"Trade Reform, The Key To The Future Of U.S. Farming", Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1990

"Trade Reform, The Key To The Future Of U.S. Farming", Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

I have been asked innumerable times why world agricultural trade reform is so important to U.S. farmers. Some of the people doing the asking are often afraid of what such reform might mean to U.S. agriculture. A question I occasionally ask back is, "What is there to fear?" If we are the efficient agricultural producers we say we are -- and I believe we are - then the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) offers American farmers an unprecedented opportunity to gain market share in the growing world markets for food. American agriculture has not …

‘Prairie Snow’ Penstemon, Dale T. Lindgren Jan 1990

‘Prairie Snow’ Penstemon, Dale T. Lindgren

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

‘Prairie Snow’ is a white-flowered, seedpropagated bulk population of Penstemon grandiflorus selected for home landscape use that also can be used for prairie and roadside plantings. It was released in 1988 in conjunction with, and to honor, the 10th anniversary of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. It is unique to this species because of its pure white flowers. A native population of P. grandiflorus was manipulated using a modified bulk population selection scheme so that plants with specific traits could be isolated from plants without the desired traits.

Two similar cultivars, Albus and Lena Seeba, have been mentioned in the literature. …

Influence Of Planting Depth And Interval To Initial Harvest On Yield And Plant Response Of Asparagus, Dale T. Lindgren Jan 1990

Influence Of Planting Depth And Interval To Initial Harvest On Yield And Plant Response Of Asparagus, Dale T. Lindgren

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Four planting depths and two time intervals ( l or 2 years) between transplanting and initial year of harvest of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) yield were compared for 4 years. Spear emergence and initial spring harvest date were delayed and susceptibility to spring frost injury was decreased with increasing planting depth (from S.O to 20.0 cm). Over years, crown depth increased for the shallowest planting and decreased for the deepest planting. Harvesting after 1 year vs. 2 years from planting reduced yield. There were no significant interactions between year of initial harvest and depth of planting.

The American Market For Indian Textiles, 1785-1820: In The Twilight Of Traditional Cloth Manufacture, Susan S. Bean Jan 1990

The American Market For Indian Textiles, 1785-1820: In The Twilight Of Traditional Cloth Manufacture, Susan S. Bean

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

A brisk trade in Indian cloth developed soon after the end of the American War of Independence in 1783 and continued to flourish until Congress enacted a prohibitive tariff in 1816 to protect the nascent U.S. textile manufacturing industry. For the period 1795-1805, U.S. trade with India well exceeded trade with all European nations combined for all commodities (Furber 1938:258). Cloth was the centerpiece of this trade: The piece goods imported in 1804-05, for instance, were about three times the value of all other goods from India, chiefly sugar, indigo, ginger, and a variety of spices and drugs (Bhagat 1970:42). …

Textiles In Trade In West Africa, Brigitte Menzel Jan 1990

Textiles In Trade In West Africa, Brigitte Menzel

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Textiles in Africa since some time have become a topic of research, much of which is focused on aspects of art. The at least equally important economic aspects (production, consumption, and trade) are still rather neglected.

When doing field research in West Africa it is impossible to overlook the fact that most of the textiles in use could not have been produced locally. This applies not only to the colorful printed cottons but as well to handmade textiles.

In Asante (Ghana) I found woolen fabrics, which obviously were hand-woven but must have come from somewhere else as sheep and goats …

Of Cabbages And Kings, Ellen S. Smart Jan 1990

Of Cabbages And Kings, Ellen S. Smart

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

This paper attempts to relate a small number of Mughal furnishing fabrics to their 17th C prices and to the purchasing power of Mughal money. There is no intent to give a comprehensive overview, but rather to see a few 17th C textiles, which today are rare and fabulously expensive, in terms of their original comparative cost. Information about the fabrics comes from the goods themselves and from contemporary Mughal paintings. Although inscriptions on the textiles contain some information about prices, several tables of textiles and prices are found in the Ain-i Akbari, a compendium on the mode of …

A Brief History Of The Textile Society Of America Summary Report By The President, Milton Sonday

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

After The Textile Museum decided to discontinue its Irene Emery Roundtables and die Centre International d'Etude des Textiles Anciens finally admitted it was not interested in an American branch, it became clear that an independent American group of textile enthusiasts should be formed to satisfy the many requests for such an organization. There had been an attempt to form a group which was called WHATS, but it never got off the ground. Peggy Gilfoy at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, one of the original organizers, was left guarding its small fund when it folded.

On April 3, 1987 a small …

Conditioning Of Sandhill Cranes During Fall Migration, Gary L. Krapu, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 1990

Conditioning Of Sandhill Cranes During Fall Migration, Gary L. Krapu, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Body mass of adult female and male sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) increased an average of 17 and 20%, respectively, from early September to late October on staging areas in central North Dakota and varied by year. Increases in body mass averaged 550 and 681 g among female and male G. c. canadensis, respectively, and 616 and 836 g among female and male G. c. rowani. Adult and juvenile G. c. rowani were lean at arrival, averaging 177 and 83 g of fat, respectively, and fat reserves increased to 677 and 482 g by mid-October. Fat-free dry …

Mirrorless Optical Bistability In A Nonlinear Absorbing Dielectric Film, Kevin L. Stokes, Ashok Puri Jan 1990

Mirrorless Optical Bistability In A Nonlinear Absorbing Dielectric Film, Kevin L. Stokes, Ashok Puri

Physics Faculty Publications

The optical transmissivity of a mirrorless, nonlinear, absorbing dielectric thin film is investigated numerically. The dielectric function in the film region is dependent on the intensity of the electromagnetic field. Multivalued solutions of transmissivity as a function of incident power are calculated for the steady-state wave equation. The numerical solution is applied to two different model dielectric functions. As the absorption parameter is increased, larger values of incident intensity are required to switch the systems between stable output states. Also, the peak values of transmissivity are reduced as the absorption is increased.
