Impact Of Global Warming And Cooling On Midwestern Agriculture, Louis M. Thompson Jan 1990

Impact Of Global Warming And Cooling On Midwestern Agriculture, Louis M. Thompson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The global warming since 1980 has been greater than it was during the warming trend from 1880 to 1940. This has caused concern that the very warm years of 1987 and 1988 might have been associated with greenhouse warming. However, the cooling trend from 1940 to 1980 occurred during a rapid buildup in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Although there may have been some greenhouse warming since 1880, the unusual warmth of 1987 and 1988 may have been caused by changes in the temperature of the equatorial Pacific Ocean, and changes in transparency of the atmosphere or ocher phenomena acting …

Richard Bovbjerg And The Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Michael J. Lannoo Jan 1990

Richard Bovbjerg And The Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Michael J. Lannoo

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In the spring of 1977, in Ames, a struggling biology major who had earlier shown some promise was ordered by his advisor: "Go to Lakeside Lab and take Dick Bovbjerg's Aquatic Ecology course." I did and it worked. I've parlayed that early potential into a career. And like so many others I return to Lakeside, the first time to take another course, then to do my Master's research. More recently I come back to teach the Field Vertebrate Zoology course. Likewise, Dick has shifted from mentor to colleague, and we've co-authored a paper (Lannoo and Bovbjerg, 1985). Now, I am …

Climatic Influences On Annual Variations In Water Transparency In Lake West Okoboji, Roger W. Bachmann Jan 1990

Climatic Influences On Annual Variations In Water Transparency In Lake West Okoboji, Roger W. Bachmann

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Secchi disk transparencies, chlorophyll a concentrations, and total phosphorus concentrations were studied in Lake West Okoboji, Iowa, in the summers of 1971-7 3 and 1987-89. The average summer Secchi disk transparencies varied from a low of 2.5 to a high of 5.5 m during the study. The variations in the transparency of lake West Okoboji from year to year seem to be related to climatic factors such as the amounts of spring precipitation in the watershed and probably reflect changes in the annual inputs of plant nutrients. There is some indication that climatic conditions that cause the period of deep …

Holocene Vegetational Changes In Eastern Iowa, R. G. Baker, C. A. Chumbley, P. M. Witinok, H. K. Kim Jan 1990

Holocene Vegetational Changes In Eastern Iowa, R. G. Baker, C. A. Chumbley, P. M. Witinok, H. K. Kim

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Pollen and plant macrofossil analysis from three sites along an east-west transect in southeastern Iowa provide evidence for Holocene vegetational development. Colo Marsh at the west end of the transect is relatively complete, with a late-glacial spruce zone ending about 11,500 yr B.P.; a deciduous forest zone from about 11,500 to 8300; a prairie zone from 8300 to 4500, and prairie with oak from 4500 to presettlement times.

Sediments from the site at the Indian Creek Nature Center, midway in the transect, date only from about 6000 to 1600 yrs B. P. This site also was dominantly prairie from 6000 …

[Review Of] Jamaica Kincaid. Annie John, Elizabeth A. Mcneil Jan 1990

[Review Of] Jamaica Kincaid. Annie John, Elizabeth A. Mcneil

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Annie John, even though set in the West Indies and about a black Caribbean girl, is a work whose universally felt experience goes beyond allowing the novel to be neatly categorized as a piece of "ethnic" or "women's" writing. Born on Antigua, the island in which she sets the novel, Jamaica Kincaid catches many of the ways of being peculiar to this place. Maybe it is because Kincaid makes the setting home that we as readers find it so easy to slip into the story.

