Some "Do's" And "Don't'S" For Using Computers In Science Instruction, Glenn A. Sowell, Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

As science researchers and professors, we have had a fairly broad collection of experiences in using computers, from batch-processing and number crunching in large computer systems using FORTRAN and symbolic languages to teaching problem-solving courses for nonscience students using personal computers. While we claim no special computer expertise, we both own computers and are frequently called upon to offer advice to our colleagues who are greater novices than we are. Hence, on the basis of reflections on our experiences and observations of what we have seen other people and institutions do, we have compiled a list of “Do’s” and “Don’ts” …

Hydraulic Characteristics Of Rills, John E. Gilley, E. R. Kottwitz, J. R. Simanton Nov 1990

Hydraulic Characteristics Of Rills, John E. Gilley, E. R. Kottwitz, J. R. Simanton

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Rill density and rill flow rates were determined during rainfall simulation tests conducted at 11 sites located throughout the eastern United States. A mean rill density of 1.0 rills/m was found for the study locations. From measurements of the relative distribution of flow rates, a procedure is identified for partitioning flow between individual rills.

Regression equations were developed for relating rill width and hydraulic roughness coefficients to flow rate. Equations were also derived for predicting mean flow velocity from visually determined measurements of advance velocity. Information reported in this study can be used to estimate hydraulic characteristics of rills.

The Soil Sample

The starting point for any fertilizer program, regardless of the tillage system, is obtaining a representative soil sample. Without knowing which nutrients are needed, the questions of what fertilizer and how much to apply become irrelevant. Two types of soil samples should be obtained: the traditional, zero to 8-inch sample for general fertility (pH, phosphorus, potassium, organic matter, etc.) and deep, subsoil samples for nitrate. Subsoil samples for nitrate should be taken to a depth of at least 3 feet.

The problem of how to obtain a representative soil sample is particularly relevant in ridge-tilled fields. On …

Synchrotron Radiation Induced Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Thin Films From Metal Hexacarbonyls*, Derrick C. Mancini, Shikha Varma, John K. Simons, Richard A. Rosenberg, Peter A. Dowben Nov 1990

Synchrotron Radiation Induced Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Thin Films From Metal Hexacarbonyls*, Derrick C. Mancini, Shikha Varma, John K. Simons, Richard A. Rosenberg, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

We have studied the initial stages of synchrotron radiation [SR] induced chemical vapor deposition [CVD] of metal-containing thin films from metal hexacarbonyl gases. We have measured the dependence of the initial deposition rate upon gas pressure at room temperature. Substrates were exposed to SR for single fills of the electron storage ring at constant pressure of Mo(CO)6, Cr(CO)6, or W(CO) 6 gas. Deposition was monitored in situ by Auger electron spectroscopy using the SW as the excitation source. The presence of metal, carbon, and oxygen in the deposited films was observed, and the results are consistent …

Laser-Induced Detachment Processes In An Electric Field, Bo Gao, Anthony F. Starace Nov 1990

Laser-Induced Detachment Processes In An Electric Field, Bo Gao, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

An analytic momentum-space wave function for an electron in both laser and static uniform electric fields is presented. It is used to obtain analytic multiphoton detachment cross sections in a static, uniform electric field which include effects of static-field-induced electron-photon interactions. These general results are not restricted to weak laser intensities or to weak static-field strengths and depend only on (a) the electric dipole approximation and (b) the approximation that final-state electron-atom interactions are ignored. Four specific predictions of our general formulas for the most interesting case of linearly polarized light polarized along the static-field direction are presented for weakly …

Ab Initio Studies Of The Phase Transitions In K2Seo4, H. M. Lu, John R. Hardy Nov 1990

Ab Initio Studies Of The Phase Transitions In K2Seo4, H. M. Lu, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

An ab initio model is developed for the potentials in ionic molecular solids in which the electron covalency within the molecular ions substantially affects the interionic interactions. By treating the intermolecular and intramolecular interactions on the basis of the true electron charge densities of the molecular ions, this new model leads to an accurate parameter-free description of the potentialenergy surfaces for such crystals. We performed first-principles static structural relaxation, supercell molecular-dynamics simulation, and lattice-dynamics studies for the room-temperature paraelectric phase and the lower-temperature ferroelectric superstructure of K2SeO4 and predicted with good accuracy the transition from the former …

Predictions Of Cell Damage Rates For Lifesat Missions, Francis A. Cucinotta, William Atwell, Alva C. Hardy, Michael J. Golightly, John W. Wilson, Lawrence W. Townsend, Judy Shinn, John E. Nealy, Robert Katz Nov 1990

