Mr. Sammler's Planet: The Terms Of The Covenant, Michelle Loris Jan 1978

Mr. Sammler's Planet: The Terms Of The Covenant, Michelle Loris

English Faculty Publications

For Saul Bellow the essential quest is spiritual: it is a search for humanness in a world that daily assaults and denies such a search. This struggle to be human is the author's one story and the various versions of that same story simply indicate the individual progress each protagonist—Joseph, Asa, Wilhelm, Herzog, Sammler—makes on that journey. To find the genuinely human is the hero's task.

Personal Responsibility In A Professional System, Monroe H. Freedman Jan 1978

Personal Responsibility In A Professional System, Monroe H. Freedman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

It is a singularly good thing, I think, that law students, and even some lawyers and law professors, are questioning with increasing frequency and intensity whether "professionalism" is incompatible with human decency-asking, that is, whether one can be a good lawyer and a good person at the same time. I have a special interest in that question because Professor John T. Noonan, Jr. (a personal friend, perceptive critic, and a previous speaker in this annual series) has drawn the inference from my book that I do not believe that a decent, honest person can practice criminal law or teach others …

An Examination Of The Male Sex Role Model In Prime Time Television Commercials, Renee Meyers

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Theses, Student Research, and Creative Work

The purpose of this thesis is to examine male role models in prime time television commercials. The plan for the study is as follows: Chapter Two will review research on the importance of television to our society and its influence on the socialization process through which children and adults learn appropriate role behavior and attitudes. Then a review of the research which examines the characteristics of the female role model on television will illustrate the stereotypic female models television is now portraying. Chapter Three will discuss the methods and procedures necessary for examination of the male sex role model in …

The Heart And Mind Of Simone De Beauvoir, Maryann Janosik

Honors Papers

This thesis will examine Beauvoir's views on women, her unique brand of feminism. The following questions will be pursued: How did Beauvoir break out of the traditional female role as a young woman? What were Beauvoir's views on women in general? On various types of women? How do Beauvoir's novels reflect her attitudes toward the condition of women? And why? How did other aspects of her thought- her attraction to existentialism and Marxism, her rebellion against her bourgeois background, affect her response to feminist issues?

United States V. Bechtel Corporation: Antitrust And The Arab Blacklist, James H. Longstreet Jan 1978

United States V. Bechtel Corporation: Antitrust And The Arab Blacklist, James H. Longstreet

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

In January 1977, the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department and the Bechtel Corporation entered a proposed final settlement of the antitrust suit filed by the United States one year earlier. The complaint had charged that Bechtel, one of the world's largest construction firms, and four of its affiliates, had implemented the Arab League boycott of Israel and of "pro-Israeli" domestic firms. This settlement of the Antitrust Division's first attack on the thirty-year-old Arab boycott has resulted in a consent accord which outlines a permissible course of conduct for United States firms seeking trade with the Arab world, but leaves …

A Perceptual Study Of Emotion In Esophageal Speech, Charles Carlisle Ellis Jan 1978

A Perceptual Study Of Emotion In Esophageal Speech, Charles Carlisle Ellis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to investigate the perceivability of emotion in esophageal speech. Specifically, the questions under study were: (1) Are naive listeners able to accurately perceive emotional intention from auditory samples of esophageal speech? (2) Are the listeners' judgments of emotion from esophageal speech made with as much confidence as similar judgments made on normal laryngeal speech? A perceptual paradigm was utilized in which listeners made emotion judgments from speech samples of one laryngeal and one esophageal speaker. Two master audiotape recordings were constructed. Each contained a listening corpus of 75 randomly distributed grammatically complete, content-constant sentences. Each audiotape …

James Baldwin, Daryl Cumber Dance Jan 1978

James Baldwin, Daryl Cumber Dance

English Faculty Publications

James Baldwin is one of America's best known and most controversial writers. If there is some figurative truth in his declarations "Nobody Knows My Name" and "No Name in the Street," on a realistic level practically everyone knows his name, from people on the street to scholars in the most prestigious universities-and they all respond to him. Those responses are as diverse and as antithetical as the respondents. Indeed, there is little unanimity in the criticism of James Baldwin: some view him as a prophet preaching love and salvation, others as a soothsayer forecasting death and destruction; some see him …

Privacy Revisited: The Downfall Of Griswald, Martin R. Levy, C. Thomas Hectus Jan 1978

Privacy Revisited: The Downfall Of Griswald, Martin R. Levy, C. Thomas Hectus

University of Richmond Law Review

This article presents a review of the Supreme Court's privacy decisions since Griswold v. Connecticut, and concentrates on Doe v. Commonwealth's Attorney for City of Richmond as a vehicle to review the Burger Court's trends in the privacy area. Doe is a good vehicle because, though decided without opinion, the summary affirmance of a lower court decision denying homosexuals constitutional protection resolved the tension developing between Douglas' penumbra theory of privacy, which was the opinion of the Court in Griswold, and the more modern substantive due process analysis. The authors conclude that the opinions in Griswold are dead as far …

Some Impressions And Reflections On Observing Legal Proceedings In The People's Republic Of China, Christina B. Whitman, Sallyanne Payton Jan 1978

Some Impressions And Reflections On Observing Legal Proceedings In The People's Republic Of China, Christina B. Whitman, Sallyanne Payton

Articles

Very few foreign visitors have been allowed an opportunity to observe legal proceedings in the People's Republic of China. We were included in the first American group ever favored with a professional exchange legal tour. During the month of May 1977, we spent three weeks in China with a group of Black American judges and lawyers, headed by the Hon. George C. Crockett, Jr., Judge of the Recorder's Court of Detroit. Since we ourselves would be skeptical of the claim of a visitor to the United States who purported to have "studied" the American legal process during the course of …
