Causes Of Juvenile Delinquency In Jordan, Ayed A. Irfaifeh
Causes Of Juvenile Delinquency In Jordan, Ayed A. Irfaifeh
Dissertations
This dissertation sought to examine the extent to which a set of social bonding factors were helpful in preventing delinquency in the Jordanian society. A sample of 147 juveniles (male eleventh-graders) from seven public high schools in the Tafielah Covernate and its localities completed a self-reported survey. Their answers were useful in ascertaining whether or not Hirschi's (1969) social control theory was indeed applicable cross-culturally, especially in a society dissimilar to the United States. Within the theoretical confines of Hirschi's theory, the descriptive data suggest that Jordanian youth have similar cultural beliefs, values, attitudes, and affiliation to the convention order …

Of Berry Pickers, Shanty Boys, And The Jack Pine Bird: Patterns Of Settlement And Subsistence In Nineteenth Century Oscoda County, Rose Lockwood Moore
Masters Theses
The provisions of the Homestead Act of 1863 (U.S. Congress 1862a) required a settlement pattern of dispersed single families on small tracts of land, which, in turn, affected the subsistence strategies available to the homesteaders. The interaction of federal land legislation with the ecosystem of southern Oscoda County resulted in marked spatial and temporal differences between the tracts that were homesteaded as opposed to those acquired for their timber. A sample population of quarter sections was analyzed in terms of the physical and biotic environments, date of entry, and use. The analysis confirmed that the timber lands were located on …
The Conjunctive Novel: Form And Function, Joanne Ruth Gowey Desotelle
The Conjunctive Novel: Form And Function, Joanne Ruth Gowey Desotelle
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this paper is to identify the function of characters who recur in more than one text by the same author.
Chapter One reviews critical opinions regarding repeating characters. These range from Percy Lubbock who believes that the other lives of a character should be ignored or they will distort the truth of the individual novels, to Michel Butor who recognizes that repeating characters serve a unique function within the texts. The term “conjunctive” novel is coined to identify texts which are conjoined by repeating characters.
Applying Mikhail Bakhtin’s terminology, Chapter Two argues that conjunctive novels are double-voiced …

Class And Community In Frontier Colorado, Richard Hogan
Class And Community In Frontier Colorado, Richard Hogan
Kansas Open Books
Spurred by the Gold Rush of 1859, settlers of diverse backgrounds and nationalities trekked to Colorado and began building towns. Existing accounts of their struggles and those of townbuilders throughout the American West focus on boom-or-bust economics, rampant boosterism, and bitter social conflicts. This, according to sociologist Richard Hogan, is not the whole story. In Class and Community in Frontier Colorado Hogan offers a fresh perspective on the frontier townbuilding experience. He argues that townbuilding in Colorado was not, as some have suggested, monopolized by local boosters or national business interests. It was, instead, a complex, dynamic process that reflected …

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Calculates the likely population of Orcs in Middle-earth at various times based on Tolkien’s use of the military terms host, army, and legion. Uses The Silmarillion and several volumes of The History of Middle-earth to “show a developing concept of Orc military organization and, by inference, an idea of Orc demographics.”

A Grief Observed: Fact Or Fiction?, Mary V. Borhek
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Disagrees with Walter Hooper’s contention that Lewis’s marriage was never consummated. Uses excerpts from A Grief Observed as well as letters of Lewis, Davidman, and others. Discusses claims that A Grief Observed is fictionalized, not autobiographical, but concludes the latter is true.

The Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Meeting of the Law and Society Association: The Ice Cream Social
The family has returned to Madison, Wisconsin where it all started. The old-timers are in a mood for celebration and self-congratulation. The past presidents are serving ice cream to a huge crowd of people from all over the world. These founding fathers (the first female president is still in office and isn't yet eligible to serve ice cream) look pleased. This is a world they have made. It is full of old friends, recent students, ardent disciples, a few critics who have at least taken them …