Paula Gunn Allen, Elizabeth I. Hanson Jan 1990

Paula Gunn Allen, Elizabeth I. Hanson

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

“The breed is an Indian who is not an Indian.”
Paula Gunn Allen, “A Stranger in My Own Life”

At the center of Paula Gunn Allen’s vision of self and art is an individual alienated within. For Allen the idea of the “breed” reflects a preoccupation with alienation as a personal and as an aesthetic experience. Allen’s biography, her understanding of Native American literature, and her works of art and criticism are informed by the consciousness that “breeds” are aliens to traditional Native Americans and yet also aliens among whites. To know Allen’s life and work is to reflect deeply …

Museum Collection Care Problems And California's Old Loan Legislation, Judith L. Teichman Jan 1990

Museum Collection Care Problems And California's Old Loan Legislation, Judith L. Teichman

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

A number of museums have problems associated with objects which have been in their custody for many years. Sometimes it is unclear whether the objects were originally loans or gifts; in other cases, the lender has died or otherwise lost contact with the museum. This Essay describes what has led to these situations and the resulting dilemmas, including the difficulty of litigating claims to the objects. It describes the reasoning behind the factual support for various provisions in the California legislation governing loans to museums. The author concludes that the legislation will prevent a recurrence of the identified problems and …

George Wharton James, Peter Wild Jan 1990

George Wharton James, Peter Wild

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

The teenager mouthing poems before a mirror in an English industrial town would go on to enthrall overflow audiences at the San Diego Exposition of 1916. Away from the podium, he would earn large reputations as an anthropologist, explorer, social reformer, and booster of his adopted land. Along the way, he picked up some smudges: accusations of lying, of questionable tactics in selfpromotion, and of heinous sexual acts. Above all, he would write, producing much curious froth, such as The Story of Captain: The Horse with the Human Brain. The title alone shows how far George Wharton James would …

A Survey Of The Benthic Macroinvertebrates Of The Big Spring Basin, Iowa, Jack O. Kennedy, John G. Miller Iii Jan 1990

A Survey Of The Benthic Macroinvertebrates Of The Big Spring Basin, Iowa, Jack O. Kennedy, John G. Miller Iii

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Benthic macroinvertebrates were collected in the Big Spring Basin, located in northeastern Iowa, from May through October 1988. The purpose of the study was to develop baseline information on the benthic organisms present in the basin. A total of 167 taxa including seven species of leeches, five genera of snails, three genera of clams, one crayfish genus and over 150 taxa of aquatic insects were identified with the majority of the organisms having been reported in Iowa previously. Benthic organisms not usually encountered in Iowa include the planarian, Cura formanii; the isopod, Lirceus; the beedes, Enrxhrus, Hydrophilus, and llybius; the …

Climate Trends In Iowa, Richard E. Carlson Jan 1990

Climate Trends In Iowa, Richard E. Carlson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Long-term trends for various weather elements are presented for the period 1900-1988. Summer and winter season, and annual air temperature patterns are statistically weak because of large inrerannual variability, but trends are evident. There was a general warming from 1900 until the 40's, with a leveling or slight cooling following. Since the mid-70's, a warming trend seems to be taking place, but this cannot be confirmed. Spring season air temperatures showed no trend except that the most recent 4 years (1985-1988) were decidedly warmer than normal. Winter season air temperatures showed a change in trend in the 30's, but the …

Computed Normal Range Of Iowa Statewide July Precipitation, H. C. Vaughan, D. S. Sheets, G. R. White Jan 1990

Computed Normal Range Of Iowa Statewide July Precipitation, H. C. Vaughan, D. S. Sheets, G. R. White

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Iowa summer rainfall distributions are examined to identify small-scale anomalies. Examination of extremely wet and dry summer months shows that large rain amounts fall mainly in small, cellular areas for both extremely wet and dry months. These configurations result from individual rainfall events. Analysis of the distribution of mean July rainfall across the state reveals significant anomalous wet and dry regions that contrast with the background, east-west rainfall gradient. Because of the skewed nature of summer rainfall distributions, the median value is used to represent a more realistic expected rainfall amount for any given year. Some parts of the stare …

Tell-Tail Adaptations For Respiration And Rapid Escape In A Freshwater Oligochaete (Lumbriculus Variegatus Mull.), Charles D. Drewes Jan 1990

Tell-Tail Adaptations For Respiration And Rapid Escape In A Freshwater Oligochaete (Lumbriculus Variegatus Mull.), Charles D. Drewes

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The aquatic oligochaete, Lumbrimlus variegatus (Order Lumbriculida; Family Lumbriculidae), utilizes a combination of postural and anatomical specializations that enhance gas exchange across the dorsal surface of posterior segments as these segments lay exposed at the air-water interface. Predator avoidance by exposed posterior segments is enhanced by neurobehavioral mechanisms involving a well-developed lateral giant nerve fiber system that mediates rapid escape withdrawal of the worm's tail in response to shadow or mechanosensory stimuli.

