Savannah Biographies

Richard Dennis, son of John Dennis and Mary Jacque (maiden name), was born in the state of New Jersey in 1770. During Richard's lifetime he made his way south into the state of Georgia where he established himself within Savannah as a merchant. By 1800 Dennis was fully active in the local business society and town government. If duty called then.Richard Dennis answered because, not only was he a successful merchant but Dennis was appointed commander of the local Savannah militia.

A Summons To Memphis: Exploring The Life And Times Of The Reverend Mr. George White (1802-1887), Thomas G. Wilkes

Savannah Biographies

A native of Charleston, S. C., he removed to Savannah, Georgia, in 1822. As principal of the Chatham Academy, and for fourteen years of his own Savannah Academy, he acquired fame; he is best remembered by the brilliant, Classical scholarship of his students. Ordained an Episcopal clergyman in 1836, he engaged in mission work, preaching to seamen and to the Negro population, also establishing a church. For over sixty years he was married to Elizabeth Millen of Savannah; they had eight children, three surviving them. A century ago, Oct. 29, 1890, the man who committed the most horrible and notorious murders in the history of the state of Georgia was publicly executed on the gallows. He killed more persons on a single occasion than any other murderer in America who did not use a gun, explosives, fire, or an automobile.
