Though closely identified with the American West, Edgar Wilson Nye was born in the East and lived most of his life in the Midwest and South. Born in Shirley, Maine, on August 25, 1850, the eldest son of Franklin and Elizabeth Mitchell (Loring) Nye, Edgar was to remain a New Englander for only two years. As his future friend and lecture partner James Whitcomb Riley would later write in a comic account of Nye’s life, “At two years of age he took his parents by the hand, and, telling them that Piscataquis County was no place for them, he boldly …
The Patentee's Gains From Royalty Differentiation Under Exclusive Territorial Licensing, William G. Snead
The Patentee's Gains From Royalty Differentiation Under Exclusive Territorial Licensing, William G. Snead
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Royalty differentiation under exclusive territorial grants is a device which a patent owner, given proper conditions, can use to maximize his profits from licensing the patent rights to an invention. The patentee creates exclusive territories by granting only one license per territory, and then sets different royalties for each territory in accordance with the differing price elasticities of demand for the patented end product. Commentators have taken various stands on how the interests of the patentee and the public should be balanced in determining the desirability of permitting such exclusive territorial grants. One analysis purports to show that permitting a …

Testing In The Arts: Aesthetic Perception Is A Part Of Human Intelligence, Warren Sylvester Smith
Testing In The Arts: Aesthetic Perception Is A Part Of Human Intelligence, Warren Sylvester Smith
Perspectives (1969-1979)
Simply stated like this , who would argue about it? The recognition of forms and patterns - visual or aural - the sensitive distinction among colors, the interpretation of movement or gesture - all of these are patently human accomplishments , and mastery of them is generally recognized as evidence of a kind of superiority. The statement would seem more commonplace than revolutionary.
But, as with many a principle honored in the abstract, putting it into educational practice would be revolutionary. Although the notion of measuring intelligence is no longer fashionable, our aptitude and achievement tests do imply two major …
What Are We Going To Do About The Current Threat To The Idea Of A University?, Joseph R. Royce
What Are We Going To Do About The Current Threat To The Idea Of A University?, Joseph R. Royce
Perspectives (1969-1979)
The university never has been a "strong" social institution, but it has seen better days as a bastion of learning. Since it is one of the few havens for the creative minority, it is obvious that continued neglect of this institution will be detrimental to the development of "high" culture. The point is that it is the creative minority - artists, philosophers, scientists - who provide the new awarenesses, values, and sensitivities which are necessary for the dynamics of a complex, modern culture.
