Metaphor, Theory, And Practice In The History Of Psychology, David E. Leary Jan 1990

Metaphor, Theory, And Practice In The History Of Psychology, David E. Leary

Psychology Faculty Publications

In these chapters we have seen that neuropsychological discourse has been advanced by the use of metaphors from telecommunications, control systems engineering, computer science, holography, and other developments in parallel distributed processing (Pribram, Chapter 2); that theoretical discussions of the emotions have revolved around metaphors of inner feelings, physiological responses, vestiges of animal nature, diseases of the mind, driving forces, and social roles (Averill, Chapter 3); that treatments of motivation have portrayed the human person as a pawn, an agent, a natural entity, an organism, or a machine (McReynolds, Chapter 4); that a vast array of cognitive metaphors have been …

William James On The Self And Personality: Clearing The Ground For Subsequent Theorists, Researchers, And Practitioners, David E. Leary Jan 1990

William James On The Self And Personality: Clearing The Ground For Subsequent Theorists, Researchers, And Practitioners, David E. Leary

Psychology Faculty Publications

The fundamental basis of William James's psychology - the rock-bottom foundation on which it is constructed - is "the stream of thought" or "the stream of consciousness. " 1* The first and preeminent characteristic of our flowingly continuous experience of "thought" or "consciousness," James (1890/1983d) said, is that it is personal (pp. 220-224). Every thought, every psychological experience, is mine, or hers, or his, or yours. For this reason, he suggested, "the personal self rather than the thought [or consciousness] might be treated as the immediate datum in psychology" (p. 221).2 Indeed, James was strongly convinced that "no …

Nomos And Thanatos (Part B): Feminism As Jurisgenerative Transformation, Or Resistance Through Partial Incorporation? Part Ii, Richard F. Devlin Frsc

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

In Part A of this essay, "The Killing Fields", I developed a critique of the disciplinary impulses that underlie modern law and legal theory. Invoking a number of perspectives and a plurality of analyses, I proposed that male-stream legal theory and contemporary law both assume as inevitable, and legitimize as appropriate, the funnelling of violence through law. The problem with a funnel, however, is that it does not curtail or reduce that which is channelled through it. On the contrary, to funnel is to condense and to intensify. Viewed from this perspective, interpreted from the bottom up, law and legal …

Transcriptional Regulation Of Gene Expression In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Laurie A. Stargell, Kathleen M. Karrer, Martin A. Gorovsky Jan 1990

Transcriptional Regulation Of Gene Expression In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Laurie A. Stargell, Kathleen M. Karrer, Martin A. Gorovsky

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The only well-characterized study of gene expression in Tetrahymena thermophila (1) demonstrates that the temperature dependent expression of the Ser H3 gene is regulated at the level of mRNA stability. A run-on transcription assay was developed to determine if regulation of RNA stability was a major mechanism regulating gene expression in Tetrahymena or if transcriptional regulation dominates. The relative transcriptional activities of 14 Tetrahymena genes were determined in different physiological/developmental states (growing, starved and conjugating) in which many of the genes showed striking differences in RNA abundance. In every case except Ser H3, changes in transcription accompanied changes in RNA …

A Pocket Part Of Posey's: A Daring Expose Of Posey's Unreported Cases, Jim Paulsen, James Hambleton Jan 1990

A Pocket Part Of Posey's: A Daring Expose Of Posey's Unreported Cases, Jim Paulsen, James Hambleton

Faculty Scholarship

So you have never heard of Posey's Unreported Cases? Or, maybe you have, but you have recurring nightmares in which a judge fixes you with a steely glare and growls: "Well, counsel, it looks like Ms. so-and-so's citation to Posey's is directly on point. What do you say about that?" Fear no more! In this column, you will find what is undoubtedly the most in-depth scholarly investigation ever attempted of Posey's Unreported Cases.

On the surface, the nature of the beast is easily described: Posey's Unreported Cases is a two-volume collection of "consent cases" decided by the old …

Office Technology : A Determinant In The Organization Of Spaces, Se Hun Kim Jan 1990

Office Technology : A Determinant In The Organization Of Spaces, Se Hun Kim

Theses

Technological advances have initiated complexity in buildings and may also provide the means to manage it. Research in advanced technology development suggests new directions for development and application of advanced technologies to buildings.

The purpose of this research is to examine and develop an understanding of building related computer uses. This study is done by literature search and field survey. Through literature search the theoretical background is established. Through field survey practical guidelines are suggested.