Time To Metamorphosis As A Function Of Larval Size In A Population Of Ambystoma Tigrinum Salamanders Consisting Of Cannibal And Typical Morph Phenotypes, Michael J. Lannoo, Michael P. Sweet, Nancy M. Ladehoff, Edmund S. Fangman, William B. Collins Jan 1990

Time To Metamorphosis As A Function Of Larval Size In A Population Of Ambystoma Tigrinum Salamanders Consisting Of Cannibal And Typical Morph Phenotypes, Michael J. Lannoo, Michael P. Sweet, Nancy M. Ladehoff, Edmund S. Fangman, William B. Collins

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Salamander larvae of the species Ambystoma tigrinum are dimorphic in northwestern Iowa. In addition to common typical morphs, there exist rare, specialized cannibal morphs, which are induced environmentally by crowding. Cannibal morph phenotypes are characterized morphologically by their large size, proportionately large heads and hypertrophied vomerine teeth, and behaviorally by facultative cannibalism. During metamorphosis amphibians are particularly sensitive to predation. To help understand why cannibal morphs are uncommon, we have raised cannibal and typical morphs in isolation and under crowded conditions to compare the timing and duration of metamorphosis between these morphs. Results show that larger larvae, most of which …

An Interpretation Of Hustedt's Terms "Schattenlinie", "Perlenreihe" And "Hocker" Using Specimens Of The Cyclotella Radiosa-Complex, C. Distinguenda, Hust., And C. Cyclopuncta Nov. Sp., Hannelore Hakansson, John R. Carter

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

With the help of light- and scanning electron micrographs HUSTEDT'S terms "Schattenlinie", "Perlenrcihe", and "Hocker" are explained using specimens in the Cydotella radiosa complex, and C. distinguenda HUST. The complicated history of C. operculata (AG.) KUTZ., published elsewhere, has shown that C. distinguenda HUST. is the correct name to be used for this taxon. In this connection the new nomenclatural combination C. distinguenda var. unipunctata nov. comb. is proposed.

Morphological differences are discussed and the possibility of different "unipunctata" species is shown. Distinct morphological features found indicate the necessiry to describe a new species: C. cyclopuncta nov. sp. rather than …

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Because their flowers can be cross- and/or self-pollinated Verbena stricta, V hastata and V urticifolia are facultatively xenogamous. We suggest the flowers can be cross-pollinated because I) the fruit set of caged plants was substantially lower than that of open-pollinated plants, i.e. pollinators were necessary for typical fruit set and 2) the flowers of each species attracted a diverse array of hymenopteran, dipteran and lepidopteran pollinators that were capable of moving pollen between plants. Self-pollination was low due to the spatial separation of anthers and stigmas and/or an angled corolla that decreased the likelihood of pollen dropping from the anthers …

Status And Contract In Surrogate Motherhood: An Illumination Of The Surrogacy Debate, Janet L. Dolgin Jan 1990

Status And Contract In Surrogate Motherhood: An Illumination Of The Surrogacy Debate, Janet L. Dolgin

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

For reasons rooted in its own evolution, society in the West is, at present, ambivalent about the increasingly impressive solutions offered by reproductive technology to the growing prevalence of infertility. And this ambivalence is precisely reflected in law, which seeks both to protect and to discourage such technology in general, and its embodiment in particular, in surrogate motherhood.

The article begins by providing the historical and social context indispensable to an understanding of current family law, including the law of surrogacy. It then defines the ideological and existential status of this law: essentially its ambivalence regarding the competing claims of …
