmoodzadegan Jan 1990

In Situ And Laboratory Evaluation Of Liquefaction Resistance Of A Fine Sand., Behnam Mahmoodzadegan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Liquefaction is a phenomenon during which saturated cohesionless soils lose a major portion of their shear strength, and can potentially cause catastrophic failures. This study was focused on the in-situ and laboratory evaluation of liquefaction risk. Several types of penetration tests were performed. Four procedures were selected to evaluate the liquefaction potential of a number of sandy sublayers in two sites with well-documented seismic history. A new hollow cylinder equipment, which allows performing monotonic or cyclic liquefaction tests on annular soil specimens, was designed, fabricated and calibrated. The laboratory testing program included monotonic and cyclic liquefaction tests using two different …

Working-Class Culture: Definition And Outcomes., Joan Marie Morris Jan 1990

Working-Class Culture: Definition And Outcomes., Joan Marie Morris

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is a quantitative analysis of the dynamics of class culture. The project has two primary components. In part one I construct a class categorization scheme in which occupations are grouped according to the substantive complexity of work. In part two, I conduct four separate sub-analyses, each of which uses a pre-existing dataset to model the effects of class status on four dimensions of class culture: orientations to work, family power, political orientation, and class self-identification. In regard to work, I find that task complexity has an independent effect on job satisfaction; that manual workers, more than nonmanual workers, …

Stress And Headache., Thomas Hamilton Mosley Jr Jan 1990

Stress And Headache., Thomas Hamilton Mosley Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Stress is the most frequently cited precipitant of both migraine and muscle-contraction headache. Although stress is thought to play a causal role in the etiology of headache, past research has relied solely on cross-sectional designs and between-subjects data analytic techniques, thus severely restricting conclusions regarding causality and obscuring potentially meaningful individual variability. The present investigation provided a partial replication and extension of prior research on the relation between minor stress and headache and attempted to redress a number of prior methodological shortcomings. A longitudinal design and within subject, lagged, time-series regression analyses were employed. Migraine (n = 26) and muscle-contraction …

The Relations Between Stress, Mood And Insomnia., Susan Rubman Jan 1990

The Relations Between Stress, Mood And Insomnia., Susan Rubman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Stress is hypothesized to cause increased cognitive and physiological arousal which is incompatible with sleep. Major life events have been implicated as a significant factor in the onset of chronic insomnia (Healey et al., 1981), and there is some suggestion that minor life events influence symptoms as well (Haynes et al., 1981). The present study was designed to evaluate and further clarify the role of daily minor stressors and mood variables on sleep in both normal sleepers and insomniacs. Subjects with insomnia secondary to medical or physical disorders were excluded from this study. Fifty-four adult subjects (20 mixed-complaint insomniacs, 17 …

A Rock-Plant Filter Bench-Scale Study And Computer Model., Donna Gail Skipper Jan 1990

A Rock-Plant Filter Bench-Scale Study And Computer Model., Donna Gail Skipper

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Part One, three bench-scale rock filters containing 2 feet of gravel were investigated. Two of the filters were planted with Sagittaria lancifolia and Scirpus validus, while the third filter was an unvegetated control filter. During a preliminary portion of this study, the BOD$\sb5$ surface loading was held constant at 4.96 g/day/m$\sp2$. The BOD$\sb5$ mass removal percentages at this time averaged 75%, 60%, and 44% for the Scirpus, Sagittaria, and control systems, respectively. Following this constant loading rate, an 80-day experiment was run on the filters using eight combinations of two flow rates and four influent BOD$\sb5$ concentrations, each combination …

With The Flavor Of The South: The Influence Of The Southern Tradition On The Writings Of Shirley Ann Grau., Judy Ann Tarver Jan 1990

With The Flavor Of The South: The Influence Of The Southern Tradition On The Writings Of Shirley Ann Grau., Judy Ann Tarver

