The Roles Of Youth In Society: A Reconceptualization, Ruthanne Kurth-Schai Jan 1988

The Roles Of Youth In Society: A Reconceptualization, Ruthanne Kurth-Schai

School K-12

The 1980s have been characterized as a decade of platforms for educational change. In 19S3 alone, five reports were released by national task forces and commissions, all expressing serious concern for the future of youth and society, and all proposing recommendations for ways in which educational policies and practices might be altered, to address such concerns.

Establishing Paternity Through Hla Testing: Utah Standards For Admissibility, Sylvia Iannucci Jan 1988

Establishing Paternity Through Hla Testing: Utah Standards For Admissibility, Sylvia Iannucci

Utah Law Review

In Kofford v. Flora , the Utah Supreme Court took judicial notice that HLA (or white blood cell) testing is now sufficiently reliable to be admissible as scientific evidence and held that "foundational evidence as to the validity of the basic principles [of HLA testing] may be dispensed with in this jurisdiction in the future. The primary legal significance of this type of evidence is its use in determining paternity. In a paternity action, the defendant is faced with "the imposition of a life-long relationship with significant financial, legal, and moral dimensions." Unlike any other civil judgment, the establishment of …

Graduate Research Papers

Comissioned [sic]by President Carter, the Global 2000 Report To The President (1982), stated that for hundreds of millions of the desperately poor, the outlook for food and other necessities of life will be no better in the year 2000. For many it will be worse. Life for most people on earth will be more precarious in 2000 than it is now unless nations of the world act decisively to alter current trends. Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Legal Issues Involving Children, Robert E. Shepherd Jr. Jan 1988

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Legal Issues Involving Children, Robert E. Shepherd Jr.

University of Richmond Law Review

This article last year noted the disturbing increase in the number of reported cases involving individuals prosecuted for the sexual abuse of children, and the persistence of legislative efforts to address the profound difficulties encountered by young children called as witnesses in those cases. This year, the General Assembly finally yielded to the urgings of those seeking changes in the law, and to the recommendations of a joint legislative subcommittee created in 1987 to study the problem of child abuse victims as witnesses in the courtroom. The subcommittee recommended the enactment of four bills in an effort to minimize the …

Technological Change And Child Behavior Among The !Kung, Patricia Draper, Elizabeth Cashdan Jan 1988

Technological Change And Child Behavior Among The !Kung, Patricia Draper, Elizabeth Cashdan

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

How does change in one part of a social system affect other parts? This is the central question that must be answered in order to understand the process through which culture changes. This paper is about a small piece of the problem. It investigates how changes in subsistence economy affect child behavior and the relations between parents and children among !Kung Bushmen of Western Botswana. We will show that the adoption of a sedentary life style and a new technology of food production is associated with changes in the social interactions between parents and children and between children and their …

Academic Departments: Breaking The Habit Of Isolation, Jon Whitmore Jan 1988

Academic Departments: Breaking The Habit Of Isolation, Jon Whitmore

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article critiques the tendency of academic departments to become isolated and protective of their disciplinary boundaries, limiting opportunities for intellectual growth and collaboration. While departments provide essential structure and identity within higher education, they can also foster parochialism, territorialism, and insularity. The discussion highlights theatre as an inherently interdisciplinary field that naturally connects with literature, music, anthropology, cultural studies, and technology, making it well-suited for cross-departmental partnerships. Examples include collaborations with engineering and architecture on computer-aided design, with visual artists and composers on performance art, and with modern languages and cultural studies scholars as dramaturgs. The article argues that …

Brief Amici Curiae Of Feminist Anti-Censorship Taskforce, Et Al., In American Booksellers Association V. Hudnut, Nan D. Hunter, Sylvia A. Law

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The document that follows represents both a legal brief and a political statement. It was written for two purposes: to mobilize, in a highly visible way, a broad spectrum of feminist opposition to the enactment of laws expanding state suppression of sexually explicit material; and to place before the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit a cogent legal argument for the constitutional invalidity of an Indianapolis municipal ordinance that would have permitted private civil suits to ban such material, purportedly to protect women. Drafting this brief was one of the most demanding and exhilarating assignments either author has yet …

Feminist Theory And Postwar American Drama, Gayle Austin Jan 1988

Feminist Theory And Postwar American Drama, Gayle Austin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is concerned with developing feminism as a critical tool, to be applied to drama. Feminist theory from anthropology, psychology, literary criticism, and film theory is summarized and one theorist from each field is selected to serve as an example of how feminism in that field can illuminate drama written by both women and men.

I begin by outlining the three chronological stages of feminist criticism: (1) Images of women; (2) Women writers; and (3) The questioning of an entire field. The various political divisions of feminism (liberal, radical, and socialist) also need to be kept in mind, and …