Studies of social and physical organizational systems and building systems are surveyed, then computers and advanced technologies are introduced. This is to find out practical …

Soviet National Security Decision Making, Kurt M. Campbell, Jeffrey W. Legro Jan 1990

Soviet National Security Decision Making, Kurt M. Campbell, Jeffrey W. Legro

Political Science Faculty Publications

Winston Churchill's characterization of the Soviet Union as a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma may overstate Western understanding of the USSR's national security decision-making. The evidence in this domain is sparse, and what we do have is incomplete. Indeed, the Soviets have taken extraordinary steps to maintain the black box that shields how and why their decisions are made. With these caveats in mind, knowledge of Soviet decision-making can be summed up in a few general statements. First, the Soviet leadership is an integrated political-military body, where political authority is dominant, but where the professional military retains …

The Case Against A Right To Religion-Based Exemptions, Ellis M. West Jan 1990

The Case Against A Right To Religion-Based Exemptions, Ellis M. West

Political Science Faculty Publications

When, if ever, does the free exercise clause of the first amendment give an individual or organization the right to disobey with impunity a valid law of the state? This question is being discussed with increasing frequency and intensity because of the growing number of persons and groups who are going to the courts and claiming such a right on the grounds that the application of certain laws to them would burden their free exercise of religion. Almost all the individuals and some of the groups who claim such a right do so because the laws to which they object …

The "L-Word": A Short History Of Liberalism, Terence Ball, Richard Dagger Jan 1990

The "L-Word": A Short History Of Liberalism, Terence Ball, Richard Dagger

Political Science Faculty Publications

Hence the question: Are these good or bad times for liberalism? To answer, we shall need a broader perspective than a survey of contemporary developments can provide. We shall need to look back, that is, to see what liberalism was in order to understand what it has become. Only then can we assess its current condition and prospects-and appreciate how politics in the United States is largely an intramural debate between different wings of liberalism.

Studies On Adriamycin Side Effects On The Renal Function And Morphology In Rats, M El.Gindy, T Gamil, S Sirag Jan 1990

Studies On Adriamycin Side Effects On The Renal Function And Morphology In Rats, M El.Gindy, T Gamil, S Sirag

Mansoura Medical Journal

Adriamycin (ADR) is an anthracy-clic antibiotic (Di Marco et af., 1969). It is considered now to be a very effective and useful chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of many human solid tumors and malignant heamato-logical processes {Carter et al., 1972). However, its extensive use al doses adequate for effective antitumor therapy is restricted by the appearance of a severe cardiotoxicity (Adamson, 1974; Bristow et al., 1978; and Nagineni, 1985). Little is known about the effect of ADR on the kidney function and its relation to any pathological changes. Our study aims to reveal this relation after 4 and 8 weeks …

Municipal Issues And The Charter Of Rights: The Impact At The Grass Roots, A. Wayne Mackay, Kathryn Heckaman Jan 1990

Municipal Issues And The Charter Of Rights: The Impact At The Grass Roots, A. Wayne Mackay, Kathryn Heckaman

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Municipal institutions are the forgotten partners in the Canadian confederation. This is true in both political and legal terms. In political terms the agencies of local government are often under-valued. With respect to the law, the municipal level of government has too often been ignored. Both municipal councils and their related boards and tribunals have an important impact on the lives of citizens at the grass roots level. In carrying out their duties, municipal authorities exercise a wide range of discretionary powers and it is becoming increasingly important that they recognize the legal limits on their powers. The first and …

An Antitrust Analysis Of Sports League Contracts With Cable Networks, Stephen F. Ross Jan 1990

An Antitrust Analysis Of Sports League Contracts With Cable Networks, Stephen F. Ross

Faculty Scholarship

This Article discusses the proper antitrust treatment of package sales to cable. Part I considers whether the antitrust laws apply at all to such sales; it concludes that section one of the Sherman Act does apply and that neither the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 not baseball's historic exemption from the antitrust laws prevents antitrust scrutiny of these contracts. Part II explains why cable package sales should be analyzed under a rule of reason test focused on the effect of a sale on fan viewership. Finally, Part III responds to several possible objections to the rule of reason standard proposed …

Arbitration And The U.S. Supreme Court: A Plea For Statutory Reform, Thomas E. Carbonneau Jan 1990

Arbitration And The U.S. Supreme Court: A Plea For Statutory Reform, Thomas E. Carbonneau

Faculty Scholarship

This Article argues for stabilizing and preserving arbitration's necessary and valuable vocation in dispute resolution. It outlines the basic stages in the evolution of the American law of arbitration and studies the underlying motivation of each of its historical phases. It attributes vital significance to the legislative and decisional law developments that led to an early rehabilitation of arbitration in American law, beginning with the enactment of the United States Arbitration Act (FAA) in 1925 and continuing with the ratification of the New York Arbitration Convention and the elaboration of a "hospitable" federal caselaw. Eventually, these developments gave rise to …

Intoxication And Aggression, Jeffrey Fagan Jan 1990

Intoxication And Aggression, Jeffrey Fagan

Faculty Scholarship

Evidence of an association between use of illicit substances and aggressive behavior is pervasive. But the precise causal mechanisms by which aggression is influenced by intoxicants are still not well understood. Research on intoxication and aggression often has overlooked the nonviolent behavior of most substance users, controlled use of substances, and the evidence from other cultures of a weak or nonexistent relation between substance use and aggression. There is only limited evidence that ingestion of substances is a direct, pharmacological cause of aggression. The temporal order of substance use and aggression does not indicate a causal role for intoxicants. Research …
