Freedom Of Expression And The Mentally Disordered: Philosophical And Constitutional Perspectives, Lawrence O. Gostin
Freedom Of Expression And The Mentally Disordered: Philosophical And Constitutional Perspectives, Lawrence O. Gostin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Mental illness is usually described as an impaired ability to communicate effectively. Yet the societal response--both historically and under modem psychiatric practice--has been to retard, rather than encourage, the acquisition of linguistic skills. This impediment to normal social intercourse leaves individual interests in free expression ineffectuated; it concerns the legal profession because the government condones and enforces the restriction of first amendment rights in a potentially large segment of the population. This article examines the philosophical justification for free communication for the mentally handicapped. It further suggests a systematic application of the first amendment to the particular problems of the …

Admissions And Discipline Of Attorneys In Federal District Courts: A Study And Proposed Rules, Burton C. Agata
Hofstra Law Review
This report is conceived with the need (or lack thereof) for more uniform admission requirements and disciplinary processes in the federal courts. Basically, it surveys the background and literature and considers the issues and proposals relating to bar admissions and discipline in the federal courts. It also contains a Study Draft of Rules Governing Admissions and Discipline in Federal District Courts (Appendix A). The Study Draft proposals are designed to assure that there are rules explicitly governing the material issues considered in the report. At the same time, the Study Draft would leave to the local courts sufficient flexibility to …

A History Of Latter-Day Saint Screen Portrayals In The Anti-Mormon Film Era, 1905-1936, Richard Alan Nelson
A History Of Latter-Day Saint Screen Portrayals In The Anti-Mormon Film Era, 1905-1936, Richard Alan Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
Polygamy was the key issue which acted to popularize opposition to the Latter-day Saint Church during the years 1905-1936. As a result of the continuing controversy over the so-called "Mormon Question," secular moviemakers in this period planned or actually produced nearly forty motion pictures containing Mormon characterizations. Although several important pro-LDS movies were made (some with Church assistance), the anti-Mormon photoplay dominated the silent film era portrait of the Saints. Murder and polygamy as basic themes provide clear reference to traditional literary and theatrical images.
Early attempts by Utah and Church officials to censor the offending pictures were unsuccessful. Following …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to develop a course outline to begin the teaching of the American Sign Language at the Language Training Mission in Provo, Utah. Presently there is no program offered to train missionaries to teach the eight discussions to the hearing impaired who use sign language and fingerspelling to communicate. This study attempts to provide such a course outline that can later be developed into a complete training program.
To establish a criterion for this course, existing theories and curriculum guides for teaching sign language were reviewed and summarized. A survey for training interpreters, particularly in …
