The Regular Army As A Factor In Maintaining Peace In The United States., A. Robert Ginsburgh (Abraham Robert) 1895-1958 May 1922

The Regular Army As A Factor In Maintaining Peace In The United States., A. Robert Ginsburgh (Abraham Robert) 1895-1958

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The function of the army of the United States is to protect the country against all enemies foreign and domestic. Everyone is cognizant of the accomplishments of the American forces against its foreign enemies; but there is another work, of equal importance, fraught with as great a danger, which is too often overlooked that is, the use of the army as an auxiliary force to strengthen the arm of municipal authority, in the suppression of riots and disturbances; and to maintain order, where for some reason or other, the municipal authority has been unable to cope with the situation. Wars …

Woman's Place In Modern Drama., Ruth Wilson May 1922

Woman's Place In Modern Drama., Ruth Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While the character of women in the plays of ancient times has ever played an important part in the history of the drama, the appearance of women in the feminine roles is a distinctly recent development. It might well be said that this is a fairly modern addition to the stage. Perhaps if Aeschylus or Shakespeare were here to-day, they would shake their heads and sigh because women, whose place they considered to be in the home, should have so far degraded themselves as to appear before an audience on an equal footing with their husbands or brothers. They would …

The Beginnings Of English Dramatic Literature, Clarence Francis Dickopf May 1922

The Beginnings Of English Dramatic Literature, Clarence Francis Dickopf

Bachelors’ Theses

No art has been practiced by human beings from the beginning. We only find a gradual development. We have men, however, who were born with a gift of genius, who were unconscious of the laws and rules governing their respective spheres. We read of a Mozart, a Michaelangelo and a host of other gifted men whose art came to them intuitively. These are exceptions. Art has laboriously grown, and so it is with our own dramatic art, we see its gradual development. In order to study English drama intelligently we must know its origins or beginnings, how it arose from …

The Human Soul Is Simple, Spiritual, Immortal, Robert S. Mccarthy May 1922

The Human Soul Is Simple, Spiritual, Immortal, Robert S. Mccarthy

Bachelors’ Theses

Much of our thinking today is regulated by propaganda. Propaganda is not confined to patriotic bureaus of any one nation, or to the espionage department of the army and navy of any one government; neither is propaganda limited to national affairs, nor to the field of politics. Propaganda of a certain type has found its way even into the sacred sanctum of philosophy. Think of how many philosophical theories we have today, which in final analysis are intended to serve the purpose of a well-directed campaign of proselytising "right thinking". Theories arising from predjudiced minds are spread broadcast, whose mission …

Divorce Is A Great Menace, And Should Be Thoroughly Eradicated, Frederick A. Kurt May 1922

Divorce Is A Great Menace, And Should Be Thoroughly Eradicated, Frederick A. Kurt

Bachelors’ Theses

"What God hath joined together, let no man put asunder". Matt. XIX, 6 "What's done can not be undone." Macbeth.

Marriage is generally accepted to be a contract by which two persons, man and woman, bind themselves to live together, in an indissoluble union until death. With this definition we iterate the properties of marriage, unity, and indissolubility. Such were the properties of marriage at the time of Adam and Eve, and such must be its nature today. As long as husband and wife live in such a union the properties of marriage are not transgressed against. The history of …

The Essence Of The Drama, William M. Lamers May 1922

The Essence Of The Drama, William M. Lamers

Bachelors’ Theses

"Drama is a representation of the will of man in conflict with the mysterious powers or natural forces which limit and belittle us; it is on e of us thrown living upon the stage, there to struggle against fatality; against social law; against one of his fellow mortals; against himself...; against the ambitions, the interests, the prejudices, the folly, the malevolence of those around him." - Brunetiere, The Law of the Drama.

The Philosophy Of Composition, Frederick Paul Arnold May 1922

The Philosophy Of Composition, Frederick Paul Arnold

Bachelors’ Theses

D.ring the slow and regular development of the human race from infancy to adolescence and from adolescence to old age, the one question confronting it is the "quiddity" of its environment. One of the most prominent of man's characteristics is to seek knowledge; to learn something new; to know what was hitherto unknown and through this knowledge to gain further enlightenment upon things about him. He has studied the planets and the elements; he has made note of the physical and chemical laws but has me:rely attempted to gain an adequate knowledge of himself.

