His Name Was Jonas: A Biography Of Jonas Swensson, Emmet E. Eklund Jan 1988

His Name Was Jonas: A Biography Of Jonas Swensson, Emmet E. Eklund

Augustana Historical Society Publications

Abstract:

The life of Jonas Swensson (1828-1873) presents a reversal of the common notion that sons of famous fathers often live in the shadow of their fathers’ fame. For Jonas Swensson was overshadowed by the fame of his illustrious son, Carl Aaron. Both the fame of his son and his own early death, at age forty-five, have tended to obscure the noteworthy accomplishments of Jonas Swensson. Yet Swensson played a significant role in the shaping of the Augustana Lutheran Church in the last half of the 19th century. His contributions to parish and higher education, mission, congregational life, and the …

Unique, Novel, And Unsound Adversary Ethic, Thomas L. Shaffer Jan 1988

Unique, Novel, And Unsound Adversary Ethic, Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

The dominant ethic in the American legal profession in 1988 is the adversary ethic. The adversary ethic, in the words of the late Justice Abe Fortas, claims that "[l]awyers are agents, not principals; and they should neither criticize nor tolerate criticism based upon the character of the client whom they represent or the cause that they prosecute or defend. They cannot and should not accept responsibility for the client's practices." This ethic is the principal—and often the only—reference point in professional discussions. Although it is embedded in our professional codes, our cases, and our law offices, this Article argues that …

The Legal Ethics Of Belonging, Thomas L. Shaffer Jan 1988

The Legal Ethics Of Belonging, Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

Socrates went around Athens telling law teachers and law students that their highest concern should be to be good people. And, he said, the next and consequent concern of the profession should be to show the citizens of Athens how to be good people. For Socrates, as for virtually all of classical moral philosophy and much of Jewish and Christian moral theology, ethical discussion is discussion about the good person. When we talk about Aristotle's man of practical wisdom, or when we talk about heroes, saints, role models, paragons, or professional examplars, it is the good person we are talking …

Saint Vincent De Paul And Human Formation, Jaime Corera C.M. Jan 1988

Saint Vincent De Paul And Human Formation, Jaime Corera C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul’s approach to formation is discussed. He felt it was essential to keep “the knowledge of Jesus Christ crucified” at the center of such efforts. Jaime Corera offers Vincent’s formation of Antoine Portail and Francois du Coudray as case studies. These two confreres played many important roles in the Congregation, and Vincent adapted his approach to suit the talents and personalities of each man, with varying degrees of success. Vincent’s formation of the clergy is described, which he mainly saw as step toward the greater work of serving the poor. Therefore, humility in the clergy was vital, and …
