“Sometimes I Feel That Going To College Was A Waste Of Time”: Latinas’ Lived Experiences Navigating Culture, Gender, And Marriage Post-College Degree, Nancy Peña May 2026

“Sometimes I Feel That Going To College Was A Waste Of Time”: Latinas’ Lived Experiences Navigating Culture, Gender, And Marriage Post-College Degree, Nancy Peña

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative critical narrative study explores how Latinas navigate and make meaning of gender roles within their heterosexual marriages post-college graduation. Data are collected via semi-structured interviews with 10 Latina participants: an initial plática focus group, followed by individual interviews, and a final plática focus group for member checking. Key findings reveal that despite Latinas acquiring autonomy, stability, negotiated power, personal growth, and social development as a result of attaining a degree in higher education, overall development is limited due to heightened responsibilities, persistent gender hierarchies, continuous religious norms, and constant gender role guilt. The evidence suggests that although attaining …

Effects Of Vitamin E Deficiency On Anxiety-Like Behavior In Zebrafish With Distinct Stress Coping Styles, Areem Zahid

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Stress and anxiety disorders affect millions worldwide and represent a significant public health burden. Individual differences in stress coping style and antioxidant regulation contribute to variability in stress responsiveness and anxiety-related behaviors. Oxidative imbalance has been implicated in the neurobiology of anxiety, but its interaction with inherent stress coping phenotypes remains unclear. This study examined whether long-term dietary vitamin E deficiency alters anxiety-like behaviors in zebrafish selectively bred for proactive and reactive stress coping styles. Adult zebrafish were maintained on either a vitamin E–sufficient or vitamin E–deficient diet for five months, followed by behavioral assessment using the novel tank diving …

Immigrants: Neighbors Or Strangers? An Analysis On Christian Thought And Immigration, Mariah G. Rivera

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

This thesis examines the relationship between Christian thought and perspectives on immigration in the United States, particularly in the context of the current Trump administration, which is focusing heavily on restrictive immigration policies. It explores the historical relationship between religion and government through government commissions, as well as changes in key immigration policies such as the “sensitive locations” guidelines affecting enforcement at and near places of worship. Drawing on biblical scripture, the thesis identifies key themes of loving the stranger, assisting the vulnerable, and obeying governing authorities, all of which inform Christian interpretations of immigration.

Through analysis of national and …

Advances In Computational Methods For Sparsity-Promoting Linear Inverse Problems, Jonathan Lindbloom May 2026

Advances In Computational Methods For Sparsity-Promoting Linear Inverse Problems, Jonathan Lindbloom

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Inverse problems arise throughout science and engineering, where indirect, incomplete, and noisy observations are used to recover unknown parameters of interest. In these applications, the corresponding forward or measurement models are often ill-conditioned or underdetermined, so direct inversion is unstable and regularization is required. This thesis develops computational methods for linear inverse problems in which the unknown is assumed to be approximately sparse in a transformed domain defined by a linear, possibly rank-deficient operator, such as a finite-difference matrix, with particular emphasis on large-scale problems.

The thesis makes three main contributions. First, it generalizes hierarchical Bayesian maximum a posteriori estimation …

Analytically Evaluating The Efficacy Of Work-Based Learning And Classroom Based Learning In Workforce Development Programs, Melissa Anne Sadler-Nitu May 2026

Analytically Evaluating The Efficacy Of Work-Based Learning And Classroom Based Learning In Workforce Development Programs, Melissa Anne Sadler-Nitu

Theses and Dissertations

Workforce development systems in the United States provide occupational training to improve employment outcomes for individuals facing barriers to employment. Training is commonly delivered through classroom-based training (CBT) offered by educational institutions or through work-based learning (WBL) delivered in partnership with employers. Although both approaches are widely used within workforce development programs, limited empirical research has examined whether occupational training prior to employment improves employment retention or whether WBL produces stronger employment outcomes than CBT.

The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative ex post facto study was to examine the relationship between occupational training and short-term employment outcomes among workforce participants …

Insights Into Androgen Receptor Allosteric Modulation By P,P'-Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene Binding At The Binding Function-3 Site And Site-Specific Binding Function-3 Mutations, Emanuel Aggeo Flores May 2026

Insights Into Androgen Receptor Allosteric Modulation By P,P'-Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene Binding At The Binding Function-3 Site And Site-Specific Binding Function-3 Mutations, Emanuel Aggeo Flores

Theses and Dissertations

One of DDT’s metabolites, p,p’-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), has been classified as an endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) due to its ability to interfere with hormone signaling by binding to nuclear receptors (NR) such as the androgen receptor (AR).