The Effect Of Condensed, Dry, And Fresh Milk In The Diet Of Albino Rats., John T. Walsh May 1922

The Effect Of Condensed, Dry, And Fresh Milk In The Diet Of Albino Rats., John T. Walsh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although much work has been done in determining the nutritional values of different milks, all of it has been carried on at different times by various men, and there is no published data demonstrating the relative values derived from experiments which were carried on simultaneously and in which all subjects were under the same conditions. It is well known that rats show the effect of conditions to which they are subjected very easily and respond to them in the same manner in which man does. They are therefore a fit subject for nutritional experimentation. The Albino rat lives three years …

A Study In Professional Ethics., Lewis William Dockery May 1922

A Study In Professional Ethics., Lewis William Dockery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Professional ethics does not differ in its essential nature from general ethics; both are concerned with problems of human conduct. The difference between the two is a difference of scope but not of nature. The scope of general ethics is as broad as the purposive acts of rational persons, while the scope of professional ethics is limited to the purposive acts of lawyers, physicians, teachers, clergymen, and other professional persons. The former includes all normal persons irrespective of their vocations; the latter includes only persons who are in professional life. Professional ethics takes the field of general ethics for granted; …

Joseph Neef : Pestalozzian Pioneer In America., Ruth Lee Koch May 1922

Joseph Neef : Pestalozzian Pioneer In America., Ruth Lee Koch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the early nineteenth century the Pestalossian system of education became very popular in Europe, and, aided by the necessity of something positive to take the place of the decayed and formalistic systems then prevalent, the movement spread rapidly. With its spread to America an old Napoleonic soldier, Joseph Neef, was eminently associated; but because this land was not yet ready for the seed he had to sow, his influence was little felt, and he himself was forgotten. At present only a few of the professional educators of the country even know his name. A distinction which attaches to his …

The Effect Of Heat On The Resistance Of Varnish., Leonard C. Brecher 1900- May 1922

The Effect Of Heat On The Resistance Of Varnish., Leonard C. Brecher 1900-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Varnish and its use has been known since ancient times. Altho the knowledge of varnish has been attributed to the Japanese as early as 500-600 B.C., Tschirsch and A.D. Stevens say that the Japs did not possess this art originally, but that they probably acquired it from the continent during the third century. Nevertheless, varnish did not come into general use until the middle ages. In the 12th century, a monk by the name of Theophilus published the first directions for making an oil varnish, but it was not until 1790 in England, and between 1820 and 1830 in France …

A History Of Ohio River Trade At Louisville From Its Beginning Until 1840., John Edward Heller May 1922

A History Of Ohio River Trade At Louisville From Its Beginning Until 1840., John Edward Heller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dominant theme in the study of any phase of Ohio River history is found in the great extent of the river system and the vast area of the drainage basin of the Mississippi to which this stream forms so important a part. The basin of the Mississippi, as has been aptly said, is the "Body of the Nation," all other parts of the nation being but members, important in themselves, yet more important in their relation to this.(1) In extent it is the second great valley of the world, being exceeded only by that of the Amazon.(2) In a …

Linseed Oil And Its Oxidation Products., Mary Louise Towles May 1922

Linseed Oil And Its Oxidation Products., Mary Louise Towles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Linseed oil is the oil from the plant linum usitatissiumum. It is not a new oil, for we read that the Greeks and Romans used it, not as it is used today, but as a food, and it is still used for that purpose in some countries, especially in Russia, Poland, and Hungary. The oil was first introduced into the United States during the nineteenth century, and in 1810 there were two hundred eighty three linseed oil mills in only fourteen states. In those days the process of obtaining the oil from the seed was tedious, and the yield was …

The Water Supply Of The City Of Milwaukee With Experimental Data, William K. Stumpf Apr 1922

The Water Supply Of The City Of Milwaukee With Experimental Data, William K. Stumpf

Bachelors’ Theses

All mankind, whether the wandering savage, the isolated pioneer, or the dweller in the congested city, requires a constant supply of water for his needs. This fact is attested to in all the civilizations of the past, and if we go back to biblical times, or to the days of ancient Greece and Rome, we read of the famous wells and aqueducts, from which the inhabitants derived their supplies.

Mahone, The Boss, Celia Levinson Apr 1922

Mahone, The Boss, Celia Levinson

Honors Theses

It is no accident or chance smile of fortune when a man works doggedly and whole-heartedly with all the force of a dynamic spirit and sheer indomitable will toward one end, that he may wield the sceptre of power and bend the wills of other men to his. Whether or not the results of such control of power will amount to greatness depends upon the uses to which the weapon is put and upon the soul of the man. Power can be acquried, but true greatness never. True greatness emanates from within the spirit and cannot be spread over the …

Concerning The Degree Of Self Fertilization In Corn (Zea Mays Indentata) That Is Obtained Under Normal Field Conditions, George Janssen Jan 1922