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Since before the time of the so-called Southern Renaissance of the 1920's, critics have been debating the existence and the value of a literature of the South. Although they agree on little else, most would concur that such a literature would share certain characteristics: a belief in the importance of community and the past; a tendency to prefer myth, or a perception of reality, to reality itself; a religious sensibility, especially a pervading sense of sin and guilt; an emphasis on place; and the use of elements of the Gothic. For thirty-five years Shirley Ann Grau has been writing fiction …

Effects Of Artificial Mineral Licks On White-Tailed Deer., Stephen Redmore Schultz Jan 1990

Effects Of Artificial Mineral Licks On White-Tailed Deer., Stephen Redmore Schultz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A commercial mineral mixture for deer was used to evaluate the effects of broad-spectrum dietary mineral supplementation on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) growth, antler development, and tissue mineral content. Forty-two artificial mineral licks for deer were established on 3 study areas in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. All licks were monitored monthly, recharged to original level if used, and mineral consumption recorded from May 1988 through December 1989. Consumption data were converted to estimated average per deer values based on population estimates. Effects of artificial lick mineral consumption on free-ranging deer were examined by comparing deer harvested during the 1988-89 and …

Predicting Pseudoneglect By Right Hemisphere Activation., Mark Sterling Warner Jan 1990

Predicting Pseudoneglect By Right Hemisphere Activation., Mark Sterling Warner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Hemispatial neglect is a visual-perceptual disorder characterized by a conscious and otherwise alert individual's failure to respond to a meaningful stimulus presented to the side opposite a right hemisphere brain lesion. In recent years researchers have demonstrated the existence of a neglect phenomenon in normal subjects which appears as the opposite of that experienced by brain injured subjects. This phenomenon is referred to as "pseudoneglect" and is demonstrated by horizontal line bisection to the left of true center. Researchers have suggested that pseudoneglect may be explained by preferential right hemisphere processing for visuospatial stimulation. The purpose of this study was …

The Combustion Of Linear Droplet Arrays In A Coaxial Convective Flow., Jeng-Syan Tsai Jan 1990

The Combustion Of Linear Droplet Arrays In A Coaxial Convective Flow., Jeng-Syan Tsai

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As approximations for spray-combustion processes, a series of increasingly sophisticated numerical models has been developed to simulate the combustion of linear droplet arrays in a co-axial, convective flow. Common to all of the models is an embedded grid, developed to increase computational accuracy. The first and simplest model is potential flow model (for Re $\to$ $\infty$). The flow is assumed to be ideal and infinitely-fast kinetics (flame sheet assumption) represent the combustion. The results show that the instantaneous droplet burning rates are increased as the droplet spacing is increased, and the burning rates of droplets tend asymptotically to smaller values …

A Geographic Information System For Risk Assessment Of Fasciola Hepatica In Cattle., Stanley Harland Zukowski

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A geographic information system (GIS) was used to assemble and analyze data on the spatial distribution of habitat of the snail, Fossaria bulimoides, an intermediate hose of Fasciola hepatica. A model of habitat was developed on a single 760ha farm on the Chenier Plain of southwestern Louisiana and extrapolated for testing on 12 other farms in a 29,000ha extended study area of the Chenier Plain region. Input maps were: (1) soil series (type), (2) fencelines, (3) F. bulimoides habitat, and (4) soil salinity. On the primary study farm, habitat was strongly associated with interfaces of marsh and chenier (relict beach) …

Rice Improvement Through Tissue Culture: Inheritance Of Somaclonal Variation And Improvement Of Somaculture Techniques., Qingjun Xie Jan 1990

Rice Improvement Through Tissue Culture: Inheritance Of Somaclonal Variation And Improvement Of Somaculture Techniques., Qingjun Xie

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objectives of this research were to study the inheritance of homozygous variation from rice somaculture, to select rice somaclones for increased sheath blight resistance, and to determine the mode of inheritance of the resistance. To accomplish these objectives it was necessary to improve somaculture techniques for rice suspension and protoplast culture especially for the American long-grain cultivars. A method for incorporation of the chemical mutagen, ethyl methane-sulfonate (EMS), into the somaculture system was also developed to increase the frequency of somaclonal variation in tissue culture stable cultivars. The inheritance of six homozygous variant characteristics from five somaclones was investigated. …