Structurally, the AR contains a ligand-binding domain (LBD) where endogenous steroids bind. Furthermore, the LBD contains a surface binding site known as binding function-3 (BF-3), which studies suggest exerts an allosteric effect on bound DHT when small, hydrophobic molecules bind.

Here, we present a study that examines how specific BF-3 site mutations and DDE binding affect steroid stability within the LBP utilizing computational methods. …

Mineral King Cabin Roof Rennovation, Leilani G. Lau May 2026

Mineral King Cabin Roof Rennovation, Leilani G. Lau

Architectural Engineering

This project explored performance-based design by analyzing and redesigning the roof for a cabin built in the 1950s and located in Mineral King Valley in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California. The Sierra Nevada Mountains experience heavy amounts of snow during the winter season. In the winter, the cabin is unoccupied, so the performance objective was collapse prevention, rather than life safety. Since the performance objective focused on collapse prevention at a time when the building was unoccupied, the probability of failure did not need to be low, so safety factors were omitted. This approach required deeper understanding of the code …

Exploring The Role Of Video Games In Civil Engineering Education And K-12 Stem Engagement, Jillian S. Codron May 2026

Exploring The Role Of Video Games In Civil Engineering Education And K-12 Stem Engagement, Jillian S. Codron

Architectural Engineering

Civil engineering education has traditionally emphasized a linear progression from theory to application, with foundational concepts introduced in lecture before being reinforced through laboratory or design experiences. While effective for advanced learners, this approach can limit early engagement for K–12 students who may struggle to connect abstract principles to realworld engineering practice. This project examines the use of video games as interactive, feedback-driven environments for introducing civil engineering concepts and practices to younger learners in more exploratory and accessible ways.

The study pursues four primary objectives: evaluating the educational affordances of selected video games; examining how gaming experiences have influenced …

Authoritarian Bidding: Domestic Institutions And The Domestic Politics Of Mega-Sporting Event Campaigns, Zanela Denise Sygaco Bajarias May 2026

Authoritarian Bidding: Domestic Institutions And The Domestic Politics Of Mega-Sporting Event Campaigns, Zanela Denise Sygaco Bajarias

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines why some authoritarian regimes bid for mega sporting events while others do not. While existing research focuses primarily on the impacts of hosting, this paper shifts attention to the political logic of bidding itself. It argues that bidding is not merely a preparatory step but a strategic political act. Drawing on selectorate theory, audience cost theory, and research on authoritarian institutions, the study proposes that variation in bidding behavior is driven by differences in institutionalization. Authoritarian regimes with nominally democratic institutions, such as legislatures, parties, and controlled media, face broader domestic audiences and stronger incentives to demonstrate …

Do I Have To Know Someone? The Impact Of Factors Beyond The Playing Field That Affect Mlb Hall Of Fame Voting., Jackson Wollscheid

Economics Undergraduate Honors Theses

With the creation of WAR (Wins above Replacement), it has created an index to measure the player’s value using a variety of statistics relevant to that player’s position. The higher a player’s career WAR then the greater the impact that player had on the game during his career. However, players are not simply inducted into the Hall of Fame on this measure of value but on voting from members of the BBWAA (Baseball Writers’ Association of America). This research investigates external factors outside of standard playing statistics’ influence on Hall of Fame voting, including team affiliation, career length, and other …

Manipulation Or Monetization?: The Rise Of Stock Buybacks And Their Effects On Firm Valuation And Investment, Thomas H. Serrano

Economics Undergraduate Honors Theses

Abstract:

This thesis uses basic econometrics to examine the relationship between stock buybacks, firm valuation, and investment among publicly traded firms from 2000-2024. Using firm-level data pulled from Compustat North America and a fixed-effect multivariate regression, it evaluates whether buybacks are associated with higher valuation and stronger productive investment as defined in the paper. The results show that buybacks are positively associated with firm valuation the first year that they occur, but the relationship disappears when they are lagged for a year. Furthermore, the analysis does not find strong statistical evidence that repurchases are associated with changes in investment, or …

F.L.A.I.R. -- A Flow-Level Autoencoder For Intrusion Recognition, Joseph P. Dumond May 2026