Predictions Of Cell Damage Rates For Lifesat Missions, Francis A. Cucinotta, William Atwell, Alva C. Hardy, Michael J. Golightly, John W. Wilson, Lawrence W. Townsend, Judy Shinn, John E. Nealy, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Radiological experiments with cell cultures are expected to be performed on Lifesat to study possible gravitational dependence on cellular response. Predictions of cell damage rates for well-studied systems are expected to help guide in the selection of orbits and the design of experiments. In this report we estimate the fractions of cell death and neoplastic transformation of C3H10T1/2 cells (cultured mouse cells) for the proposed Lifesat orbits. The parametric cellular track model of Katz et al. (refs. 1 and 2) is employed using cellular response parameters derived from the experiments of Yang et al. (refs. 3 and 4). The contributions …

Exercise Tolerance And Alcohol Intake: Blood Pressure Relation, G. Harley Hartung, Harold W. Kohl Iii, Steven N. Blair, Steven J. Lawrence, Ronald B. Harrist Nov 1990

Exercise Tolerance And Alcohol Intake: Blood Pressure Relation, G. Harley Hartung, Harold W. Kohl Iii, Steven N. Blair, Steven J. Lawrence, Ronald B. Harrist

Faculty Publications

The relations of systolic and diastolic blood pressures to alcohol intake and exercise tolerance levels in 15,612 men and 3,855 women were investigated. Alcohol intake was assessed by questionnaire and stratified into seven levels for men and six for women according to the ounces of ethanol consumed per week. Exercise tolerance was determined by maximal treadmill exercise testing and was categorized into six age-specific by sex-specific levels. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly related to both alcohol intake and exercise tolerance levels in both men and women. These relations, which were positive for alcohol and negative for exercise …

A Graphical Knowledge Level Approach For User-Database Interaction, K. Tan, H. Chan, Keng Siau Nov 1990

A Graphical Knowledge Level Approach For User-Database Interaction, K. Tan, H. Chan, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The authors propose a novel user interface, the Graphical Knowledge Level interface, for user-database interaction. This interface addresses two of the current research problems: the semantic inadequacy of the relational model and the logical data dependence of the relational languages. The interface is more user-friendly than the SOL interface and the Universal Relation interface, as it employs the graphical approach. The semantic inadequacy problem is alleviated by using an enhanced entity-relationship model. This data model includes abstraction concepts such as aggregation, generalization, and categorization. A formal, high-level Graphical Knowledge Level Query Language, GKQL, which provides for both logical and physical …

Afterword: Voices And Violence-- A Dialogue, Ellen Wright Clayton, Jay Alexander Clayton Nov 1990

Afterword: Voices And Violence-- A Dialogue, Ellen Wright Clayton, Jay Alexander Clayton

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

When organizing this Symposium on the topic of "Law, Literature, and Social Change," we asked whether current trends in literature and in literary, social, and legal theory actually could play a role in bringing about social change. The authors gathered at this Symposium responded to this question in very different ways. As we read their articles and comments, however, and as we talked about their various approaches, some common themes began to emerge. Narrative seemed important. The way people split public life off from private experience came up frequently. But violence seemed to be on everyone's mind.

Andrew Bryan, Michael Jandrlich Nov 1990

Andrew Bryan, Michael Jandrlich

Savannah Biographies

Andrew Bryan was born around 1716 on a slave plantation near Goose Creek, South Carolina. Sometime around 1765 he was moved to Brampton Plantation located three miles west of Savannah, Georgia. In 1775 Jonathan Bryan, Andrew’s master, gave him the use of a barn to use as a church. In 1788 a Reverend Abraham Marshall ordained Andrew and, with 45 newly baptized people, a church was formed with Andrew Bryan as its pastor. This was the beginning of the first black Baptist church in Savannah. In 1790 Andrew was able to purchase his freedom from William Bryan, son of Jonathan, …

Perceptions Of Fairness In The Frustration Effect: An Attributional Analysis, David T. Van Dyke Nov 1990

Perceptions Of Fairness In The Frustration Effect: An Attributional Analysis, David T. Van Dyke

Student Work

Theories of both distributive (Adams, 1963) and procedural justice (Thibaut & Walker, 1975) have been demonstrated to be accurate in describing subjective evaluations of fairness in a wide variety of circumstances. However, a phenomenon known as the frustration effect (e.g. Folger, 1977) results in perceptions of fairness that are incongruent with the predictions of these two theories. This study attempts to explain the discrepant results in terms of attribution theory as it was proposed by Weiner (1985). By manipulating and measuring the attributions made by subjects, the attributional explanation was tested. The results of this experiment were not supportive of …