Concerning The Degree Of Self Fertilization In Corn (Zea Mays Indentata) That Is Obtained Under Normal Field Conditions, George Janssen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"Like begets like”. This well-known phrase which aroused so much comment among students in genetics and animal breeding has almost unconsciously become an adage to a part of their philosophy. Whatever truth or lack of it is associated with these words we admire the keenness of observation of him who wrote them. However significant the words "like begets like" could it be strictly adhered to our problem in breeding a cross-fertilized population would be greatly lessened. Much has been done in plant and animal breeding and the methods employed in accomplishing the greater part is without written history. Here and …

Among the various plants that have been placed under cultivation in the Medicinal and Poisonous Plant Investigations Gardens of the South Dakota state College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts School of Pharmacy, has been that of Nicandra Physalodes (L) Pers., commonly known as the Apple of Peru. This plant has been under cultivation in the gardens since 1918, the seed having been received from Professor E. L. Newcomb, Director of the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy Drug Gardens, in the Fall of 1917. Professor Newcomb reports that the seed had been purchased from Haage and Schmidt, Erfurt, Germany, in …

The Effect Of Diet Of The Cow And The Pasteurization Of Milk In Closed Bottles Upon The Nutritive And Antiscorbutic Properties Of Cows' Milk, George C. Biggar Jan 1922

The Effect Of Diet Of The Cow And The Pasteurization Of Milk In Closed Bottles Upon The Nutritive And Antiscorbutic Properties Of Cows' Milk, George C. Biggar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Probably no discovery in the scientific world, and especially in the field of nutrition, has excited more interest in the past few years than the finding and naming of the three hitherto unknown food factors known as vitamins. For many years it has been observed that certain diets for man that apparently are satisfactory as far as their nutritive value is concerned, still seem to lack something necessary for normal growth and function, or else lead to some serious disease. For example it has been known for centuries that sailors on long ocean voyages where the diet consisted largely of …

The Trend Of Foreign Trade With Argentina, Wallace Sawyer Jan 1922

The Trend Of Foreign Trade With Argentina, Wallace Sawyer

The Flood Control System Of Newport, Ark., Alvis Frederick Denison Jan 1922

The Flood Control System Of Newport, Ark., Alvis Frederick Denison

Bachelors Theses

"Vast sums each year are expended on flood control projects on the Mississippi river and its tributaries. Millions of acres that were formerly subject to annual inundation caused by overflows, have been reclaimed for agricultural purposes, and each year, an increasing amount of this sort of work must be done as quicker run off and an increased volume caused by the clearing of land and drainage of natural storage, results in higher flood stages. Of course the greatest work of this kind has been done along the Mississippi river, where great levees on each side from Missouri to its mouth …

The Equilibrium Of The Reaction Zn + Co₂ = Zno + Co, Clarence Ware Burkhart Jan 1922

The Equilibrium Of The Reaction Zn + Co₂ = Zno + Co, Clarence Ware Burkhart

Masters Theses

"Many attempts have been made in the last twenty years to smelt zinc ores in the electric furnace. The disadvantages of the present retort process have been discussed so often that they need not be dwelt upon here. The principle ones are, the low thermal efficiency of the retort furnace, low metal recoveries, small smelting units necessary, short life of the retorts and the difficulty of treating impure and low grade ores. Electric smelting offers remedies for most of these difficulties"--Introduction, page 1.

Determination Of The Solubilities Of Lithium, Sodium, And Potassium Sulphates In Absolute Methyl And Ethyl Alcohols, Jennie Lynn Lenox Jan 1922

Determination Of The Solubilities Of Lithium, Sodium, And Potassium Sulphates In Absolute Methyl And Ethyl Alcohols, Jennie Lynn Lenox

Masters Theses

"It was thought by the author that there might be some relation between the solubility of a salt in the alcohols and the position of those alcohols in the series of monohydric alcohols; that is, that there should be a definite increase or decrease in the solubility of any particular salt in going from a higher to a lower alcohol. The object of this paper was to find the solubilities of some simple salts in as pure alcohol as could be prepared, and to find any relationships if possible"--page 2.

The Action Of Tan Bark In The Manufacture Of White Lead By The Old Dutch Process, Elmer List Jan 1922

The Action Of Tan Bark In The Manufacture Of White Lead By The Old Dutch Process, Elmer List

Masters Theses

"This investigation was undertaken because there is very little definite information in print, regarding the micro-organisms which play such an important part in the Old Dutch Process for manufacturing white lead. The statements concerning this process are very general in character. For instance, one book states, "The first action which goes on is to convert blue lead into basic acetate of lead. This is brought about by the heat of the fermenting tan, causing the evolution of acetic acid from the liquid of the pots." Albert H. Hooker in a little treatise on white lead says: "As it stands now, …