F.L.A.I.R. -- A Flow-Level Autoencoder For Intrusion Recognition, Joseph P. Dumond

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks underpin critical infrastructure worldwide, yet securing them remains an open challenge. Traditional intrusion detection systems require labeled attack data for training, a resource that is rarely available in real industrial deployments. They also fail against novel threats, a model trained on known attacks has no basis for detecting anything outside its training set. This thesis presents a Flow-Level Autoencoder for Intrusion Recognition, or FLAIR, a fully unsupervised deep learning system for network intrusion detection in IIoT environments. FLAIR is built on a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) autoencoder trained exclusively on normal network traffic. Rather …

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

As current electrical grids trend toward a heavier reliance on DERs, there is a growing need to secure DER communications while maintaining data sovereignty for device owners. Previously, work by Donna Thakadipuram established the foundation for a decentralized framework using Solid by implementing a prototype that used a Raspberry Pi and a DSP to simulate Modbus traffic and upload the data to a Solid server. This thesis extends her work to simulate multiple DERs using Typhoon HIL and communicate to each device over DNP3/TCP. The system uses a Python-based DNP3 master to collect telemetry from all 12 DERs before transforming …

From Mobilenet To Repvit: A Survey Of Edge-Optimized Computer Vision Architectures, Eli A. Bosch May 2026

From Mobilenet To Repvit: A Survey Of Edge-Optimized Computer Vision Architectures, Eli A. Bosch

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Edge-optimized computer vision is a constantly evolving field where the definition of efficiency has changed repeatedly. This thesis presents a literature survey of four recent Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) families, all analyzed through a consistent framework of accuracy, parameter count, and Multiply-Accumulate Operations (MACs), alongside a survey of five CNN and Vision Transformer (ViT) hybrid models to examine the direction of the field. It was found that accuracy follows a logarithmic curve with respect to parameter count, exhibiting diminishing returns as models scale. This suggests that architectural design contributes more to performance gains than parameter count alone. Theoretical efficiency metrics …

Performance Comparison Of A Two-Level And A Three-Level 1500v Three-Phase Grid-Tied Solar Inverter, Shawn Sproles May 2026

Performance Comparison Of A Two-Level And A Three-Level 1500v Three-Phase Grid-Tied Solar Inverter, Shawn Sproles

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

With the global switch to renewable energy sources, photovoltaic energy has become an integral source to harvest from. When solar panels convert sunlight into a DC voltage, a grid-tied inverter is needed to transform this DC voltage into an AC voltage to interface with the AC grid. The most widely used topologies for grid-tied solar inverters are two-level three-phase inverters and three-level NPC three-phase inverters. Compared to two-level inverters, three-level NPC inverters have advantages such as lower EMI, lower THD, and lower switching losses. Moreover, three-level NPC inverters are shown to have higher efficiency in low-voltage applications at medium to …

To support this effort, the group is writing a literature review on the topics of AI and critical systems security. Literature review is an …

Protocol-Aware Enforcement-Point Postcards And Collector Feedback For Ot/Ics Forensic Readiness And Closed-Loop Defense, Haden Fowler May 2026

Protocol-Aware Enforcement-Point Postcards And Collector Feedback For Ot/Ics Forensic Readiness And Closed-Loop Defense, Haden Fowler

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

In this work, we apply P4-programmable switches to Operational Technology (OT) and Industrial Control System (ICS) traffic with the objective of turning enforcement decisions into structured forensic evidence that can also support fast, scoped feedback. OT investigations often rely on later correlation of endpoint logs, passive packet traces, and historian data, but those sources can be incomplete, hard to align in time, and missing the decision made at the enforcement point. We address this gap by implementing a P4-based enforcement switch that parses Modbus/TCP write traffic, applies protocol-aware policy checks, and exports protocolaware postcards to a collector. The collector stores …

Unpacking American Reception Of Glocalized Non-English Content In The Netflix Era, Sur Govindarajan

Dissertations

The swift growth of streaming services has revolutionized the worldwide distribution of media, making it possible for non-English and non-English-adjacent content to reach American consumers on a never-before-seen scale, which is sometimes perceived as an indication of increasing cultural tolerance. However, while a lot is known about what audiences see, far less is known about how they really understand and assess these stories. There is a fundamental vacuum in our understanding of audience reception as a lived, meaning-making process because previous research has mostly focused on consumption patterns. In order to close that gap, this study examines how American audiences …
