Local Textile Trading Systems In Indonesia: An Example From Flores Island, Roy W. Hamilton Jan 1990

Local Textile Trading Systems In Indonesia: An Example From Flores Island, Roy W. Hamilton

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Several of the papers presented at this symposium deal with the trade of textiles over long distances, from one continent to another. Such trade systems undeniably had tremendous impact on the societies involved, but in many parts of the world individuals and communities are bound together in much smaller circles of trade that are equally formative. In this paper I will discuss a tiny network of textile trade that involves the carrying of cloth to neighboring villages over mountain paths and along surf-swept beaches. Trading systems on this scale are as much the rule as the exception and our understanding …

Toba Batak Textile Inventions, Sandra A. Niessen Jan 1990

Toba Batak Textile Inventions, Sandra A. Niessen

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

INTRODUCTION

This article focuses on fruits of looms worked by Toba Batak weavers in the Silindung Valley, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Silindung Valley weavings are characteristically bright and fashionable. They are described by the Batak themselves and by visitors from outside as the "least traditional" of Batak woven goods. They are also surging in popularity throughout all of Toba and increasingly making inroads into the market replacing the old-style textiles which are larger, of coarser yarn, and deeper/sober in colour. It is the modern style of Batak textile which today commands the highest prices locally. "Connoisseurs" of Indonesian textiles, however, usually …

Silk In European And American Trade Before 1783: A Commodity Of Commerce Or A Frivolous Luxury?, Natalie Rothstein Jan 1990

Silk In European And American Trade Before 1783: A Commodity Of Commerce Or A Frivolous Luxury?, Natalie Rothstein

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

This outline is taken from ray as yet unpublished book on The English Silk Industry 1700-1825, and especially from the chapters on raw silk and the distribution of the woven material. In addition, I have widened the scope for this talk to discuss the subject more generally. In terms of general economic history the quantities of silk produced and sold are minuscule but there are a lot of instructive points to be made which are of general importance - as well as some very pretty objects. The latter are "documents" in the French sense as well as works of art …

Modern Traditions: The Impact Of The Trade In Traditional Textiles On The Sakaka Of Northern Potosi, Bolivia, Elayne L. Zorn Jan 1990

Modern Traditions: The Impact Of The Trade In Traditional Textiles On The Sakaka Of Northern Potosi, Bolivia, Elayne L. Zorn

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

An elegantly dressed woman, wearing the handwoven clothing characteristic of her ethnic group, stands in front of a vendor displaying the latest machine-woven shawls from Bolivia's capital city, La Paz. The women, her daughter, and friends have just walked five hours from their rural home to attend an annual festival in the region's only town. The merchant, a young man of indigenous origin, wearing jeans, a jacket, sneakers, and a baseball cap, urges her to try on his merchandise. Glancing at her women friends for support, she opens the large safety pin holding closed her handwoven shawl and deftly slips …

Barns And Farms, Christin J. Mamiya Jan 1990

Barns And Farms, Christin J. Mamiya

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The art of Ed Ruscha has been a consistent and important presence on the art scene since 1960. Yet his works have not received the high visibility media coverage that the work of many of his peers, such as Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol, have garnered. This situation can, in part, be attributed to the fact that contemporary art criticism has tended to center around clearly defined movements, and Ruscha's work has resisted easy categorization. In addition, interpretations of his work have shifted over the past few decades--his work has been cited in discussions of Pop art, Conceptual art and, …

Indian Textiles For The Thai Market: A Royal Prerogative?, John Guy Jan 1990

Indian Textiles For The Thai Market: A Royal Prerogative?, John Guy

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The historical trade in Indian textiles to Thailand can be well documented from the beginning of the seventeenth century. Archaeological as well as textual sources allow our understanding of this trade to the region to be pushed back to the late thirteenth century, when Indian textiles had already assumed a high status at the court of Angkor.

In the course of the Ayudhyan period the control of this trade appears to have been secured by the Thai king and nobility. The earliest European accounts of trade with Thailand refer to the central role the king assumed, as both the dispenser …

[Review Of] Clara E. Rodriguez. Puerto Ricans Born In The U.S.A, Jesse M. Vazquez Jan 1990

[Review Of] Clara E. Rodriguez. Puerto Ricans Born In The U.S.A, Jesse M. Vazquez

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

It may be apocryphal by now, but it has often been said, and it is repeated again by Rodriguez in her most recent contribution to the literature that "Puerto Ricans still hold the dubious distinction of being among the most researched and least understood people in the United States, if not the world. "Rodriguez's use of the existing voluminous literature on the Puerto Rican experience certainly reinforces this widely held belief. Puerto Ricans are the second largest Latino ethnic group in the United States, and in New York City one out of every eight people is Puerto Rican. This is …

[Review Of] John R. Salter. Jackson Mississippi, Allene Jones

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Jackson Mississippi is a fascinating book written about the Civil Rights Movement in Jackson, Mississippi in the sixties. The author, John Salter, a white outsider and sociologist who served as advisor and organizer of the Civil Rights Movement in Jackson is to be commended for his ability to write about the movement in such a vivid and moving manner. Salter does an excellent job in describing the many problems encountered in striking out against the many injustices that existed in Mississippi.

A Study Of Planned Organizational Change At General Dynamics, Richard A. Barker Edd Jan 1990

A Study Of Planned Organizational Change At General Dynamics, Richard A. Barker Edd

Dissertations

A case study approach was used to evaluate organizational change that occurred between 1986 and 1989 at General Dynamics Corporation. The purpose of the study was to determine how persons in leading positions can realistically expect to plan and implement significant, planned organizational changes. The changes specifically studied were those which resulted from the planning and implementation of the Ethics Program. The Ethics Program at General Dynamics was examined not only as a case example of a planned, intended change, but as a vehicle for broad strategic goals pertaining to human resources management. Historic data from corporate documents and surveys, …

Nonverbal Communication From The Other Side: Speaking Body Language, John L. Barkai Jan 1990

Nonverbal Communication From The Other Side: Speaking Body Language, John L. Barkai

San Diego Law Review

In this Article, Professor Barkai highlights the relationship between nonverbal communication and the legal profession. The author notes that lawyers are quickly realizing importance of nonverbal behavior in determining the nature of communication and the relationship between the communicators. As such, he sets out to define a broader and more universal role for conscious nonverbal communication in law. His analysis covers the mechanics of body language and the importance of nonverbal communication in the law office whether dealing with other attorneys, witnesses, or clients. Using research drawn from the social sciences, the author concludes that lawyers can consciously speak body …
