Teacher education has come under scrutiny in the recent past because teacher educators are recognizing a gap between what they have traditionally taught in their classrooms, and what new teachers are doing in theirs. Somehow the messages about the effective ways to teach have not been getting through. The solution to the problems seems fairly simple. If beginning teachers are to be effective, they must have a model of the various instructional techniques which can be implemented. Teacher educators, then, must model these techniques in their education courses. In this way, the message clearly comes through, that what is modeled …

Modeling An Expository Text Structure Strategy In Think Alouds, Christine J. Gordon

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Several current notions used in combination can contribute to better teaching of comprehension of expository text. These include knowledge of text structure, strategic reading, and the think-aloud procedure. Knowledge of text structure is knowledge of the author's underlying organization of the ideas presented. The think-aloud procedure is suggested as the vehicle by which to demonstrate a strategic readers' use of text structure knowledge while reading. It's a "talk-as-you go" or "talk-as-you read" procedure. Strategies are defined as systematic plans that readers can use flexibly, adapting them to particular reading situations or contexts (Duffy and Roehler, 1987). Strategies are thus generalizable …

For Hamiltonian systems with two degrees of freedom, quantum invariants as constructed via time averages of dynamical variables in energy eigenstates provide a convenient representation of quantum nonintegrability effects in the form of a topographical map of quantized actions.

Post-surgical cold applications are beneficial to orthopedic surgery patients. However, their use is limited because of the difficulty in maintaining a constant temperature, increased need for attention, and unwanted leaks or condensation from ice bags. Twenty-one arthroscopic surgery patients were divided into three groups: a Dura*Kold cold pack group, an Aircast Cryo/cuff compression dressing group, and a control group. Six dependent variables were examined: subjective pain ratings three and 48 hours after surgery, a subjective rating of functional activity 48 hours after surgery, skin temperature for three hours after surgery, and pain medication consumed during three hours and 48 hours …

The development of high-voltage semiconductor devices has been hampered by the occurrence of flashover at the surface of the semiconductor. The physical mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon are not understood. We present new empirical information which clarifies the processes responsible for surface flashover in a vacuum ambient by showing clearly that in flashover current flows primarily inside the semiconductor surface rather than in the ambient. This observation is in fundamental disagreement with the standard model for vacuum flashover of insulator surfaces.

Three models for the dielectric function ε_x (hv) of Ag_xGa1_1-xAs are reviewed. All are based on measured optical constants at discrete compositions. The validity of each mode1 near critical pint energies, and otherwise, is evaluated. Only the energy-shift model is appropriate over the entire available spectrum ( 1.5-6.0 eV), including the band-gap (E₀) region.

Creative drama and poetry are often neglected, yet they are important aspects of a holistic approach to the language arts. Drama encourages children to use language for meaningful purposes by actively involving them and motivating them to read, write, listen, and speak. Poetry exposes children to expressive and descriptive language used in many creative forms. Poetry also involves children and motivates them to read and write poetry of their own.

Two years ago we left the insulated environment of the university setting to return to the chaos and excitement of full time teaching in two first-grade classrooms. Our colleagues wondered why we felt this need, and the teachers in the schools where we were going were pleased, but skeptical, about our abilities to cope with the tumult of classroom teaching again. We often asked ourselves why were we embarking upon this bold, new adventure. After some contemplation of the question, we decided there were at least four good reasons for returning. Transitions In Reading Instruction: Handling Contradictions In Beliefs And Practice, Maureen Siera, Martha Combs

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Reconciling whole language philosophy with traditional classroom reading instruction requires redefining beliefs about reading processes that, for most of us, are deeply embedded in years of basal reading instruction. Such re defining has the potential of creating conflicts between curricular beliefs and instructional practices. Whole language and basal skills instruction, according to Goodman (1989), are contradictory and incompatible practices. In contrast, Hemysfeld (1989) suggests that it is appropriate to combine the best aspects of skills instruction and whole language into one approach. While contradictions may exist initially, perhaps such contradictions will resolve themselves as educators redefine professional beliefs.

Company Paternalism And The Hidden-Investment Process: Identification Of The “Right Type” For Line Managers In Leading Japanese Organizations, Mary Uhl-Bien, Pamela S. Tierney, George B. Graen, Mitsuru Wakabayashi

This study investigates belief in company paternalism as an indicator of the “right type” for line managers in leading Japanese corporations. In five companies, 1,075 line managers were surveyed about their belief in company paternalism, their experience with both the formal and informal career-development systems within their company, their working relationships with their immediate superior (LMX), and their overall job satisfaction. Results indicated that belief in company paternalism contributed as hypothesized to formal career investments, informal career investments (including both self-investment and supervisor investment), LMX, and overall job satisfaction. These relationships held true both before and after experiences with the …
